Top 10 Wii U games if you don't like platformers

The Wii U is done.

If you have a pretty narrow interest in video games, you could probably declare any console "done" as soon as the next one is announced, but then they somehow end up getting a steady stream of games from Japan. Even the Vita, which Sony declared a legacy platform back in 2015 has an ongoing print magazine, if you can believe that!

Apart from a few indie shovelware titles and ports of indie games found elsewhere, the Wii U is absolutely done. It's over!

That being said, I did have some fun times with the Wii U, so I thought I'd put together a list of my Top 10 Wii U games. It might look a little different from what you might expect, because I don't like platformers. I guess it's a stable of growing up to retro games that you have to be really into the zillions of platformers that came out in the 80's and 90's, but they just never did anything for me, so this means no Mario platformers or even Super Mario Maker on this list.

With that in mind, let's move onto the list and also please, please enjoy this soothing melody and farewell song to the Wii U.

List items

  • Bayonetta 2 wasn't gonna happen if Nintendo hadn't stepped in and I'm glad they did, because this is character action excellence.

  • Splatoon went from being a "what the fuck is this baby game?!" from its initial reveal to being one of the best and most unique shooters ever created. With style and flair, Splatoon feels like a Dreamcast game. It has that "SEGA feel" which can't quite be described, but is the hallmark of every great game ever made in the last 30 years.

  • The best Zelda game ever created. Yes, I'm serious. I've given other Zelda games a fair shake and they just take too long to get going. The limited roster, compared to other musou games, might feel a little lacking at first, but every character feels GREAT to play. It's also a great way to get a quick summary of the other Zelda games, without having to spend hours talking to owls, trudging through dumb dungeons just to get a boomerang or suffer dull sailing. Fast and fun action!

  • Some say that your favorite Mario Kart is your first one, but this one is probably my favorite. It looks great, it plays great and it, surprisingly, has a pretty great online component as well (for a Nintendo game). For their next Mario Kart, I hope they drop the Mario moniker, because the roster simply doesn't feel as diverse as Sonic's All-Star Racing, with too many plumbers, princesses and babies. The only thing they could come up with are metal versions of existing characters? Come on! Add Star Fox, Little Mac, Ashley the Witch and Sami from Advance Wars already! Nintendo Kart! Think about it!

  • If you like big JRPGs, this is probably one of the biggest ones of the generation. Despite the Wii U's limited horsepower, compared to its competitors, Monolith and Nintendo have managed to create a game that is both visually impressive and just massive in scope.

  • The industrious nature of the Japanese Idol culture is really shown off in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. Despite the heavy Western censorship, it still feels like you get a look into just how seriously they take their talent show careers. There's a bigger conversation to be had if they might actually be the forerunners of what future jobs look like, as robots take over all our regular, menial tasks and we all just have to make money by working in the entertainment industry, but let's save that for another time.

  • Nintendo didn't seem up for making a new F-Zero game, so Shin'en Multimedia did it for them. A great game at a great speed.

  • It might be a multiplatform game, but the Nintendo extras added to this version are great. I will never get tired of watching Heihachi looking deadly serious while wearing a Mario costume.

  • Massively unintuitive when you first start playing, but once you "get it" it becomes really good. The style and humor is also fantastic and I think it's a game you will love if you give it a chance.

  • Fatal Frame is all about the Camera Obscura and for as useless as the Wii U tablet ended up becoming, it's a perfect fit for this game. Like Tokyo Mirage Sessions, this was also a victim of the Western censorship, but the new Samus and Zelda costumes actually turned out to be a cool improvement over the lingerie of the Japanese version. If you like spooks, this is the one and only game to get on the Wii U.
