It's a tough call. Yeah, not a lot of developers would be allowed to take 4 years to make a game. Final Fantasy is one of those rare rule breaking exceptions, thanks to the intensely dedicated fan base.
We're currently more of a TV episode/immediate satisfaction society anyways, building stories upon existing settings and characters.
Waiting too long for a sequel could loose the interest of the audience, which would be more difficult to regain over pissing a few people off with a buggy release.
Am I upset that my Fallout: New Vegas crashes my system? Of course. But I'm pretty sure the majority of buggy games aren't quite as console exploding buggy, so it tends to fly.
