Is this indoctrination?

Now I'm a guy who believes in the right to free speech, and the right to believe whatever you want to believe, but today I was so fucking pissed at what happened as I was walking home from my High School.
So like I said, I was walking out of my school, and literally on the sidewalk that serves as the boundary from our school zone, are these full grown male adults passing out what looks to be these orange tiny books. At first I thought "Ah shit, a bunch of people trying to get me to vote for some stupid politician." But as I got closer, I saw them pulling these tiny orange books from large white boxes entitled; "Psalms". That's when I started to think to myself; "No fucking way in hell, they can't do that right next to school property," as me and my friend walk past one of these guys my friend takes one of these tiny orange books, looks at it and hands it to me. I look at it and sure enough guys it says "The New Testament: Psalms", me being dumb still in disbelief starts flipping through the book and true to what the damn tiny book says, it is Psalms.
Then I look in front of me and see another guy standing by the other road that kids take when leaving the school, and I look back and realize that on every road out of the school there are guys passing out these fucking things. I look at my friend shocked and he says to me; "Dude, they're on the sidewalk, and its off school property, it might be legal, hell even to me this is messed up and I'm Baptist, but we can't do anything about it."
So I have to ask you guys, is my friend right? Can they seriously do that? I mean if it was the Koran or the Torah that was being passed out, you would have a full on protest! This is bullshit that anyone can do this! These were 6-12 grade kids walking home from school, and on every road that exits from the school zone there were these guys passing out "The New Testament", there is no way in hell that is legal! Guys I'm a Christian myself, I was brought up as a Mormon, my whole family is either Mormon or Baptist (Yes it get's funny but that's not the point), and I find this to be complete bullshit!

Please excuse me for my grammar problems, I'm currently working on a huge research paper for school.

Its legal. Don't take it, if you don't like it. Also, yes it is indoctrination, thats how they get ideas on to you.

The only reason religion still exists is because of indoctrination. This is just part of the cycle.

If they did that in my neighbourhood I would hand out posters with quotes from Leviticus, telling them they shouldn't eat shellfish, and Deuteronomy telling them they should kill everyone that doesn't believe in god and make sure nothing ever lives or grows there again.

People do this kind of thing all the time at my University. It is so common that you learn to ignore it (or pick a few up for reading, if that's your preference).

So if they were handing out political pamphlets rather than Psalms it wouldn't be so bad?

It's totally legal. If it makes you feel better, you can ask for a couple and then dispose of them appropriately so that they can't be given to anyone else.

However, if you ever come across Chick tracts, you should keep them. They're hilarious. I actually collect them.

Congratulations, OP, you've just joined the rest of the world.  I can't tell you how many "Watchtower" pamphlets people have tried to pawn off on me at bus stops.  And yes, it's legal.

Why wouldn't it be legal?  Because people don't agree with them?

It's not an uncommon practice. PETA has been known to do it too...God I hate PETA.

Its sort of the same as people out side of a high school giving you brochures for clubs, or drivers ed (NYC doesn't have in school drivers ed). Just don't take it or throw it out if you don't want it.

I was expecting this topic to be more concerned with public school curriculum's being indoctrination, or something like that, but I guess I was wrong.

I'm not a religious person at all and i don't see what the problem is. They're handing out little books. They're not forcing anything on you. They're spreading the ideas they believe to be right. In a very non-hostile way.

Yep. Teaching religion to children in any form is indoctrination. Very young children will believe anything you tell them because they have no concept of logic. How could they? They're children!

There's this Amish family that stands on a street corner every week near my University handing out pamphlets of some kind. I feel bad saying no to the little kids (all 5 of them or something), but if you just aren't interested, you just aren't.

What exactly is supposed to make this illegal? If these guys had been handing out happy bunny fuzzy books you wouldn't have cared. Free speech is a double edged sword.

Now, is it a dick move to make sure they were everywhere you could be? Quite clearly yes.

It is not the same. High school-aged kids are developed enuough to make decisions for themselves. As I said in my post (which I worte before I read this) young children have not yet developed the ability to reason things out for themselves and are therefore highly prone to suggestion. Little kids believe in Santa because they're told he's real. But not to worry, parents will be able to undo this indoctrination easily by filling their heads with their own religion.

People advertise stupid bullshit everywhere. Don't let it bother you. What's important, after all, is that you can see that it's just that: stupid bullshit.

haha indeed. That seems to be the prevailing method. That's why young children should only be taught FACT until they're old enough to interpret things like relligion for themselves.

Define fact. How do you know anything is true? Because the past shows it to be true. How do you know looking to the past is a good way to know truth. Because previous things have been shown to be true in the past. Using the past to prove the validity of looking to the past is circular reasoning and so nothing can ever be shown to be fact.

Ah, I'm just fucking with you. I think that's pretty much right on.

Nothing wrong with that, they are trying to spread the gospel. At least they aren't passing out jehova witness stuff or the koran. They aren't brainwashing anyone, that's what cults do or false religions, you always have a choice to believe or not to believe.
