I was right, and you were all wrong. ME1 was always bad.

I feel like I've returned from the wilderness. My clothes drab from bleaching under the desert sun. My mouth cracked and dry. I emerge from the seemingly never ending vastness of the unforgiving wastes and I can't believe my ears. People have put Mass Effect 1 back into their machines to remind/compare and lo... it was bad.
It was always that bad you silly, silly people. You just weren't paying attention. I've rarely seen such texture popping, the Mako was a joke they forgot to fix. But mostly, mostly the lies. Ohhhh the lies! Can no one remember all the stuff they said would be in the game that just never appeared? And my god. Running through the same base time after time after time. Don't even get me started on the AI, in fact I think I'm going to refuse to ever reffer to that as AI ever again. It was more like a two line script. See enemy. Run to enemy. Genius.
It always was that bad. Welcome to the real world.

Mass Effect was bad if you were retarded and insisted on doing the poorly made side quests/gathering. The main story line and gameplay that went with it was a heap of fun.

@F1: You might be right. I can certainly see why you liked it so much. I am though confused again. Just when I thought it was safe for me to give an opinion contrary to the hype-based 'OMFG best game EVAR!' people here, they're all here again! I really seriously don't have a problem if someone likes the game. There was a strong narrative and some of the characterisation was very good. For a game. But I can't see how people can say yes it had all these problems but they still want it to have their babies. All those peoblems but they still enjoyed it? Yeah sure. All those problems but they'd still say it was the best game of the year? Er... well you'd have to explain that one to me.

In short, if you enjoyed it. Great! If you think it was the best game in the universe, well that's your opinion and as you can see, I disagree. Now can I just have my opinion please?

i actually like mass effect more than mass effect 2 so far. i'm not far into 2 but they've made enough shitty changes that i'm still having to get used to it i guess.

basically none of the common complaints against mass effect (framerate, shooting, texture popping, load times, the mako) are really valid on the pc version. that or i played an entirely different game from everyone else somehow.

the weird thing is i played it recently (like last week) for the first time ever, so i wasn't on a non-stop hype train into liking it like most people are with 2. i don't even really enjoy space/sci-fi settings, and the only other bioware game i've played was the intro to dragon age, but something about the game just clicked and i liked it. and now 2 comes along and dicks with all of it for no reason.

ME1 had its fair share of flaws, but it still was a enjoyable experience for me. If it wasn't for you, its your loss.

It has always been great, and it still is. Sure it had it's wide variety of technical problems, but the actual game more than makes up for it.

Please, and this is an appeal to everyone - stop using the "it's good for a game in terms of narration/suspense/plot/characters". Video games in the past three years created more interesting universes than movies in ten. It's plain stupid, if books and movies are so superior in those terms, then why the fuck Meyer's Twilight series are not video games from the start?

Come on. It's the XXI century. We're far way from Contra and Commander Ken times.

The game definitely wasn't as good as it was suppose to be. It was one of the biggest disappointments ever.

Mass Effect 1 was made of total failure, held together only be great potential and trademark Bioware-quality storytelling and character writing.

It is one of the most memorable games I've ever played. I had a really hard time getting into it. When it was over, I was completely in love with it.

I'm sorry for you, if you can't get past the fail to the pure and utter win Mass Effect 1 is.

Mass Effect 2 isn't hamstrung by fail. It's pure and utter win all the way through! Best RPG EVER!

@Ghostiet: I think that's an interesting point. I would have to say that it seems to me that games get a bad deal on this point. There's still all this snobbery about the medium, games aren't art they are childrens toys etc. That seems to reflect on what people judge as the story. Films on the other hand often get a free pass when actually there are big box office films out there that have little story to propel them, certainly much less than some games.

I would also suggest that there is a technical problem with providing storylines in games both in terms of presentation and because of the fact that players like to influence these matters. Bioshock managed to present it's reality and the back story really well I thought. They used alot of visual and audio sources to flesh out the story and really managed to pull it off.

Having said all that though, I end up disagreeing with your plea. I think it is perfectly valid to describe a game as being either good or bad for a game. This I would say is because for the most part films and books (and audio stories) live or die by their storyline when games even today usually live or die by their gameplay. Sure, films these days can get away from them by focusing on action and in those cases I think I would be perfectly entitled to describe one as having a decent plot, for an action movie.

The game really wasn't terrible, it just had a lot of technical problems, and for me personally the plot was damn boring until the last hour and I didn't care about the characters at all. Sure the shooting and the gameplay was clunky but it never held me back from killing enemies so it wasn't a big deal. I don't think the game was as mind blowing and amazing as other people but it wasn't "bad" either, it was a solid game.

No one is going to argue that the game didn't have more than its fair share of problems.  I had a laundry list of grievances for the game including the gawd-awful MAKO, the inventory system, the useless loot you endlessly acquire, the clunky cover system, Thresher-Maw quests, the hunt for gases, minerals, tokens, etc...and, the jarringly obvious texture pop-in on the 360 version.  But, I still enjoyed my time in the game enough to play through it completely 3 times.  I just loved the world, the characters, the design, the story, and the mythology that Bioware created for this franchise.  Mass Effect 1 is a rare game that succeeds in spite of all its numerous failings.

I'm really not sure of the point of this thread since, as many above me have reiterated, no one is saying the game is perfect or anywhere near to perfect.  But, I still found it to be a very enriching experience.

Usually I don't watch people play games, but that's actually a game where it's funner to watch than play.

@Crash_Happy: Um, WTH are you talking about? The same game as I'm thinking of? With the 94 on Metacritic? The one that is my #5 game of all time? That one. No, its still you dude.
