Best of 2010

These are my picks for Top 10 of 2010. Very little justification will be provided, so suffice it to say, I enjoyed these games a lot.

List items

  • It was a toss-up as to which game is my number one, this or Fallout: New Vegas. While F:NV is presumed to have continued support throughout 2011, Mass Effect 2 has already had a ton of support, and is not a bug-ridden mess of a game. From the base game throughout all the DLC (Hammerhead..... thing aside) this game oozes quality.

  • Fallout: New Vegas, despite it's myriad issues, has sucked me in to the tune of 80 hours across a couple characters. Yes it has issues, however this did not deter me from not only finishing the game, but finishing it multiple times in order to S-rank it. If this game is not the definition of "a diamond in the rough" then I don't know what is.

  • I gave up on this game for a long while; this sort of character action usually appeals to me up to a point, then stops being fun. This has happened with every single iteration of Devil May Cry, for example. However I finished it recently after dropping the difficulty to Easy and had a blast. Platinum Games has agreed one more game with Sega, and if the rumours are accurate and that it is a sequel, I really hope that this is the game to get it.

  • Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, apart from having a long name, has one of the most intricately structured stories I've read in a game. I replayed this game multiple times mainly to hear the music, but to experience the final showdown in one of the most frustrating (for the characters) boss fights in history.

  • I finished this game in 3 hours and I could not be happier with the length. This game did exactly what it set out to do, provide a completely crazy-go-nuts game with guns and robots and explosions. It excelled at doing this.

  • It's not an opinion I've seen elsewhere, but I consider this a survival-horror platformer. You play as a protagonist with an ambiguous goal, not knowing what lies in the darkness, but you press on in the hopes of finding what you seek.

  • This is another game that sucked me wholly into its world. Yeah it wasn't quite what early previews made it out to be, but it is still a solid action horror game, with tight gunplay and impressive light and shadow effects. I cannot wait for a sequel which further explores the darkness in Alan.

  • This game introduced a very interesting mechanic, in that potentially could shoot all your money away. It was interesting, but didn't really affect my playthrough much. What did have an impact was the need to manually pump to charge the torch, the need to manually equip a gas mask (and maintain it) and the need to be careful with the scarce ammo you do have.

  • I lost a month of my life to this game.

  • I couldn't not put this game on my list. I was desperate for a UK release so badly that I imported the Asian PS3 version which has English voice and nothing else. However in October a miracle happened and it was released here for the Xbox 360.
