I don't think most of them take too much credit themselves, but rather it's the press, the companies and the people who buy the games that use them to promote, which tends to leave them with most, if not all of the credit for the games themselves.
"This is a puzzle game in which players line up 4 or more same-colored pieces on a game board. Players drop colored vitamin capsules onto the board and guide them as they fall on tiny "virus" creatures."

You are right about weddings and baby showers, but the rest of the stuff you mentioned. You don't celebrated a movie by enjoying it when you see it. You don't celebrate Apple by buying their product. It's not a celebration. Find something else, something genuine to celebrate... actually, go ahead and celebrate a movie if you want to.
I didn't say there wasn't a connection, I just said that next year's date wasn't relevant. I don't really feel all that different from the day before or the day after, for the matter. It's a pointless celebration, it's already been celebrated, and far more times than is necessary.
Oh, here it comes... All the europeans who've bought Rock Band will now come descend on this topic and it will be the end of it.
People, you have to realize that when applying pricing from outside U.S., you can't just use a valuta converter. The currency in the U.K. is stronger, so anything you'd convert would be more expensive. Anyway...
Mine would probably be the original Socom, with the headset, which I bought for a staggering $70, or $107 if I used a converter.
Edit: If you also count expansions, add-ons and subscription fees, WOW would lead on with about $250.
Again, not against celebration. I think it's great that we celebrate things the first time around, but what's the point the second time? We learn history in school, why burden us with celebrating the past over and over when there's no connection? Why not celebrate new things?
