Full disclosure, I have owned the following systems; Sega Genesis, N-64, PS2, X-box, Gamecube, X-Box 360. Use that knowledge to invalidate my argument if you like.
   

The PSN outage and security breach has kicked off another skirmish in the fanboy wars, and I could not be more disappointed in the lot of you. 
To PS3 owners let me say first that I am not my X-Box, you are not your PS3. Take a moment to let that sink in...........got it? Good. Now, why then are you defending Sony so vigorously? You don't owe them anything, you bought that expensive and overly impressive piece of hardware back when most of your peers saved a hundred bucks and got a 360. The only plus you had was free online access and now they have the balls to charge you for that too and it breaks? Fuck them, you should be pissed off at them, not at some dickhead trying to start a flame war. 

And to my Microsoft fanboy friends, stop being so giddy about this. The PSN security breach does not "cancel out" the RROD cluster-fuck. That still happened, our consoles broke, remember? This did not somehow undo that, there was no time vortex created, I have seen no flying DeLoreans, both of these issues where horribly shitty in their own right. How does an outage of the PSN help anybody? Do I get a free month on XBL now? Is there some kind of loyalty prize for kicking Sony while they are down? Because if there is, then I'll get in on it, sure; if not then what the fuck is the point?
 
Fanboys, let me tell you a little secret......you want the other console to do well. I know! That sounds fucking crazy, right! Here's why, competition. If either Sony or Microsoft starts slipping to far behind then the lead company has no incentive to innovate. I remember back when Sony launched the PS3, they had games that did not excite me, a big price tag and a fucking god awful marketing campaign. So I got a 360 and the PS3 floundered. Then, a couple years ago Sony actually started making really awesome games and had brand new, good, funny commercials (Kevin Butler did more to restore that companies image than any of their real executives ever could). Now Microsoft has to get of their asses and build some awesome shit if they want to stay competitive, and I am looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Moral of the story, never let a company think that it has your undying loyalty, remember that you are a customer dammit, and they need to work for your money.

I haven't been hugely active on the forums over the past few weeks but fanboyism has never been a real problem here in the past. Has there been some massive wave of fanboyism hitting the forums in recent days that I haven't noticed?

Seriously? Fuck. Back in the day I spent a lot of time on Gamespot and when I left that site one of the things I was happiest to leave behind were the console warriors there. This isn't an anti-Gamespot thing but every site has it's problems and I believe the biggest problem the Gamespot community had was the fanboyism. Our community has had its fair share of bumps in the road, I know arguments can often get heated in the forums and I believe there is room for the positives and negatives of each console, but I believed we were at least above the kind of pointless, inane arguments of the console wars. "

Loyalty to any company that you do not have a personal connection with (ie. friends, family, supply chain type relationship) is pretty stupid.  I get if your parents/siblings work for Microsoft or Sony or if you run a company that works very closely with either company then you have an obligation to be loyal to that company, but just owning a product or products made by a company is no reason to adamantly defend a company at every turn.  That is the very definition of fanboyism imho, and it's just got to stop.  It doesn't benefit yourself or anyone else.  No one says that you have to enjoy a console because you own it, and you don't have to dislike a console because you don't own it.  You can be critical of companies that you buy products from, and in fact, those are the only companies that you should really be critical of. 

totally agree. But I've mostly seen people pissed off with Sony not notifying people earlier which is understandable.I'll be the first to admit I am partial to the PS3 just because the games appeal to me more, but fuck man... I'm pissed off.

You hate fanboyism yet write a thread that is entices fanboys... fyi i bought the 360 cus microsoft is known for making great software versus you know japan which is known to be a lil lacking in that department. also, the 360 just seems like a no brainer considering the fact it had the haloz. i bought mine a year after launch so I could have easily plopped down some extra cash to get a ps3. another note a lot of people who got RRoD had a common enemy - overheating from dust bunnies. apparently, quite a few people dont bother to place their 360 2 feet or more from the wall to provide good airflow. i had one of the first 360s and it lasted me pretty much forever (i sold it and bought a new one when the pro price drop happened).. just sayin'

i personally do not laugh about the psn problems, its really sad if you think about the fact when xbl goes down its back up in hours, or at most a day or two... so, i feel your pain psn users, of course you dont pay for your shit most of the time so i also understand when sony says we'll fix it tomorrow or next week, cus our users are poor tarts, who bought our system and ended up payin the price difference for 2 years of internet service, and got a cheap 1x blu ray in return... hahaha xD its ok i got haloz and awesome dlc and software and you guys got RATCHET AND CLANK...

Well as an owner of both consoles, I'm not overly pissed at Sony because it's not entirely their fault. Sure it's their fault in some regards, they could have had better security, but hackers are a wily bunch, they can be a bitch to deal with. Most of the blame lays with them.
