The are plenty of bounties of the "participation award" variety. You can knock those out without worrying about your performance too much, and it'll let you get your feet wet.
I recommend going with a high volume weapon when you are starting out, like an autorifle. Things like scout rifles and hand cannons work fine, but early on your best bet will be to put rounds on something scary. Switch to something like that if you are using more precision type weapons in PvP.
The first available match type is a control point match, meaning it is easier for newer players to know where to go. Stick with teammates, and concentrate more on objectives than just straight gunslinging. If you are in the right place at the right time the very worst you can be is an extra body for them to shoot at, meaning your teammates have a better chance of getting the kill. Staying back on defense in a good place to either hold a point or ambush someone who comes to cap it isn't a bad idea either.
Normal PvP balances for your gear and flattens out the level bonuses, but obviously the more you have unlocked the more tools you have. You don't need to go there right away.
The label says what they do. Some are grimoires, some are unlocks of emblems, and some are shaders, aka things that make all your gear color coordinated.
It's really one of those weird things where before you get one you think "well I mean they seem cool, but really would I get that much use out of it", and then when you get one you are angry it took you so long.
