Instant Favorite: Prom Queen - Lil' Wayne.

First of all, im a die hard Metalhead.

I heard of Lil' Wayne like a year or two ago.. Sounded like another mentally challenged rapper spitting random words around in a "cool" manner while flashing his underwear and making teenage girls cream their panties while male music fans call him an idiot on the internet.
talking about having his lollipop licked and shit,  i just put him in the "uninteresting musician" slot and never looked back. ( since i tend to dislike that shit, rather than actively HATE it)

So yesterday, for some reason i looked him up on Wikipedia, and i read that he made a rock album  "Rebirth" back in March .. so i listened to the album's singles, and i immediately FELL INLOVE with this fucked up tune called "Prom Queen"

Not only is the dark rap sound dipped in good old hard rock riffs (and very enthusiastic and dominant drums) with a touch of auto-tune really extraordinary and captivating and addicting,  but the lyrics are very accessable and moving (something i personally KINDA can relate to).
And to top it all the song's music video is brilliantly directed and goes too well with the words.

ive watched this music video like twelve times now.. ive never done that before.

Edit: before you listen to this you need to fricking relax and  take a rest from all the over-analyzing and shit.. enjoy this brief piece of music for fucks sake and stop overthinking MUSIC, its not literature :)
P.S. even if you dont like the song, the video is worth it.. good story going on.

I'm gonna spend the next few days exploring Lil' Wayne. gonna be repulsed and irritated by his earlier work im sure (that so called 'rap'), but this mindfucking raprock album gave him another chance in my book.

For robotic tools who activate "rip on shitty music blog'  too quickly:  I pretty much dislike Lil Wayne too. not a Weezy fan speaking here..

No, no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no.

Dude, no. No. NOOO. No.

No.

I'm a Lil' Wayne fan (unlike most of the people on this forum). I think that his Rebirth album is basically garbage, as he plays against his strength (being a rapper) and tries to be a rock star/singer. It not only doesn't work, but he fails miserably at it. "Prom Queen" is probably the biggest offender out of all of them.

Ok, there are two good songs on that album. One's basically a normal rap/hip-hop song with Eminem called "Drop the World". Not expecting you to like that one. The other's a interpolation of the song "She's On Fire" from the Scarface soundtrack. He adds his vocals and distorted guitar and it somehow works because of how raunchy everything is. But everything else is terrible.

You seriously can't judge Lil' Wayne on this album. That's like saying you judge Steven Spielberg solely on the quality of The Terminal.

Is this supposed to be rap?

I thought your taste was bad when you said Avenged Sevenfold was good...but Lil' Wayne? Come on, man.

@VinceNotVance:
firstly, you need to relax, guy

Secondly, i enjoyed the 2 other songs you named, especially Drop The World.. really powerful and satisfying :)
and last of all, im not judging him based on Rebirth because i know thats not who Lil Wayne is.. and not being on himself on that album is the brilliance IMO.

dont mean to be mean but will the world ever get rid of that mentality you have, which makes you judge people's tastes based on a song or two ?

Deep down in my heart its Opeth for me (in addition to another 10-20 remarkable Metal/Rock acts), but turning into a one-genre lover is closed minded IMO.. so what if i sing Pa-pa-pa-poker Face along with Gaga or enjoy a Lil Wayne tune? and whats wrong with Avenged Sevenfold exactly ?

you need to open your mind braww! :P  you cant think of someone's taste as bad if they like a certain song or album, because that shit doesnt reflect one's taste.
It's like you love your religion and worship your god with all you have, yet you dont mind enjoying other religion's wisdom and goodness once in a while..

I can understand him fine. And his voice is auto-tuned, welcome to the world of modern popular-music.
The song's ok. Tolerable but nothing special, imo.

You can not be serious.... There is no way. I love both rap and rock if it's done by talented musicians/rappers, but this.... Lil' Wayne is shit no matter what genre he's expressing himself in.

I think people need to CHILL THE FUCK OUT. We all have our musical tastes; if you don't like it then get the fuck out.

Posted by CL60

His attempt at rock is absolutely terrible.

YouTube changed again the graphics on its player? Damn.  I was about to say that this is not worse than most crap out there (although it's not better either), but then I heard the Auto Tune at the end... urgh. I'll stick to my playlist.

PS: Is that Jonathan Davis at the drums?

He's expressing his opinion. We're expressing ours. I don't see what the problem is. Are you only allowed to respond to topics now if you agree with the OP?

