Best of 2017

Looking back, the releases this year had Styyyyyle in spades.

I (unfortunately) have not been able to pick up a Switch, so there will be some rather obvious gaps in this list, but I'm pretty happy with what I've got. I spent a lot of the year going back through my backlog and getting things off my list. Well, up until the point where my pc (which was still running Vista) bit the dust. It was the perfect chance to update literally everything.

List items

  • The Directors Cut DLC breathed a ton a life back into this for me. Being a Super Sentai fanboy absolutely helped, but this is up there as one of my all-time favourites.

  • Speaking of style, Persona 5 delivers. It was hotly anticipated, and did not disappoint. Persona 4 is still my absolute favourite game- it was not unseated by Persona 5, but it was close.

  • The best Yakuza game. A huge improvement on just about every level. Everything seemed like a well-needed quality of life upgrade that I didn't know I wanted. Humor abound in this fast-paced, spectacular dramatic beat-em-up.

  • I can't believe that I almost missed this one entirely.

Up until a couple days ago, I hadn't even heard about Doki Doki Literature Club, and left to my own devices, it would have stayed that way.

It wasn't until looking around the forums that I saw some chatter about it.

Sure, playing it at 4 am on a sleepless night helped, but this has a surprisingly strong showing and earned its spot.

  • Who DOESN'T want to run a secret plot to resurrect the unspeakable horrors while keeping an entire town in check?

  • I really dig the Windows 95 vibe of the interface in this game. On top of that it's a fun little time-eater.

  • War of the Chosen DLC.

The Beast crew doing their XCOM streams made me realize just how much an improvement this is over the original.

  • More Destiny. The changes took some time, but I can see why they happened.

  • Man, I would have had no problem doing my chores every day if it consisted of taking care of these cute little buggers.

  • I was quite surprised that The Elder Scrolls Legends had as strong a showing as it did.
