I guess it's sunk cost. No need to torture myself over what are effectively phantasms.

Gaming Holding Pattern, Winter 2011

Some of gaming fandom takes a bit of effort. You try to support developers you like, you get in debates about the merits of certain game features, you try your best to play a game you may not like a whole lot right this moment in the hope that it'll get better. When I game as part of a community, I'll try stuff I'd otherwise not, and when I'm taking someone else's recommendation it sometimes takes some work to accept something outside of my comfort zone.

What do you play when you can't be arsed?

I find that trying a round of Spelunky is a fun way to waste some time, even though the only goals we have left in that game are goals we make ourselves. I also spent a long time playing Tales of Maj'Eyal, although when I realized that I would lose my saved games when I updated to a new version (and my life suddenly changed rather dramatically) I sort of left it behind (though another roguelike, the space exploration game Prospector, I recently tried out again). The Wager is fun, but still needs bugs worked out; Solium Infernum is great but takes a while (the demos of Armageddon Empires or Sixgun Saga are a lot more pick-up-and-play for me).  For an uninvolved but fun diversion, I'll play that pinball game Space Cadet (still one of my favorite video pinball games ever) or ROM Check Fail.

I'm willing to bet as I discover new games, or finally upgrade my machine, that I'll find a new retinue. Given that GOG's doing its usual holiday promotional deals odds are I may buy something from them. But right now, these games seem to be in repeat-gaming my comfort zone. You?

I usually go back to competitive multiplayer stuff when I'm tired of trying to play whatever old/new game that has come my way. Right now, that means Team Fortress 2 and League of Legends, both of which are excellent ways to waste some time when I'm too defeated to play Dark Souls. Also fighting games. A lot of fighting games.

@ArbitraryWater: That's interesting. I'd almost imagine any multiplayer element, unless it was with people I knew, to be more of a pain in the ass, not less. Maybe I try to seek out a controlled environment...

Lately I've found myself going back to The Binding of Isaac a lot when I can't be bothered with anything else. Team Fortress 2 also works wonderfully. Generally, anything without a story I could see working for me.

@Tordah: Interesting that you put it that way...  there are two kinds of stories in games, it seems. The kind we see (which can be a pain if we just want to play a game for pure mechanics), and the kind we make (which comes in games that have some mechanical juice to them). Maybe there's a blog in there somewhere if I find the time.

Golf, I always go back to golf. I saw Super Swing Golf Season 2 for pretty cheap at a local store today. Even though I played it the day it came out and traded it in after 80 hours, I almost bought it again.

Well, there's always my Tiger Woods series. But those anime golfers made me grin.

I don't really have one but plan to spend a lot of time playing some of the big games installed on my steam list and a little new one called SWOTOR

@Brians: I think it's pretty funny that they release near Christmas. I wonder if it's a demographic thing, where a lot people don't do a lot of Christmas stuff and just like to play games. Given some of my uncomfortable Christmases in the past I think I can understand! :)

@Hizang: You ever try Nuts and Bolts? I get the feeling I might want to track down a copy of that some day.

@Claude: One of my favorite games in High School happened to be a golf game in typing class. For some reason the idea that the game would wait for me to take a swing, and that there was a pleasant, manicured landscape around me made me forget I was supposed to be learning stuff.

@ahoodedfigure: It's the math for me I guess. The lie, wind and distance always intrigued me. I remember playing the PGA Tour back in the late 80's on a PC. It was three click, but it was golf. I loved every minute planning out my shots. Oh and I heard birds and stuff, so relaxing.

@Claude: Maybe it was PGA tour...  I also like that you're never guaranteed a perfect swing. You have to concentrate just as much when you start as when you've been playing for a while. It's sort of why sports games with stat improvements, unless you're a manager, don't quite make sense to me. Part of the surprises in sports come from a lucky or skillful amateur, or an unlucky or overconfident professional.

@ahoodedfigure: I played in the beta and felt like there was alot to like about the game. Granted there was some time where I felt underpowered for stuff but I will give it a try for at least a month. I wish I had been in the beta for DCUniverse because after a week I disliked that game but I like SWOTOR.

Resident Evil mercenaries is always something that I play to help get my mind off things whether its RE4, RE5 or the 3DS version. Its what i go back to when video games piss me off and make me want to give them up entirely, a few rounds of mercenaries mode always reminds me why i love gaming.

@Brians: It sometimes feels like it takes a lot of blaster hits to bring someone down, at least from what I've seen in the vids. I know why that is from a gameplay perspective, but it feels a bit weird if you think of Star Wars. Maybe old-tymie blasters cooked you slowly.

@DarthOrange: It always bothered me that there was a Resident Evil game for the Gamecube that I never got. Something about the cutesy startup music followed by gore would have been a funny contrast.

I don't have a 360 any more, but i did have and played through it. Really good game, loved it especially the art style and music.

Best Xbox 360 exclusive game.

@Brians: That's good to hear, because if I were to play any class in that game, it would likely be one with some pew-pew on. Trooper tops my list, with Smuggler a close second. Force users would be down in a pit, staring up.
