My favourite games roughly in the order I played them in.

List items

  • HELL MARCH

  • Wow, it's REALLY hard to pick my favourite Mario Kart. I really like 64, Double Dash, DS and 8 for different reasons so I'll just pick Mario Kart 64 as it was my first Mario Kart and I had a ton of fun with friends.

  • I may not have had an N64 as a kid, but my neighbour did, and boy did we play lots of multiplayer. I don't know if I've ever completed the single player on GoldenEye, and as a kid I didn't care. Golden Gun on Caves and Temple all day long.

  • I love all 3 OG Crash games (and CTR and Crash Bash too) but Warped wins with it's unlockable abilities and time trials, even if ultimately it may not have been as big of a leap forward as Crash 2 was from the original game.

  • Before this game I had only borrowed Game Boys from friends to play Pokémon games, so Crystal was the first one I actually owned. I love the originals, but Gen 2 Pokémon games are some of the best video game sequels ever, and Crystal was an upgrade over Gold and Silver on top of that.

  • Okay, I tried to limit this list to one game per series and I really do love Gen 2, but the Gen 3 games are the ones I return to most. To me there's something about Pokemon on the GBA that just feels like it's where Pokemon belongs. I certainly prefer the Pokemon designs of the previous two generations but I love the look and feel of the GBA games.

  • I was just the right age to get way too into this game. Shadow was so cool and edgy yo. Still my all time favourite Sonic game. Once you get a handle on the controls and camera those Sonic and Shadow stages are just a blast to play through. The game has plenty of flaws (though it's not as busted as the first Sonic Adventure) but I don't care, I love it.

Also, Live & Learn by Crush 40 lives rent free in my head forever.

  • I didn't have an N64 of my own as a kid so I didn't get to play much Ocarina of Time. Wind Waker though? Completed it at least 3 times. Heck I didn't even mind all the sailing.

Breath of the Wild definitely has a chance of competing with Wind Waker, if I ever get around to finishing it...

  • Pretty much the perfect portable Sonic game, and perhaps one of the purest Sonic experiences, period. The classic games and Mania are of course fantastic, but I feel like the pace of this game is pretty much unmatched and I don't think people talk about the Sonic Advance games enough. Sonic Rush deserves an honourable mention too.

  • I tend to play the latest iteration of Smash rather than go back to this one, but in my heart I know Melee is the best. It's just an unbelievably technical, lightning-fast fighter, and it's the game that instantly made me want a GameCube after first playing it. I didn't care what was on PS2 or Xbox, they didn't have Smash Bros.

  • There's something amazingly smooth yet precise about the gameplay in SoulCalibur II. Also Link is in it and that's pretty crazy. I like IV a whole lot and have probably put more time into that game, but II is the defining game of the series for me.

  • You know, Tekken 3 had a spot on my list for the longest time, and it's almost neck-and-neck with this one for me, but Tekken 5 is just better. When you go back to Tekken 3 now it feels kind of cumbersome. After they experimented a bit with Tekken 4, Tekken 5 was a full return to form that really defined modern Tekken and it hasn't been changed too much since. It was also when I really got into Tekken and got pretty good at it.

  • Dumped even more hours into this game than Burnout 3, and I really liked Burnout 3.

  • It's a tough call between this and Halo 2, but I think I put more time into 3 ultimately.

  • Didn't play the games before it, but with all the buzz around this game I decided to buy it on Steam. This is one of the funniest, dumbest games I've ever played. I recommend it to anyone and everyone.

  • This is the best Pac-Man game, it's so fast and frenetic and fun, great soundtrack too. There are a bunch of other great Pac-Man games but it'll be really hard to ever top this one.

  • The character designs, the story, the twists and turns, the phenomenal soundtrack, the... oh man. It's hard to list this without going into detail about what makes it so good. If you haven't played it yet, don't look up the plot, just play it and see it through to the end. This game will mess you up and make you feel things. You'll think about it for months afterwards.