If you're gonna express your opinion at least try not to be half-ass about it and leave one liners. There's a difference between opinion and thrashing on someone else's musical taste, or the artist.

thats the thing, that music isnt exactly 'my taste' and i think Lil Wayne is kinda full of shit, but at the end of the day its MUSIC and those shitty artists can create some interesting songs..
Kinda sad how everyone on the internet is so bloody serious and cant enjoy a simple song for what it is.. they focus on the wrong parts, and keep hating so passionately !
The problem here isnt that you disagree. i love that you disagree, its spices up the conversation and the exchange of opinions that we're having.. its just that people's responses are too aggressive and their minds are already made up.
Only a sith deals in absolutes..

allow me to disagree :) his attempt to rock while clearly on cough syrup made him create one unique little song

Okay, i'm not sure if you're talking specifically about me, but i don't see how i was in any way aggresive about my opinion. Like i said, i love both good rap and rock, but this song is just shit. I can't sugarcoat and say it's just not that good, because it's much, much worse than that. I adore music, it's one of my favorite things on this planet. But this...? No. No, sir, there is no way i can enjoy this. And i am clearly not alone in having that opinion.

Lil' Wayne was a great rapper until C3. It's a shame he fell off so bad.

I think all of us, including myself, have to chill out just a wee bit. Lil' Wayne apparently stirs up more controversy in this forums than that ItalyCanadian girl did.
I'm honestly not that surprised that a bunch of people don't like his music, but it's all good. Some people are fans, some people aren't, some people have differing views on whether a song is terrible or awesome or whatever. No big.

Just try to at least give your opinions and back them up instead of ruffling feathers here.

You know what? These two songs are a few reasons that lil' Wayne will always be terrible. I am usually very respectful when it comes to a person's choice in music but it's fucking lil' wayne.

well, personally, i still find it challenging to understand how anyone can enjoy Rap.. the attitude is just wrong, and it reflects mental disabilities..
I mean, lets take Lil' Wayne for example: After getting interested in him after listening to Prom Queen, i checked out some of his famous hits and i also watched a documentary about him. him and his homies in the video sounded like a bunch of mentally challenged cripples who dont know how to speak and say something meaningful, just talking random meaningless shit and giggling like assholes. Yes its true that we're discussing the music here, but music has attitude and personality especially when its made by one person rather than a band.
And when it comes to the music, its just.. dull and uninteresting.
You know that im not a hater and that i tolerate other people's tastes and everything, i have no problem with Lil Wayne, he can rap on and you can be his fan and it doesnt make me think any less of you, but the music to me is truly tasteless and shitty. I'd rather listen to a hard progressive metal track any day, for metal music discusses a variety of subjects and aspires to be as creative and diverse and deep as it could.

I'm not so much a fan of Lil' Wayne but judging from his past albums, he has at least some rap talent. When I heard he would  be trying to incorporate rock I thought "good for him" but then I heard the music. He uses autotune way too much because he can't sing normally and the guitar in his songs is really bad.

Is this a troll blog? Seriously, I'm can guarantee that you haven't listened to enough rap to actually make an informed statement on the genre. You talk a big game about respecting other genres of music yet then proceed to label rap as a genre plagued by "mental disabilities."

Judging an entire genre of music based on the rodeo clowns who populate the cover of Vibe magazine is simply foolish, and while you're entitled to maintain your opinion, it is still ignorant nonetheless. It's no different from someone who decides to try metal, listens to Linkin Park and Disturbed, and then decides that all metal is just a bunch of whiny, pompous troglodytes hammering away at their instruments in an attempt to craft any noise bearing even the faintest resemblance to music.

In summation you, sir, are either trolling or simply oblivious to your own benighted state of mind.

I know next to nothing about metal. I've never avoided it, I've been showed a few songs and enjoy some disliked others, but I grew up around classic rock and then moved into rap in my early teens. Sure I have some predisposition to believe that all metal is about Satan, but ( and I don't want you to gloss over this part because it directly relates to you) I DON'T PUBLICLY CONDEMN IT AS BEING FULL OF SATAN WORSHIPERS AND SUICIDAL DOUCHEBAGS. I am intelligent enough to realize that there must be quality metal about all facets of life.

You are not.

Since we're using unfounded stereotypes to judge people on the music they listen to, crawl back to the hot topic you came from.

@Jokers_Wild:   @Ctrlwud: @VinceNotVance:

Hmm, you do have a point. im no troll, so it's the latter (ignorance)
So you're saying that judging the genre based on the 5-10 'popular' artists i know isnt legit ? I'll play along. im interested in you showing me the goodies, give me some recommendations or embed some good rap songs
Sorry if i offended any rap fans, my opinion is based on what ive seen and heard, which i think can be enough in some genres (like pop.. you cant deny that), but if you're saying it isnt in rap, show me otherwise.
Do note that most of my criticism was about Lil Wayne himself and not the genre (i said most)
