Just build a gaming PC. You havent raised any decent counter-points. Frankly I get fed up of people who can't cope with the mildest criticism and insist that everyone be as excited as they are. They are critics its literally their job to criticise not advertise. The new generation of consoles is boring, and the launch titles are boring. That might change sometime next year as developers start making use of the newer hardware properly but the launch is the imminent thing people are talking about, and theres very little value in buying these new consoles in 2020.

I just updated the OP. If you read that it’s hopefully more clear that is not what I’m advocating for at all.

First of all, it's absolutely fine. I do not feel like you are being a jerk at all. I don't know if I seem like I have thin skin here, but I try my best to listen to people's arguments and see how they line up with my own. If I disagree I'm not afraid to say so, but it does not bother me if people don't agree. If I did, I would just have shut this down immediately.

Which kinda goes nicely into the next point. As I wrote a couple of posts above, the OP clearly didn't communicate well enough what I actually meant. I cut my ending short because it was getting so damn long already, but it's pretty clear that was not the right call and that's on me. So I'm going to add an edit to clear some things up.

I don't think having more opinions and viewpoints in a discussion is the same as asking for more excitement, but I guess in some ways we end up moving into more of a philosophical debate here. Like I have said earlier hours upon hours of the same dismissive attitudes towards the new consoles even when news are good so to speak (like when the prices were actually much lower than GBs general sentiments) is just not interesting to listen to. At least for me.

And to go into your two specific examples:

The discussion with Thoughshed isn't actually about diffent SKUs on the new consoles. It is very specifically about the very first thing in the OP, what Jeff said in the Hotspot in regards to his problems with being able to choose between performance and graphics. And it seems like we simply heard two different things, because I do not hear Jeff mention SKUs there at all. It was honestly a pretty silly discussion, because how are you going to agree on what a person says, when you hear two different things? That is why I tried to shut it down.

And I asked PeteSix0 if we was serious, simply because I felt like he might be trolling. After having just made multiple long posts of explanation he asked for more, without being clear in his request. But even then, in the very same post, l tried to give him exactly what he asked for and explained myself as clearly as I could.

So I still don't see how I'm shooting down other people's well articulated opinions. Disagreeing sure, but I try not to be an ass about it.

I get your general point though and you break it down well. I don't agree with everything, but you made it clearer where some of the confusing comes from. Thank you for that.

Why do you need them to be excited? I legitimately don't get this.

Maybe look for something deeper than validation of your consumer choices.

That is really not my argument at all. You don’t see my calling for more excitement anywhere in the OP or in the replies. But at this point I should probably just add an edit to the OP, because I clearly did not explain what I meant well enough.

I totally agree with @navster15:

@cikame: The reasons people are buying the new consoles are the same reasons why we’re seeing incredible demand for the nvidia 3000 series graphics cards. Namely, they allow our games to look and play better. Why can’t it just be that?

I've said this in several threads already, but why do I need a reason to buy a new console other than "my games will run better"? It works for NVidia and Intel every year.

I hope this is the case. I think PS4 Pro showed us this may not always be true. Bloodborne saw no benefit, among other first-party games. I started Until Dawn and could not believe on my PS4 Pro it runs at 20fps. It's insane. I looked it up and I see old messages from years ago of people hoping for a Pro patch. Unlike PC, devs need to do extra work to scale up to new console hardware and few want to do it. Not to mention it takes a long time. I think we won't see patches for Tsushima and TLOU2 until next summer (a year after each game's release).

Don’t want to derail the thread here, have you seen the Xbox Series X videos that came out today? There seems to be a lot of great promise in regards to last gen games running a lot better on the new consoles, even unoptimized. Load times are being shorted by 60-75% in a lot of cases and frame rates are more stable.

I'm not remotely "primarily a PC gamer" and still play damn near everything that isn't explicitly a mouse-and-keyboard game on console.

Also, no, this isn't like every other console launch. It's easily the barest collective launch lineup we've ever seen. There's one remake of a 12-year-old game, one last-gen port, and...?

For Xbox sure, I agree. But I really don’t think that’s true for Playstation.

PS4 had 3 next gen exclusive launch games:

  • Killzone: Shadowfall
  • Knack
  • Resogun (digital only).

PS5 also has 3 next gen exclusive launch games:

  • Demon’s Souls
  • Godfall
  • Destruction: All Stars

And besides that it has Miles Morales, the next version of the second best selling PS4 game of all time and Sackboy: A big adventure. Sure these games are coming to PS4, but they are two Sony exclusives develop directly for the new console and releasing day and date with it. PS4 didn’t have anything of that sort.

And yeah Demon’s Souls is a remake of a 12 year old game, but it’s also the first game in a very beloved franchise, that a lot of people still haven’t played. It’s highly acclaimed, even winning Gamespots GOTY back in 2009 and in terms of graphics it seems to be, by far the best looking launch game on any of the consoles. It’s probably going to be one of the best launch games ever on a Playstation, certainly stronger than anything on PS3 or PS4.

