Negligible differences, getting Red Dead Redemption

So my brother messaged me earlier today here is roughly how the dialogue went:
Brother: hey I'm getting red dead for the xbox, any objections?
Me: Isn't it also on the ps3? I'd rather get it for that because I prefer the ps3 controller.
Brother: really? the xbox version got better reviews.
Me: Well from what I know there aren't any major difference, it is a great game either way.
Brother: look here. xbox is crisper and more shrubs!
Me: Alright fine..
-End dialogue-

*First off I should say that I am very excited to finally be getting and being able to play this game, and my brother messaging me came as a big surprise!*

So...I knew something was wrong when he said, "xbox version got better reviews." Because I knew red dead is an amazing game regardless of platform, and the only reason I could think of was slightly different graphics. And from my brothers next message, I was right. So I just sort of gave up at the end because I didn't want to argue about it, but I started thinking about what I don't like about these system comparisons and here's what I came up with:

System comparisons are almost useless because really when you're looking at them, you're only judging the game on one aspect, the graphics. It's not like you're going to be sitting on the couch thinking "oh this game would look so much worse/better on the other system, just look at those shrubs." Instead, you're going to be playing the game... learning about the characters, doing stuff.. Sure you can stare at screenshots comparisons, but really what you're doing is seeing which screenshot looks better. It is very different actually being IN the game and seeing and playing the game the way it is meant to be seen and played.

I feel I should say something about why I prefer the ps3 controller over xbox controller. I just find the ps3 more responsive and sensitive. I don't like how the xbox controller is shaped, I find the battery pack gets in the way of comfortably holding the controller, and also the triggers and buttons feel more stiff overall. Also the d-pad is much better on ps3 controller. This is just my personal preference, and with red dead redemption I knew I wouldn't be bothered with whatever graphical differences there were, and I greatly prefer the ps3 controller.

In any case I am excited to get a chance to play this game and look forward to finding out what makes it such a great experience!

winning more with a character you play less than your main?

Has this ever happened to anyone? That you find you win more with a character that you don't use that often.

I'm asking because I use Rufus, and my win rate is about 25%, played over 400 matches. But with Blanka my win rate is 54% (but only around 20 matches). A few times I consider to switch to Blanka partly because of this and no one likes losing. Then I wonder if I win just because people have less experience against Blanka. Then I also remember that I can't do down-up charges to save my life, or mash (I always blame the console controller). But there's that player, i think it's wolfkrone or shizza, pad chun li, which is pretty crazy, I cannot imagine mashing punches or kicks upwards of 5 times (consistently) in a few frames.

I think another part of the draw of playing Blanka is that he doesn't have alot of combos and relies mostly of keeping his opponent guessing and getting of single-attacks that take off over 100dmg. Which explains also why I sometimes like to play El Fuerte (he is just so awesome). I can't remember my win rate with El Fuerte... but I don't remember winning too much.

Steam support for Windows 2000 ending in 2 days, hmmm

So I play TF2 fairly regularly on the computer I'm using now. It runs windows 2000, but for the last few months every time I load up Steam I am greeted with the message, "Support for Steam on Windows 2000 will be ending on August 31st, please look to upgrading your operating system."  This really doesn't seem like too much of a problem, and it probably isn't a problem for the majority of PC gamers.

I have a new computer that my dad put together to bring to university. I've already transferred most of my music, game, browser files, so it feels alright. I realize I probably won't have much time to game because I'll be studying a lot, but it's nice to have. This school computer is actually a lot better than the computer I'm using right now (I tested it with TF2). The screens bigger, there's more memory, better graphics card and so on. But yet I feel sort of sad. It's like the end of an era. I've finished high school. For the longest time I've been bugging my dad to upgrade the operating system to Windows XP, Vista, 7, and finally I get a computer that has Windows XP (the one I am bringing to school). It's gonna be interesting these next few years, so much is happening in such short time...

first time perfect (SSF4)

I can still hardly believe it, wow just... oh my god. It took a few moments after the round for me to realize what just happened. Then I looked at my health bar and was like, "what have I done, omg what just happened? O_O did I do that?" Then I felt a smile spread across my face, I was just so happy and amazed at the same time.

