DOOM: Eternal Review 0

This review was originally posted on my personal blog. My feelings on DOOM: Eternal are more complicated than I thought they were going to be leading up to the game’s release. I loved the crap out of 2016’s DOOM. Hell, it was my game of the year that year, but I don’t know that I’ll be able to say the same about DOOM: Eternal once the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, 2020. Don’t get me wrong, DOOM: Eternal is a great time, but I couldn’t help shake the...

More Like ReSnore (Presses Barrel of Gun Firmly Against Temple Creating an Indentation) 0

There are things I want to really like about ReCore. The movement and traversal mechanics can feel really good, there are interesting and unique elements to the combat, and there's a great deal of charm emanating from each robot frame that you'll take along with you on your journey. There's just so much fighting you along the way that it will eventually beat you into submission. The game is riddled with baffling design decisions, bugs and monotony. Being that ReCore was head up by Armature, a c...

A Solid Entry in the Deus Ex Series 0

Deus Ex: is still really fun. The ‘approach a situation the way you want’ formula etched out in 2011’s Human Revoution is a really satisfying approach to first-person action and Mankind Divided makes some additions and improvements to ensure that it doesn’t feel stale, as you shoot, punch, and stab your way through the fifteen-some-odd hours of the game’s campaign. More even, if you’re avid about really exploring the world. While there were some technical hic...

Asemblance is an Obtuse, Mysterious Thriller. And I Love it. 0

I had no idea what to expect from Asemblance when I installed it on my Playstation 4 a few days ago. Still, having played thorough all that I currently can of the game, I’m admittedly a little confused. At Asemblance’s core, is a mystery that you’ll unravel by playing through a series of loops inspired heavily by 2014’s horror stand-out, P.T. As you progress through the game’s limited environments it becomes apparent that not everything is being presented to you up...

Inside Review - An Excellent Followup to Limbo 0

I feel like I missed out on the cultural impact that Limbo had when it was released. I played the game and enjoyed it, but did so years after it dropped on Xbox Live. By the time I had gone through it, everyone had more or less cooled on the game. Videos had circulated and the shock of the grim tone and grizzly deaths had subsided. That’s why when I found out that Playdead’s second game Inside was dropping this year I was determined to get my hands on it and be part of the experience...

Doom is One HELL of a game (Kill Me) 0

Doom is exactly what a Doom game should be in 2016. It’s fast, gory, high-octane and chock full of Satan. If they weren’t past the point of self parody, it might be the type of thing that would cause a good-old-fashioned moral panic, and it’s better than I ever could have hoped for. Having grown up playing Doom, I wasn’t sure how to feel about the franchises’ revival. Especially after the multiplayer beta earlier this year. I’m glad I gave it a chance though, ...

Don't Count Assassin's Creed Out Just Yet. 0

Like pretty much anybody else, I was about ready to call it quits with the Assassin’s Creed series after last year’s entry, Unity. It wasn’t so much that the game was technically disappointing, but on a philosophical and design level the game just wasn’t fun. There was so much to do in the game, but I hardly had a good time doing any of it. Word of mouth and my ability to forgive to a fault led me to putting Assassin’s Creed: Syndiacte into my Playstation 4 this ye...

Call of Duty is Still a Threat. Black Ops 3 Review 0

Rest assured this year’s Call of Duty release is still packed full of shooting guys in the face. It may not be as polished as last year’s Advanced Warfare but it’s still a lot of fun, providing its share of set-piece moments, additions to the combat and movement mechanics and cameos from big name actors. I can’t say that I’m as thrilled with Black Ops 3 as I was Advanced Warfare, but if you’re looking for a solid and fully featured first person shooter, then ...

Rise of the Tomb Raider Review 0

The adventures of Lara Croft have never been as fun or looked as good as they do in the latest release from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics, Rise of the Tomb Raider. What Rise of the Tomb Raider offers is a brilliantly paced third person action adventure game that’s packed with side content both rewarding and enjoyable to complete. While I adored the previous release in the series, Crystal Dynamics have managed to improve upon the formula in every imaginable way to deliver one of the mos...

Star Wars: Battlefront is Fun, But Feels a Little Lacking 0

The release of one of this year’s more anticipated shooters has come across as pretty divisive. Understandably since, after all, Star Wars: Battlefront is lacking in areas that previous entries to the series and even some of this years other releases aren’t. The game has almost nothing resembling single player outside of some training missions and a lacklustre horde mode, and what is present in the multiplayer, while fun, is a little light. The game doesn’t come across as some...

Mortal Kombat X Review 0

Mortal Kombat X is an incredibly solid fighting game that does more than enough to appeal to fans of the series and welcome newcomers alike. Like its predecessor from 2011, MKX is packed with an almost intimidating amount of content as the team at Netherrealm studios continue to go above and beyond what’s expected out of your run of the mill fighting game. While I do lament the loss of a traditional challenge tower like that found in Mortal Kombat 9 or even Injustice: Gods Among us, I s...

Metroidvania is a Dumb Word. Axiom Verge Review 0

I really love this game. No, more than that. I really love this style of game. The type of ability-dependant progression at the core of the Metroid and Castlevania series offer some of the most satisfying experiences I’ve had over my gaming career. Being of this ilk, what Axiom Verge does, it does very well, and despite culling much of its look from Metroid, Axiom Verge does enough to distance itself from the series making it a familiar yet fresh experience. The game opens with s...

Shinji Mikami Would Like You to Once Again Enter a World of Survival Horror. 0

It’s rather difficult to talk about The Evil Within without mentioning Resident Evil 4. After all, the games share a director along with a selection of other similarities despite a tonal shift and a less stationary-while-shooting protagonist. Though where Resident Evil 4 was very much an action game masquerading as horror, I couldn’t shake the feeling that The Evil Within was attempting to adhere more closely to tropes of the survival horror genre while desperately longing to be an ...

In Space No One Can Hear Me Screaming In Frustration. Alien: Isolation Review (Warning, some spoilers) 0

Alien: Isolation is a beautiful looking game that successfully manages to capture the aesthetic and atmosphere of Ridley Scott’s 1979 Alien, that is unfortunately plagued by a host of baffling design choices, technical issues and frustrating gameplay. I should preface that I absolutely adore Scott’s Alien, and my endearment for the series has allowed me to convince myself that I’ve enjoyed entries that would otherwise be seen as nothing more than sub-par, (I’m looking at...