So I personally think the launch lineup looks stronger than on PS4. And even with that shitty lineup PS4 still did great at launch.

@dragon_puncher: And we, and they, have discussed all your points ad nauseum.

Again, I am not seeing anything beyond you wanting them besides "bringing different viewpoints to the table" which gets back to my original statement about friend simulators and echo chambers. They are not responsible for regurgitating your opinions to you. All of those points regarding PC prices and 4k tv availability and launch lineups and so and so were addressed and they came to different conclusions than you did. We've continued to discuss those points in this very thread and you say things like how "Jeff is a lost cause" or "(that) is another discussion"

Optimally you should learn how to read and appreciate opinions that aren't your own. That is a key part of getting out of the echo chamber. If you can't do that then you should probably find a media outlet that better fits your world views instead of requiring ones that don't to conform and "play devil's advocate" until they have the "right" response to something.

I feel like you are not reading me here. I have repeatedly said that I don’t expect them to change their opinion and that I don’t just want their opinion to match my own. I’m saying that the actual discussion isn’t interesting because it’s the same every time echoed across three podcasts. It is not about having the “right” respons, something you have certainly not seen me argue for in this thread, it’s about the discussion just going in a tiring circle because everybody in the crew has collective taken the stance “I don’t see why people would buy these things”.

If you still refuse to acknowledge this as my stance, I’ll end up not thinking you are arguing in good faith. It’s quite frankly the direct opposite of any form of echo chamber. And just to make it clear, I never said any of the crews opinions were wrong or invalid, they are certainly a good part of the discussion. The only things I went against was stuff based on a false premise like Brad with the 4K TVs. I just said I wanted a counterpoint.

Still waiting for the places where I’m condesending and saying valid opinions are off topic.

I don’t think we are going to agree here since we apperantly hear completely different things. Listen to it again and tell where he mentions different next gen SKUs in relation to the graphics settings and then we can talk. Because I’m not hearing it.

Its right there in the exact same point he was making. You're just putting your fingers in your ears for 3 pages now. Wasting everyone time and ignoring their posts. Cool move.

Considering I have been answering I don’t know how many posts here at this point, I’m hardly ignoring people. And I’m sorry dude, but I listened to it again and I just don’t hear him mentioning different SKUs. Maybe we are talking about different places in the podcast here, I don’t know. It’s not really that important in the grand scheme of things.

@dragon_puncher: Maybe I am just a bit slow but I have been reading this thread since pretty much near the start and STILL don't know what your point is beyond "they should argue my viewpoint too" and a LOT of selective quoting and weirdly condescending "approval" of what various folk in this thread have said.

Maybe you could help some of us out by actually articulating your point? Because I am not seeing much beyond my original "we are all fucked up by our friend simulators and echo chambers" point.

Plenty of folk (that you have actively ignored or told are off topic) are willing to engage in a discussion about this. And I for one am getting tired of your dismissive attitude toward people trying to engage in conversation with you and encourage you to argue your own points instead of getting annoyed that Rorie isn't brought on every podcast to read from a prepared script (see what I did there?).

I honestly don’t know how I can make it any clearer. For me interesting discussion is about bringing different viewpoints to the table. GB has not been doing that in their discussion of next gen consoles, IMO. Through hours of content over months they have consistently brought a very dismissive attitude, that they all agree on without any counter. That is tiring for me. Especially since there are, like I tried to outline in the OP, plenty of valid reasons to maybe look a bit beyond that dismissive stance. And considering next gen launches are some of the biggest events in the industry, I think it deserves some decent discussion.

People might not think those reasons are valid or like their discussions and that is fine, but this is my argument.

But if you are going to call me both condescending and say I ignore people and call others opinions off topic, then show me where?? I will admit that I can’t reply to everything, but I have really been trying my best here (And no, I honestly don’t understand that Rorie comment at all. And that is not me trying to be a dick).

@xanadu: That's not what I'm complaining about dude. If you took the time to read what I wrote you would know this.

And I don't know how long you have been around here, but they definitely haven't always had a PC first mindset. When the site started they were gaming mostly on 360 and PC was primarily religated to crazy videos like Random PC game.

I don't know if I'm bothered by it, but I'm not convinced MS can actually get these huge Netflix numbers out of Game Pass, that it seems like they are going for.

Most people only buy 1-2 AAA games a year, are you going to get these people to sign up to pay $15 dollars each month? I'm not sure about that.

But I also think that MS' plan is to get as many people inside the door now as possible and then raise the price once they are fully in the ecosystem. If they want this to be there main stream of revenue, then I can't see how that's possible with all they are investing at the current price. They would probably need at least 50 millions subscribers, considering how hard it has been for Netflix to be profitable.
