So I finally gave in... But it's ok.

The 'Avatar' movie may be old news at this point, but it's still being shown in 3D at the cinemas nationwide so I'm typing about it. It's my blog, and to quote a certain Eric Cartman:"I don't care! I'll do what I want!"

Onto the blog part.

So I bought some cinema vouchers for my mum on her birthday not long ago and she'd got it into her silly little head that she wanted to go see 'The Avatar'

I was pretty much dreading going the whole trip to the cinemaplex.

I mean, for me, the whole idea that while the main character was off siding with the Navvi while his body was back at base camp, and could easily be unplugged at the Human bad guys discretion, seriously put a sour note in my tune for this movie. A dent in my mental paint work you could also say.
Thanks to Giantbombs' quicklook that is. How were they to know anything right?

My mum was looking forward to it a lot, so since I bought her the gift I was kind of resigned to go with. Irony's a bitch right?

WRONG!

While the movie is extremely predictable, it's kind of a fun ride.

Anyway, Predictability aside it turns out to be pretty fun.

The 3D's pretty sweet and totally not in your face. Some of it made my eyes feel boseyed when I looked directly at what was been 3D-ised on the screen but overall it was done very well.

And while I think the story couldn't have been more contrived from pre-owned merchandise, *cough* Fern gully *cough* Dances with Wolves *cough*.
It tells this aged story with a different environment and some great realistic tech demoed cut scenes. All leading to a following of people all knowing but not caring that it's crappy but for the same reason very, very good.

Oops! Did I just type "Tech demoed cut scenes"? I meant.... Eeeeerm... Nevermind! Hey look at the shiny penny! (Throws it away.) Go get the shiny penny! Go on! Where's the shiny penny?!
(Shouts after the person running excitedly for the shiny penny.) And forget I ever mentioned anything! (Personally runs in the opposite direction) Now where's my PR guy got to?!

Ah well... At the end of the day it's a must buy even if you hate it. If only to remind you of how good crappy movies can be. :-)

Go check it out!

I know what you mean.  When I went I wasn't expecting much, I wanted to see it just because I knew I'd have to eventually.  I went with some friends who had seen it before and both really loved it.  One of them brought their boyfriend who, like me, wasn't expecting much, also I'll add that was the first day I met him.  After the movie I reluctantly admitted that I enjoyed it, not for the story or the acting, but because there were some really cool things done there that made it enjoyable to watch.  My friend's boyfriend didn't enjoy it at all, in fact to quote him, "I can't think of a single redeeming quality..."  At one point during the night I made a sarcastic comment about "at least I liked Avatar" and then it got awkward and silent as he looked at me with murder-eyes.

AND that is the story of how I made sure that my good friend's boyfriend hates me. :P

@HatKing: Cool story.

You know, cows had a desease a few years back, here in the UK and some of europe, called foot and mouth desease. Maybe you should go catch it, lol.

Naaa... Just playing, My brothers girlfriend hates me for a similar reason. That and I wouldn't go out with her when we went to high school in the same grade/year together.

She had a very bad case of  "face for radio-itis", and as much as I try I can't really turn her around to liking me.

Plus, I don't really have the money to pay for her plastic surgery, so it's a kick in the ass for me from both sides, because if she marries my brother I have to continue to look at her. ;-p

I'm pretty sure it's just titled "Avatar." Not "The Avatar."

The whole "(action sequence)" things in your blog put me off. That and "The Avatar".

I don't understand why people excuse avatar for sucking because "the effects were a blast" but they don't extend that to the likes of Transformers 2.

Both movies sucked.

I saw Avatar in Imax 3D. Hated the actual movie (plot, etc.) but the first scene when Jake is being woken up on the ship blew me away. The special effects look awesome, enough to warrant the incredibly long and boring plot.

I'm 100% sure you can't because the movie's title is "Avatar" as I am that you can't use a comma before the word and numbnuts.  If what you used as an example held true in every case, which it certainly does not, then the sentence "I would like some the Coke please" wouldn't sound moronic.  It does.

I think it was quite clear that I was neither passive nor aggressive, I was initially just agreeing with Delta_Ass.  I also pointed out that you mispelled the name of the alien humanoids, which you managed to miss or ignore (depending on whether I assume blindness or passive aggression).

@SeriouslyNow:
Well I made it clear by the end of my blog, I find the movie disinterestingly interesting, so I don't really care how to spell Na'avi/Navvi.
Besides in an unrelated but similar matter, the guys who made star trek called Spocks' mother Ta'pal. The same sound comes out of anybody's mouth even if it's spelt like this: Tapal.
But because they wanted it to look mystical the unneccesary grammer was added.

James Cameron did this exact same thing when naming his little blue cat people with a title.

At the end of the day though, people knew as soon they'd read my version of the word: "Navvi" exactly what it meant and to be honest I think it's hilarious that as blindingly obvious as I'd made my disinterested interest in this movie, you couldn't seem to tell. I apologise if this has offended you but you seem a bit tight strung. So to again, in the hopes of alleiviating any further tension I will again apologise.
I'm sorry...

I was a little late to see it too.  Granted, I saw it like a month ago, but yeah.  It was pretty cool.  I don't know if I'll ever see it again, but I'm glad I caught it before it left theaters.

I saw it the first weekend, and while I didn't have my mind blown like my friends, I enjoyed the film a ton. It's a well-made popcorn flick, with stellar, state-of-the-art CGI and 3D effects.  Every time I think about the story however, I lose interest in the world of Pandora. The script & plot both left a ton to be desired. I think I had said this before in another thread, but I thought that District 9 did something similar, but cheaper & better.

Still, I think it's an important film and one that everyone should watch, if only to see what the hype is all about.

What the hell is important about it? It has CGI? Who cares? So does Transformers 2 and no one treats it like they treat Avatar.

Every time someone excuses this movie because it has "good effects", I die a little inside. But to call it important? Are you high?

The movie uses tech that no movie before it has.  The facial technology will most likely change the industry.  Speilberg, Lucas, etc. have already expressed a real interest in using what Cameron collaborated with the developers to create for the film.  Besides all of that, it's the biggest movie of all time.  It's important in that way at least.

It's definitely not worth getting so worked up when somebody likes it though.

I'm not excusing it just because it has "good effects". Transformers 2 had "good effects", yet it was the biggest piece of shit I saw last year. There's a difference between choppy, highly-stylized metal-on-metal action that you can never see because the cinematographer can't keep the damn camera straight, and thrilling, state-of-the-art CGI that lets the viewer take in the sights of a wholly imaginary world.

The film, needless to say, is a great popcorn flick and Cameron knows how to film an action scene, so you aren't really disappointed when crap starts blowing up (in a world that has no oxygen...weird).

Also I called it important mostly because it's the biggest movie of all time now. The people have designated it as an important film, a cultural event, so you are kind of obligated to see the film now.

I liked it.  Well the story kind sucked, but  man it looks good.  It's like having sex with your eyeballs.
