At this point I would not be surprised if Sony delayed PSN store from coming back tomorrow because quite frankly they haven't kept any of their promises. They weren't even sorry for exposing people's personal info this is just classless from such a large company. I wish they would sincerely just said its our bad entirely and we messed up and not just say they were attacked.
If price doesn't matter to you then go with the Macbook or Mac instead of a Windows computer. There are a lot more programs however, for PC then Mac even though Mac does have some really good exclusives like imovie and garage band but most things are made to run on PC. When you talk about being technically proficient do you mean fixing your OS or fixing your pc or just navigating your OS. If its the latter Mac's are very simple so you shouldn't have a problem with it but you want to fix an internal component it will be pretty hard to fix yourself. A PC on the other hand can be fixed by a multitude of people and is a lot easier to fix in that regard.
You should definitely get the i7 model for your friend because it is a 100$ more and a lot better because of the processor difference because the i7 is way better than the i5 one which is the one I think you were asking about getting your friend. I looked on the Dell website @ the Mx11 and they have a 999 one which comes with a i5 and nvidia 540 with 2gb's of video RAM which is crazy for a laptop graphics card or any graphics card for that matter. The MX11 1199 laptop should be able to play everything on high settings pretty easily. I personally don't really like laptops because you can't upgrade them like you can a desktop computer but the MX11 seems like a good laptop for your friend to game on.
Your specs are alright but you need a graphics boost for sure because a 9500gt won't cut it for games like the Witcher 2 or any new games really anymore. If you have the money to spend you should upgrade your card to a 5670 because you can get one on Amazon for 84 dollars but, if you have the money you should upgrade your processor to a quad core phenom and get a 5770 or higher end graphics card if you want to play games on high settings.
