How much DLC is too much DLC?

With the release of Dragon Age II rapidly approaching, I've been thinking about the role of DLC in games. I've always been a pretty big believer that DLC is a great thing when done properly. Bioware and Bethesda have shown that DLC can breathe some life into an older title and really expand on the universe...but horse armor and in-game DLC salesmen have shown that there is a darker, more nefarious side to downloadable content.

Day-One DLC for Dragon Age II (via Bioware forums)

Adder of Antiva, Bow - Signature Edition
Seeker's Bulwark, Shield - Signature Edition
Apostate's Courage, Staff - Signature Edition
Might of the Sten, 2H Sword - Signature Edition
The Exiled Prince, Companion - Signature Edition

Lion of Orlais Shield, Shield - All Pre-Orders
Fadeshear Sword, 1H Sword - All Pre-Orders
The Black Emporium, Store - All New Game Purchases

Hindsight, Belt - Penny Arcade Promotion
Staff of Parthalan, Staff - BioWare Promotion
Hayder's Razor, 2H Sword - Completed Demo

Evra's Might, Ring - Dragon Age Legends
Air of Confidence, Ring - Dragon Age Legends
Evra's Trophy Belt, Belt - Dragon Age Legends
Ivo Family Crest, Amulet - Dragon Age Legends
Dura's Blue Flame, Amulet - Dragon Age Legends

The Irons, Belt - Pre-Order Bonus @ EA Store
Ring of Whispers, Ring - Purchase Bonus @ Epic Weapons
Ser Isaac's Armor, Armor Set - All New Dead Space 2 Purchases
Amulet of Ashes, Amulet - Pre-Order Bonus @ Play.com & Best Buy

Lothering's Lament, Book - Demo IF Activations ≥ 1 000 000 By March 1
The Far Cliffs of Kirkwall, Book - Demo IF Activations ≥ 1 000 000 By March 1

What?

"Surely he must be in jest!" you say, sitting at your computer and reading this wall of text that can't possibly be what he's claiming. But no, I assure you that this is a complete list of all the DLC available for Dragon Age II before the game has even hit retailers.

It just seems like there could be a better way to do this. They're throwing DLC everywhere like it's no one's business. Play our Facebook game? Here's some rings and belts. Play the demo? Here's some weapons! Pre-order the game? More weapons!  Order before a certain date? Get all this stuff for free that we'll charge other users for later. Buy a real replica sword or weapon and we'll give you a ring.

I like DLC, I really do, but I can't help but question why half of this stuff couldn't just be in the game. Even if they made some effort to tie it into the story, like you need to do a quest or two before you can obtain all this crazy equipment. By the looks of things, I will start this game with more equipment than I can carry.

But I'll do it. I'll play your Facebook games, and I'll download your demo and I'll order your signature edition spending hours on the release day not playing your game but downloading your DLC. And all shall tremble before the might of Isaac Hawke, overpowered medieval space engineer.

I agree. It's actually offputting and makes me less enthusiastic about the game, what with having to wait to buy it, since I'll have missed out on all those items etc. that I'd like to be able to access for... you know... buying their game. I mean, they put (minimal) effort into making all of this stuff. I'd kind of expect them to want everyone to have the same awesome experience.

At the same time, I feel like I shouldn't worry. Given the quality of the first game compared to the quality of most of the DLC, I don't think I'll be missing out on much (especially since this is pretty much all items that won't e necessary, but would obviously be nice to be able to get since they'll surely be powerful).

I didn't like all those retailer specific preorder bonuses in Mass Effect 2 nor did I like those little gun packs, and now they're adding a bonus for playing their facebook game?
This makes me want Dragon Age II less.

idc so long as the DLC isn't crap like it seems to be for every Bioware game ever. They really need to keep the expansion content in-house.

The Legion of the Dead, and Juggernaut armor are better. (I have the Ultimate ed, so I don't know if they are in the base game.)
I spent what seemed live forever trying to level up to use the Blood Dragon armor and no sooner did I put it on, I found the LotD Armor and switched.
On my second run through now and I'm finding all the base equipment (Minus Battledress of the Provocateur) is better than the DLC stuff.

As long as they don't chop stuff out of the main game like Fable 3 (black dye crystal/onyx weapon morphs) did, the accessory DLC is fine.

