just finished Dead Space

so as the blog title says, I just finished Dead Space, and I have to say that this is probably the greatest Survival Horror game I have ever played, the story is really good, the gameplay mechanics are fantastic, and all the atmosphere makes the game pretty scary. The only thing that I disliked was that the game is a bit short and it's a bit on the easy part, but still it's a very enjoyable game. The best thing is that I only paid 20 bucks for this masterpiece. :D What I wonder is how the sequel will work. :o

Unless its a really good Co-op thing that is ok but Deathmatch? Ill pass.

Dead Space is not the greatest survival horror game you've ever played. Not because it isn't good enough -- Dead Space is one of my best games I've ever played -- but because it isn't a survival horror game. Much like Resident Evil 4 and 5, it's an action game.

@Icemael: I beg to differ, to me this wasn't much of an action game because sometimes you aren't killing or fighting as you would in an action game, like in RE4 and RE5 that you're always on a killing rampage, also, this game focuses more on setting a great scary atmosphere other than going on a necromorph killing spree. My opinion that is. :P

Its definietly one of the best games i've played in recent years, I can't wait for the sequel.  If you want a challenge try beating it on hard only using the plasma cutter.

Then you should play Extraction. It keeps the gameplay mechanics and atmosphere intact, adds magnificent action and if you ask me improves significantly on the story, storytelling and voice acting.

Freakin love Dead Space, its a strong compensation for what RE has become at least. And with silent hill only going downhill sadly, DS looks to become one of the leading survival horror franchises

An action game with fantastic atmosphere is still an action game. Don't get me wrong, I am in no way bashing the game. I'm just saying that it isn't survival horror.

This says a lot about the state the genre is in. When action games are the closest you can get to actual survival horror, you know it's gone down the shitter.

The only current-gen survival horror games that don't seem to suck are Project Zero IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse(Fatal Frame IV in the States) and Siren: Blood Curse. One hasn't been released outside Japan, and the other is a PS3 exclusive meaning I can't play it...

He already stated his opinion as have you, no need to restate what was already said when there is no debate.

the next Silent Hill game looks promising as a re-invention of not only the series, but of Survival Horror as a genre.

Genres are not really opinions.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories does indeed look great, but it's doesn't really change the genre that much. The "I am defenseless and all I can do is run and hide" concept has already been done, and while modifying the monsters based on the player's psychological profile is innovative for sure, it's far from enough to qualify as a "reinvention" of the genre.

Eh, rent one for a night, a walkthrough of Extraction will take you about 6-8 hours. Or emulate it if you have a really fast PC. It's worth it. :]

True, but early players and long-term fans of the genre seem to agree upon the notion that Shattered Memories features one of the best pieces of characters and writing the genre has seen in a long, long time.

Yeah, the game seems awesome. I really want to pick it up but with all the other releases, that's just not happening before Q2 next year.

Assassin's Creed II is the best RPG I've played recently, and that cup of tea I had the other day was the best food I've ever eaten.

Oh, and have you heard about GiantBomb? It's a pretty good book.

Please not another RE5!!!

I hope that they won't fuel much of the budget out of the single player to fuel the multiplayer.

That would suck.

But Assassin's Creed 2 is a RPG.  In all games you play the role of something or someone!

Giant Bomb isn't a book, yet.

@Diamond: You miss the point. Assassin's Creed 2 has RPG elements, tea has elements from food(you consume it) and GiantBomb has elements from books(there's text). Yet, Assassin's Creed 2 isn't an RPG, tea isn't food, and GiantBomb isn't a book.

Similarly, Dead Space has survival horror elements without being a survival horror game. Calling it survival horror is like calling it a platformer because of the Zero-G parts.

Yeah, it's a fantastic game, I'm glad you've enjoyed it. Also, the sequel has just been confirmed, so that's great news. Dead Space is only $20 new, guys, so if any of you haven't tried it yet, you're running out of excuses.

If you haven't played Resident Evil 4 I disrespect your opinion.

If you have played RE4 then you should stop playing video games.

I bought RE4 since it got released and I think it was terrible as a horror game.

The way I look at it, when people think of things differently, that counts as an opinion. You two clearly have different views on the subject... so you have differing opinions. Simple.
