1066: The Battle for Middle Earth - Review (+ Video tribute)

So I am supposed to sketch a historical battle scene for my assignment (First Year Architecture), and after asking around on Giantbomb, I've decided on sketching out the events from and before the Battle of Hastings.

This led me to watch the documentary/film 1066: The Battle for Middle Earth. And boy, was I blown away.
There's obviously not much I can tell about the plot, as it is all history and the movie didn't have much control over it, but the creators managed to tell the story by highlighting certain characters, and by placing them at important positions throughout the film. This gives the documentary a more cinematic feel, and with backstories attached to each of them, the viewer is easily affected by what the characters go through.

I'm not much of a movie critic, but I can say the battle scenes were one of the best, most realistic and engrossing ones I've ever seen. There was something about each fight that made me feel as if it all really was happening before my eyes, with parts such as pre-battle oaths, speeches, tactics, formations and fighting styles. I felt as if I was on the battlefield watching the two sides take on each other.

The soundtrack is surprisingly good. It almost gave the film the feel of a blockbuster theater release.
Also, it is not just a history lesson, as there is humor and also the story is told through the perspective of the common man. There is a lot of gore and violence in the movie, and though the film may not be 100% accurate in terms of  things such as small costume and prop mistakes, it is an amazingly well-made entertainer.

So if you're feeling a little battle thirsty and want to see a moving and epic story, I recommend you watch this great documentary.

Also, since I loved it so much, I made this music video tribute to the movie and the heroes that have been depicted.