DLC is just part of the hype these days, I guess. Origins had a similar thing going on, with the flash games they had on Bioware's official site. At least most of this stuff is either essentially free (depending on how you value your time), or stuff that you'll get just for buying the game new anyway. My concern is how much will come later, and whether they'll pull the stunt they did with Origins, where a key bit of functionality (having a place to store excess items) was tied to the DLC.

If you are on PC there is a simple solution for retarded day one DLC bonuses:

1. Buy the game.
2. Torrent the version with all the day one DLC included.
3. Profit.

@benjaebe: The only ones that I care about from that massive list are the store, which everyone gets for free, and the companion, which I probably won't get since I don't think Best Buy will carry anything other than the normal edition.

Most of that list reminds of the shitty Cerberus Network stuff that was a waste of disk space.  If I find out that one of the weapons is a sword for an Arcane Warrior then I'll be a little razzed.  Outside of that it's probably all a waste.

Most of it is really small stuff, basic weapons and armor that won't have a huge effect on the game. The rest is cool stuff. I'm only bothered that they screwed so many people out of the signature edition, and that there has yet to be a collectors edition with all of the stuff included.

Yeah all of that junky DLC for just a weapon...no way am I ever going to pay $0.99 for a sword in a video game...i just can't justify that. But the different retailers all getting separate pre-order bonus' does get annoying! I'm pretty sure that I pre-ordered Batman at EBGames before I was even aware that Wal-Mart was offering something else. I only get DLC if its more game play!

@hmmisee: I agree.  Nothing sucks more in my opinion than finding this really interesting weapon or ring on a boss and then looking at my gear and saying "Oh wait, this one I got for pre-ordering is much better".  Just give me the Prince and keep the rest.

Most of these items are pretty meaningless and wont be worth keeping after playing the game for two hours, you are NOT losing anything by playing without them and if for some reason you feel that you got screwed because you didn't get a +2 sword that makes the begining of the game way too easy than you have bigger problems than too much DLC.

I can somewhat see them going crazy with the DLC on the pc versions due to it being easier to add in content to it, for the consoles I'd hope that they'd at least put all the weapon extras as a single pack to discover in the game. To put the weapons of that number out separately as different areas of DLC is a bit silly to me though I can understand why they are wanting to provide bonuses to users in all these areas.

My issue with DLC weapons like this, Dragon Age 1 & even with Mass Effect2 was without any real way to compare existing weapons in the game to these DLC items, it made them as something completely voluntary. As in I didn't want to get them as they might not be any better than what I had at the time or just not worth the effort to get, I'd rather have DLC weapons/trinkets as free DLC per console/PC then have the paying DLC for the bonus missions.

Yeah its getting a little out of control with the DLC, particularly the day one promotion pre-order stuff.

Honestly I feel like pre-order DLC is a joke 90%. They can never make it too good, or people who buy the game later will feel pissed off and gipped. But they have to make it good enough to sound appetizing to game hyped consumers before the game is released, cause let's face it, if you find out your preorder special was junk, 9 times out of 10 you won't care, cause you'll be too buried in the game to notice.

@Brodehouse: The majority of it actually isn't preorder DLC at all. It's stupid stuff, like signing up for a newsletter or visiting their Penny Arcade promotion page, playing their Facebook game or spending $15 dollars at a replica weapons shop only tangentially related to the game. For Origins they even had DLC you could only get by shopping at Hot Topic.

I'm not against pre-order stuff because I know that's how they give incentive for people to preorder their game, it's just the overwhelming amount of DLC that they're giving out for pointless random shit makes me wonder.

Well you really didn't need the chest. I thought I needed the chest, so I bought. After I had five minutes with it I said to myself "Why am I storing this stuff?"  Why was I keeping armor and weapons I was not using? If the stuff was not good enough to have on hand, why keep it? Same with Borderlands

Because there's probably already a fuckton of great loot already in the game, and they're trying to goose people into pre-orders.  I don't understand, they make the game with all the stuff in it, then there's all this bonus stuff they create to get people to buy new, and you're upset about what?  If the game doesn't have enough loot without the bonus stuff, you shouldn't buy the game.  But of course it has enough loot in it, and they just want to get you to pre-order, so they give you an incentive.

You're actually asking for there to be no bonus items whatsoever.  If it wasn't for them trying to get pre-orders and new copy sales, they wouldn't even waste their time making this stuff.

This kind of DLC is the kind that upsets me. I enjoy "expansion" packs after day one that increase your time spent in the game. Those rings and everything really add nothing to the atmosphere to game other than "look what I got lifting a finger!"

