Video gaming industry and recession- No PlayStation 4

Based on a video interview with Sony Europe president David Reeves  the video game business is not recession proof, but there is no real visible slow-down.

he also noted that they have loads of personnel that are developing games and this is an investment which SCEE will not scale down at all. Here also added that he is not even sure if a PS4 is being considered, stating that he has no knowledge of it at all and is not sure if it is planned.

In the interview with Dutch economics program RTL Z, Sony Europe president David Reeves speaks about the economic crisis and how it relates to the video game industry in Europe.

Reeves is quick to state that the industry is not recession proof, but that there is no notable impact . He posits that consumers are putting the recession to the back of their minds over Christmas, or that they are choosing to stay at home more and, as a result, are spending money on home-based entertainments, such as video games.

Reeves also states that within Sony Computer Entertainment Europe there will be no personnel or development cutbacks. "We don't have many personnel to cut back.

Half our personnel are in the development of the games. That's an investment. We're not scaling down at all." Good news for first party developers; it looks like their jobs (and the games they are developing) are relatively safe.

Uh... How would that help them? Switch from a well known, established brand to something entirely new and then be forced to market the hell out of it just to get the consumer recognition? Yeah, that sounds like a way better idea than just calling it the PlayStation 4 and thus ensuring at least x number of sales.

How many people do you think didn't buy the Playstation 3 as a Bluray player because of its connotation to games?
Why do you think Nintendo calls its system "Wii" and not "Nintendo Wii" mainly?

They aren't marketing to us solely anymore, that's why. We will recognize, not the brand alone, but the developers and the games. The new buyers will recognize the name. Does the name "Playstation" really sound like a multimedia system? Not anymore, because there's already been 2 that were solely for games.

If Sony wants to educate consumers about all of the functionality of the PlayStation 3, they need to spend marketing doing that. The cost to do that would be far cheaper than re-establishing brand recognition with ALL of their customers.

And if a catchy name is what it takes, I don't think the best idea would be to cut PlayStation out of the title, but rather give it a gimmicky name like "PlayStation Experience" or something along those lines. You still retain the PlayStation name, like Nintendo did with the Wii, but give it an easily identifiable name for consumers.

You're wrong, because even though the systems are trying to diversify, the Playstation brand is about gaming. All the bonuses like Blu-ray are there just to sweeten the deal. Sony has a ton of standalone Blu-ray players in which they make revenue and profit, whereas the Playstation's main purpose is to be their gaming system.

Okay, but the fact that a higher up has said, and I assume he isn't lying, that a PS4 hasn't been planned leads me to believe they're dropping the fucking brand. Am I the only one that caught that? Also, give it time. All these things are being marketed as multimedia devices now, "all-in-one" packages. The simple fact is that a person that doesn't play games will not buy a Playstation 3, and considering that Sony pushed the Playstation 3 for most of 2007 as the cheapest, best-bang-for-your-buck-Bluray player and have had to change gears has proven that people won't buy a PS3 unless they plan to use it for games. The PS3 is a game console. Sony wants it to be more. Therefore, I have come to the assumption that they will change the brand name in order to expand their horizons.

It isn't about education. This is shown by the fact that Soulja Boy had a #1 recording. Also, Nintendo didn't retain anything with Wii. It is Wii. Not GameWii. Not Nintendo Entertainment Wii. It's not even Nintendo Wii. It is just Wii. Sony is Playstation, or Sony Playstation. Both connote games. Wii connotes family friendly fun. Playstation connotes what the first two connoted, which is a station for playing. They have been marketing it as more. That is why I think they'll drop the brand.

Say I'm wrong and I'll just say why I think I'm right, but a quick look at the NPD numbers shows that the people that have changed their brand names are OWNING, while the people that havent are either STAGNATING or FALLING BEHIND. Simple?

kook. :P

There will be a PS4, the tech leap woll be smaller and as many gimmicks will be added in to attract casual consumers wanting a decent media center that they can play games on. Of course that is what the PS3 was meant to be.

that is not possible , as long as companies like Microsoft only rely on current generation consoles , their research team along with many other institutions remain inactive which is not good for profit  .

If that happens then it will be very good for all consumers simply because when one and only one console rules the market , the quality of  games improves drastically

I'm not arguing any points, just pointing out a technicality.

"Playstation" does not connote gaming.  It does, however, almost literally denote gaming.  What it connotes is more subjective; impressions of fun, feelings of nostalgia, maybe.  Or, if you're an Xbox fanboy, a strong sense of hatred.

That's a load of Rubbish, Phil Harrison originally left the company because they were about to begin Development on the next console. They are way into the development of the console it's just a matter of when it will be released.

I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that only one system means "drastically better games". As far as I'm aware only one system means drastically worse games.

The current Sony vs. XBOX competition is only leading to even more high quality games than you could hope for. Plus they are constantly improving what they have to get a step ahead of competition. It's an undeniably good thing for owners of either platform.

However look at Nintendo, they're currently sitting in a new market of their own where the money is raking in and they don't specifically have to make any games.

Having more than one system on the market will always be a good thing and if Sony do go (which they won't) then you will rue it eventually.

And of course there is a system in development. Are Sony really going to come out and say "yes, the PS4 is in development, it will do blah blah blah, cost blah blah blah and is expected in blah blah blah". What else is he going to say? "No comment"? It's a television interview. Saying there are "no plans" is the easiest way out of the question.

competition will always exist , not merely between consoles but between games themselves , when MGS 5 and splinter cell 5 and hitman 5 all try to be the best in stealth action genre then the quality will improve inevitably  .

Also when there is only and only one console all the games would have their ultimate visual quality since literally all of them could be called exclusive and thus would use the ultimate power of console for the sake of superior quality

The Wii is not successful because it dropped the Nintendo brand. If anything, the Nintendo brand helped it because Nintendo has been tied to that "For Christmas you get your kid a Nintendo thing" way of thinking for parents. Nintendo became the name for video games for lots of families. The success of the Wii is the tapping into the casual market, getting people who don't want to memorize all these tricky buttons to play a game like Halo or Street Fighter, but wouldn't mind playing Wii Golf or Mario Party 8 with their kids. That's why the Wii is a success, not dropping the Nintendo label (which it never really did). Feel free to show me these other companies doing great because they dropped their existing label.

Dropping an existing brand name can work, if it has become stagnant and has a negative connotation. However, dropping the Playstation name to compete for an audience they aren't in a position to go after is a fucking awful idea.

It's hard to sell a game console made my a game manufacturer to people that don't like game consoles. To sell the Wii, Nintendo branded it with Wii and changed the controller. Now, it doesn't have a game manufacturer behind it or a controller that resembles a previous controller. Nintendo started fresh with it. It isn't called the Nintendo Wii in the commercials. It just says "Wii" when the little i's bow.