I think I need to watch it again to figure out what he was doing wrong, and I think I'll upload it later to share, just wow... It was me (Rufus) a against a Ryu player, he had around 1000 bp. It was in ranked and I won 0-2. I can't even remember the first round.. It was a little close I remember, I think I had around 30% health left. The second round was just... wow.. I remember getting jf.HK into EX snakes early on.  Then I kept thinking throughout the whole match, "don't get predictable, throw, block, crossup dive kick stuffs srk on wakeup, is he going to uppercut or is he going to stick out limbs, maybe go for overhead or back up and wheel kick, wait I just did that" and wow... somehow I was able to dizzy him and pull out the perfect. At no point was I thinking, "alright I'm gonna perfect this guy," but I ended up pulling it out! Wow.

I spent about a minute or so just sitting on the couch smiling and laughing, and to save the replay. Then I played a few more matches to make sure the win didn't get to my head. =)

One of the matches I played after was against a 80 bp Cody with the title "Go Easy On Me", I felt sorry for him because I used to be like that. After the first round I could tell he was a genuine beginner. After the match I msg'd him saying "don't stop trying keep at it =)." Because I remembered one time I lost to a Honda player 3-0, and he said the same thing to me after the match and I remember feeling atleast a little bit better.

How much do games really need to "innovate"?

http://www.examiner.com/xbox-360-in-national/why-fighting-games-suck-3

Quote from the highly opinionated article above:
"Racing games have become increasingly realistic, FPS evolve to meet the demands of the online gaming community, sandbox games have become more complex and detailed, and even RPGs have changed significantly from their early days."

Firstly all game genres can be reduced to a few fundamental things that don't change from game to game. Racing games: you control a car, press buttons to speed up/slow down, try to place first or beat a time limit. FPS: point and shoot. Fighting: pick character(s) and fight other character(s). By that same token you can reduce all video games to a fundamental principle: player has controller, controller inputs make stuff happen on a display.

So really, how much do games have to "change"? If we accept video games as a form of art (which I do), we can ask the same question as "how much does a new piece of music have to change to make it new or interesting?" How about a new movie, new novel, new play, a new painting? Really what keeps video games interesting whether it is Fighting, Racing, FPS, RPG or any other genre you can think of, is that each new game reiterates on the same fundamental principle that all games are based on "player has controller, controller inputs make stuff happen on a display", and present things in a new interesting way. This is what makes games interesting. There's a reason people still listen to Beethoven, or read Shakespeare, and there's a reason why people keep playing video games.

TF2 Highland Tournament, with a badge for all participants

Here for the whole deal.

Arg, I got so hype just thinking about it finally get my feet in some competitive. Then I'd also have a badge to prove it! How nice, but then I realized I'd be in school when the tournament finally gets underway. I mean I'm gonna be studying AND taking care of myself. But really, it just came back to the same reason why I never get into competitive TF2 in the first place >>> I just don't want to deal with the stress of "hey we have a game to play tomorrow, get on to practice."

From the sound of it this event seems to be more open about including players of all skill level, so maybe the "practicing" that I'm imagining is going to be more lax and casual, but I don't know. So if anyone gets in on it, I would LOVE to hear how it goes, from finding a team to playing the matches, and screenshots of ur character(s) with the spiffy new medal!

P.S. also since it's organized by the EUROPEAN TF2 league (man I am just finding these excuses now), you might be playing on european servers and on european times.

ramblings of a rufus player part 2

damn ps3 controller! it's not broken, i can still use it. But sometimes when i press R1 it feels like somethings stuck under it and when I press it it doesn't go down all the way, I have R1 mapped to HP, so whenever this happens it just screws with my timing even more, because I feel like i have to compensate for it. I usually try shaking the controller and it returns back to normal. The rubber covering for the left analog stick tore off as well, so now it's just the plastic. Which isn't too bad, but after playing about an hour, I start to feel the plastic edge digging into my thumb everytime I do a motion with it. damn... I WILL get a fightstick someday damnit!

anyways, practice is coming along. I still can hardly hit st.LK, st.HP xx HP Tornado, but whatever. Also I've been having trouble with mid-screen EX-Messiah kick, FADC, Ultra... instead of ultra a snake strike comes out. I hardly have problem with this in corner. I think what's happening is that it's registering my dash and the qcf as a DP motion, and I'm hitting punches too early... arg.. Spacing is improving... I think...

also, I've picked up Akuma as an alt. Something about the way LK Tatsu xx HP Shoryuken is too cool. I still think it's sort of annoying how he always sounds like he has stomache cramps and grunts when doing his moves, but hey he's pretty fun to play as, so yeah... Also I can mash out a shoryuken without it ever being misinterpreted as an ultra!  Wait...I guess that's why I like LK Tatsu xx HP Shoryuken so much, because that's exactly what I do during that combo (wiggle the stick from down to forward, and repeatedly hit R2). =o