If developers could just stick to solid content for DLC, then that part of the industry might actually flourish.

Warden's Keep was nothing compared to how bad some of the other DLC was. Darkspawn Chronicles is basically king, for being a full hour or so of aggressively bad tedium, but Golems of Agmarack wasn't so good either, it's lauded difficulty mostly coming from the part where there are 6 golems all throwing rocks at you over and over again. Haven't played Return to Ostagar, and haven't played Leliana's Song, so I don't know how those shaped up. Witch Hunt is alright, mostly because it seems like Bioware put actual effort into it instead of just a B team of level programmers. Still not great. Shale is a weird case, basically being part of the main game anyways. Of course, if you had to buy it separately $15 is a little too steep, even for a party member as good as Shale.  Thus, my expectations are somewhat... low. Thankfully, I pre-ordered the signature edition and won't have to pay for the Exiled Prince and will also get all the meaningless items I just derided.

Basically, what I've figured out is that all DLC from all developers is a gamble of quality at this point. Fallout 3 had exactly 2 good pieces of content, Mass Effect 2's free stuff wasn't great (paid stuff was alright, I guess. Shadow Broker was pretty amazing), both of the Resident Evil 5 packs were passable, and Borderlands was pretty mixed too. There's no real consistency to any of it as game developers are still figuring out what works and what doesn't. Shadow Broker does. Horse Armor doesn't.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. The only DLC worth getting is the companion, and if you didn't pre-order then you have to fork out another $7 for it when you've already fucking paid full price for the game. I'm not supporting EA's bullshit, so I doubt I'll be paying for it.

It can all depends on the pricing, if it's expensive a lot of DLC being released is only going to shine a light on that and make it seem ridiculous.

Also if I'm not up to date with a particular game and it has a lot of DLC it can seem overwhelming, I still haven't played Dragon Age yet and the thought of all that content scares me a little. I wouldn't mind new content for Mass Effect 2 though, I can never get enough, no costume packs don't count!

It's discusting to see such a beautiful company like bioware doing this kind off sh*t. I personally will simply ignore all of this nonsense, the dlc from the first dragon age didn't really add that much for me to the story. Apart from the Shale dlc which came free with all new copies of dragon age, so im not worried that i'll be a missing out on too much. Though i do think it's time for gaming companies to draw a line with all this dlc nonsense, and i advice them to take a look on this page http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/01/06/the-10-commandments-of-dlc/  and think about what dlc should be like.

Sure, there's an absolute shit ton of them, but the only things you should care about are the Companion Quest and the Black Emporium, as those are the only things that represent meaningful content instead of just fluffy bonus items of dubious quality. I have to wonder just how worthwhile the quest DLC will actually be, though.  The downloadable quests for the first game were by and large disappointing and shallow, with the only purpose behind them to acquire content that should have been in the base game (i.e.: A chest to store all of my excess stuff.)

This is kind of gross to me. Why can't this just be in the game as a reward for doing a quest? Also that Isaac Clarke armor is out of place.

Just preorder it everywhere, and give all the extra copies to friends.

Then file for bankruptcy.

Only thing I care about is the companion. I don't need cheat loot for a game that's already going to be too easy.

Promotional DLC is fine by me, but the Pre-Order stuff annoys me sometimes, because it can be spread out among different retailers. Bioware/EA did not do that for DA2 really, but on the flipside DA2 on Steam was left out of the early Signature edition offer for no apparent reason. Probably still get it on Steam, but it's a sticking point.

As long as they're decent I don't mind them, but I think over 5 is too many.

" I think the route EA was taking with other games was ok. Limited Edition at the same price for all pre-orders & early buyers with some extra stuff at the same price was ok. Also the online functionality only for new games is ok I guess. But retailer specific bonuses or the limited edition (signature editon) preorder deadline ending before release are terrible things. EA is certainly testing the waters with DAII. "

The deadline was especially bad because up to that point they had shown nearly nothing of Dragon Age 2's gameplay. It was fucking ridiculous that we had to preorder and base it off of shitty demo videos recorded with hand cameras on youtube.

I don't mind this sort of thing too much..  It's all free and only exists to hype the game and generate more interest.  If you miss any of it, it's not like you're missing anything big.  If they were charging for all this insignificant content, then I'd have a problem.  (see Fable 3).

The Facebook game is a bit more questionable, as it's utter crap and does require you to pay if you want to make any real progress.  (Though you can complete the whole thing for free, it would just be very time consuming).
