There's a lot of talk about strategy for keeping your settlements fully stocked and defended, but haven't seen any explanation of WHY. And not even in that philosophical "what really is the point of playing ANY game?" sense, just "what is the worst that could happen if you leave your bases completely defenseless?".

Do raiders destroy buildings and/or steal items you have stored at your workshop benches? It's not like the FOBs in MGSV, where you could boot up the game one day and find that everything you've been hoarding over the last dozen hours has been jacked, right?

Or is the whole settlement aspect mostly a "for fun" thing?

I know Todd Howard said that settlement shops will sell " some of the best items in the game " so there's that. I know my shops are definitely making caps, but I haven't found a way to actually profit off of that, aside from just selling things to them as usual.

I read through some of the various "10 spoiler free tips for Fallout 4" lists that have been floating around, and one of them specifically suggests looking at the settlement stores as mostly just another way to keep your settlers happy. It said that conventional logic would lead one to think that building and leveling up your shops would be a way to get a big payoff in caps and/or resources further down the line, but (in the opinion of whoever wrote these tips) there isn't much profit to be had there.

Granted, the author of that list could be completely wrong about it. Who can say?

If you don't care about what happens to your settlement apart from the junk you're storing there, is there a reason to both defending it? Or is it another FOB situation where I could go to my workbench one day and find that all my broken lamps and alarm clocks and empty bottles have been stolen?

Is this only happening in Fallout or did you go back and try another game?

I haven't tried this specifically lately, but I've definitely been able to play other games in the past with a controller and reached over to my wireless keyboard to take screenshots.

I've heard that some games in the past had issues accepting both KB&M and controller inputs, but I've also played enough games that let you switch inputs on the fly that I assumed this would be a given for a game released in 2015 from such a major developer.

I don't know if this is a weird isolated incident or conflict with something on my end, but I've noticed that when I am using a controller to play the game, it stops recognizing keyboard/mouse inputs. And this even applies to the Steam overlay and screenshot hotkeys. F12 (the Steam screenshot button) does nothing. Shift+tab (the Steam overlay command) does nothing.

If I go into the gameplay options menu and turn controller mode off, then (still with the controller) back out to the start menu so it can save/apply the settings change, then I can use the keyboard and mouse (but not the controller). I haven't tried the Steam hotkeys when in KB&M mode, so for all I know it might not work there either (in which case it would be a matter of the game just somehow not allowing that Steam integration stuff).

Does anyone know of a workaround for this?

The number of other people voting for Toonstruck warms my heart. And for anyone that's on the fence, this is a good example of its sharp, sometimes dark as fuck humor.

Toonstruck

It's a point-and-click adventure game set in a cartoon world where your character is an FMV/digitized Christopher Lloyd. It's basically Vinny: The Game.
