Dedicated Servers (Article link) and my thoughts

 http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points/6768-Its-the-End-of-the-War-as-We-Know-It

The article touches on MW2 not supporting dedicated servers on the PC. It made me realize why some free FPS games like War Rock and Combat Arms really suck, because they don't have dedicated servers and as such cheating is more likely to occur.

I had wanted to buy CoD4 in the past but decided not to. I was mostly afraid that my computer couldn't run it. The computer I'm using right now is still running windows 2000, but runs TF2 and other games fairly smoothly at a lower resolution. I still play TF2 whenever I can, it's still fun as hell. But now whenever I see new FPS games coming out I ask myself a few questions... "Can I run this on my PC?" "If not, is it worth it getting it on the console and having to learn a new control scheme?" The answers are usually no. I am just way too comfortable using my mouse and keyboard.

This past summer I had actually  downloaded and play the demo for Battlefield 1943. It was mad fun. As a BF2 vet, I felt right at home driving around, capping points and killing the enemy. It was all very nostalgic. However I decided not to buy it for 2 reasons. 1. Having to learn to play FPS on a console and 2. My parents hate paying for things online.

Like it says in the article, there's no way of knowing where PC gaming is going we can only wait and hope for the best. I don't know when my dad will finally upgrade all the computers to Windows 7, or install new hardware. Or maybe in the near future I will concede and switch to the console forever. Who knows? I don't, but in the mean time I'll try having fun with the stuff I have.
