Ahh... The classic double edge sword question! Graphic improvements in hardware of course drive sales & adoption rates for the hardware manufacturer so one has to believe that will continue. Think of it this way; Top tier developer A says we need more horsepower under the hood to get better results. Meanwhile developer B says we can make magic with what's out there.

Now dev A is contracted with or owned by a mega publisher; Lets say, oh Activision just for shits & giggles. Dev B also has a big publisher to please but they don't focus all of their efforts on a nice visual presentation. They pay attention to the little details & how to best make a viable product that has legs (meaning a long shelf life & mass appeal). Now both of these devs have good people working hard to make the best game possible. They simply have different approaches & answer to different corporate managers. Dev A gives you Guitar Hero 3,4,9,27... Dev B gives you Rock Band 2. The difference is striking.

We gamers aren't immune to this either. Not too many years ago this question was bandied about over PS2 & Dreamcast with games like Shenmue & Gran Turismo. I think that one was put to rest awhile ago. We ask the platform makers for more, more, more... Then promptly complain about the cost of entry. High end PC's that can play the cutting of games can run well into the thousands of dollars. And that mostly is processing & graphics power you are paying for. X360 was great when it came out & so was PS3. And yet the cries of cost for buying one continue today. These are both still very viable platforms that can have looonggggg lives ahead of them. But Activision is already saying it's time for something new! And let's not even mention those graphics whores over at Valve!

Do we need better graphics at this point? I don't think so. Unfortunately I'm in the minority. But we gamers should be careful what we ask for. The next round of hardware with true 3D & mega HDTV requirements could cost astronomical amounts!

EA has bigger problems than just a few hurt feelings about how they run their online games.  But I do agree they need to get rid of this silly registration process that exists above XNL or PSN.

I thought ps3 was in last even if it isn't by much.

"
Who's really keeping track anymore. All 3 companies will probably toss a few million dollars at these frauds to make them shut up & go away. Which will mean fewer games that we will really want to play.

Only if M$ finally gives the fat, lazy, feckless consumer what they always wanted. A virtual reality sex simulator kinda like from that horrible Schwarzenegger movie The 6th Day from 2000. THEN they may be onto something. A new reason for society to get fatter and lazier!

But hey, at least we'll all feel good right?

Not implying he was your president. More of a play on how our corporate media in the US treats Mr. Obama as "The Last Best Hope for the World!" Yes I'm being sarcastic but we're bombarded with this here in the US.

As to your broader point it still comes down to money. That is true no matter where you are in the world. Govt's can mandate & plan all they want for new technology & development. But private business will always have the final yay & nay vote. As long as this fraudulent idea of a "Global Economy" that makes everyone co-dependent on everyone else exists, money will be the deciding factor my friend.

I would have agreed with you on this assessment until Uncharted 2. While I have an admitted Sony bias, I must say that UC2 really did exceed all of my expectations. This in NO way diminishes my view of Batman. I still think this game earns it's place among multi-plats as GOTY.  I just have the personal feeling that UC2 was that much better. I did by the way review Batman: AA for this site so if you are curious what I thought of it just read me review. You & me have much in common on our views of this game.

" @Linkyshinks: And yet there's plenty of America that doesn't even have broadband internet. 2020 is a nice dream. "
Much of the world dude.   Many governments around the world are looking to address that fast, I know here in the UK we are steadily attempting to improve our broadband coverage. It's due largely to the fact that in these times it's absolutely essential for good commerce. Companies shouldn't have to relocate for lack of having broadband, but many currently do, and not just in the US. It happens here also.  Your new president seems well clued up about it's importance, so I think things will improve in the U.S, as they will globally in the next decade.  "
Let's not be so quick to give our Pres here in the US credit for this. These wheels have been in motion for years before he was even heard of. The reason it's not widely available in the US right now is because there are too many hands in the pie wanting a freebie. Plain & simple. No tech companies want to invest big money in infrastructure & networks only to have their product be given away by Govt decree.

Sadly this is the state of affairs here in the US nowadays, so broadband coverage is going to continue to suck much ass for many more years. I myself live sandwiched between 4 large metropolitan areas that have broadband. 3G, 4G, WAN, LAN,  satellite, microwave, you name it. But truth be told my little town has really taken a major hit the last 4-5 years in job loss & economics. Translation; high unemployment (33% as of last week), shrinking populace & tax base. City & county management's idea to turn things around you say? Free broadband & HDTV for ALL residents! No kidding. That's the plan. Any guess as to why we don't have broadband in my area & why I use wireless?

No I don't feel sorry for him at all. I mean he's got his dream job of making games for a living & by all accounts made a nice egg for himself doing that at Lucasarts. The story of the tragic artist this or the poor working class songwriter doesn't apply here. Game Designers are only celebrities to a small fraction of game players. The majority of the public knows not of their existence. And when these guys & gals do well for themselves, they drive Ferrari's & live in swank mansions. Not the pitiful digs you & I call home!

As for the games just get both. That's what I'm doing.  They both look like they will be great. Uncharted 2 will be fanatstic as will Brutal Legend. I personally want to see Brutal Legend do well to stick it to Activision like Ghostbusters did.

Best bet is wait for at least 3 months after release & see how much trouble the OS in having with compatibility & security issues. Or don't hook this up to the net. But I think M$ requires the net for activation so scratch that.
