SoCal Regionals 2015 (October 9th-11th) Preview + Capcom Pro Tour October & EVO moment 37 interview!

It's finally here, SoCal Regionals, for real this time!

SoCal Regionals 2015 Preview

No Caption Provided

We live in a post-EVO 2015 world! And yet the road to December's Capcom Cup continues. SCR 2015 was originally slated for May (before EVO 2015) but due to venue issues it's been bumped to October. Its premier event status for the Capcom Pro Tour is still active so its USFIV tournament still has a spot in the Capcom Cup for its winner, as well as Capcom Cup seeding points and $15,000 bonus for the top 8.

SoCal Regionals is run by one of the original world class fighting game players Alex Valle and his production company/group, Level|Up Series. They are also known for Wednesday Night Fights, the primary West Coast fighting game weekly, which just yesterday announced its new venue at the brand new eSports Arena in Santa Ana, California.

Wednesday Nights is scheduled to return on October 21st. So it's a very busy month for Valle and Level|Up!

News

Kotaku interviews Daigo Umehara, Justin Wong and Seth Killian about EVO moment 37

"I wanted to show Justin that this wasn't going to be an ordinary fight."

A well put together video by Kotaku (minus them mistaking Daigo for Raoh). I especially like the description of their mindsets during the match.

Full list of Street Fighter V reveals since EVO 2015

The King of Fighters XIV was unveiled and everyone hates its graphics

An extremely early version of KOFXIV was shown at TGS and it hasn't gone down well! I will reserve judgement of their decision to drop their graphical style for polygons until a version much closer to release is shown. Also I hope the online is good, or just better than XIII. May give this a try myself when it releases.

Thanks for reading and enjoy watching!

I'm glad to finally get this blog up, it's been delayed several times, but now that it's up I'm going to be watching as much fighting game events as I can. Hope you will too!

@hassun: @starvinggamer:

The Invasion Boss this week is Corrupted Shinnok, and he's guaranteed to be the next DLC character, just look at this top tier DLC combo:

Real talk: It's actually a pretty fun puzzle to solve though I've only won once thus far, I've gotten it below 6 seconds like a dozen times or so; so eh good enough.

@starvinggamer: Well that specific thing only happened once, I've had decent luck with Tanya; also I learned you could combo air to air kicks into X-Ray though it's not easy to do (total accident):

If you want to watch Snake Eyez play FT10 sets against Machaboo, Eita and Nemo then you're in luck!

Snake brought out his E Ryu to fight Eita.

They played some salty runbacks afterwards.

-

In other news, the brackets for the Ultra Hyakkishu Cup (upcoming Japanese CPT premier tournament) have been revealed and Shoryuken was kind enough to translate them. As expected from a Japanese major, it's a 128-player nightmare!

In other other news, Poongko is getting on that hard counter Bees in my hair train.

@l1ghtn1n: Oh, man... I hope it isn't Gief...

Could be a redisign of Hakan? Skin tone matches and Hakan had studs before.

Hopefully it's a new character. Maybe related to Gief.

I thought Ono was trolling as usual but then I saw this: http://shoryuken.com/2015/10/01/street-fighter-v-character-announcement-planned-for-russias-igromir-expo-this-weekend/

Chances of it being Gief have just increased by about 80%

Speaking of Zangief, Snake Eyez is still hard at work training in Japan and was a guest on Yubiken today: http://www.twitch.tv/yubiken/profile

He played Kawaguchi (Rose), Dashio (Seth), Hagejin (Zangief), R (Boxer) and Santarou (Sagat).

Results:

vs Kawaguchi: 3-1 Kawaguchi, 3-1 Snake, 3-2 Snake

vs Dashio: 3-2 Dashio, 3-0 Dashio Highlights: 1, 2, 3

vs Hagejin: 5-2 Hagejin Highlights: 1, 2

vs R: 2-0 Snake

vs Santarou: 2-1 Snake

If I'm being honest I have to admit that Dhalsim doesn't really interest me much either. I'm hoping there will be another zoning/space controlling character.

Ono is already at it again:

Might be the new Brazilian character? Some people have brought up that it looks like Urien's stage but I really doubt the vanilla game will have SFIII characters at this point unless they make Urien the final boss (which they should not do imo).

@hassun: Right now the capcup top 32 includes 8 Americans, 3 Europeans, and 19 players from Asia; if we assume that both PR Balrog and Ricki Ortiz fail to get more points it could well be 6 Americans, 2-3 Europeans, and 21-22 players from Asia.

So @hassun, I guess you were right about the credibility of various leaks: Siliconera seems to be wrong (DLC notwithstanding), and Bogard seems to be on the money. Good stuff.

Make sure to add the Gief vids to the Gief thread as well, if they haven't been added already.

@l1ghtn1n said:

Assuming Zen is from India like the leak says, that sort of rules out Dhalsim then correct?

England - Cammy/Birdie

Japan - Mika/Ryu/Karin/Half-of-Ken

America - Nash/The-other-half-of-Ken

Lol just realize 3/4 (5/7?) of the "Japanese" characters are blond.

  • I asked Brolylegs if he already had a control scheme for the PS4 controller, with SFV being PS4-only for CPT tournaments and all that.
  • The question right after that about Cast going to Japan and training with Nishikin was also from me.

P.S. Cast Blanka's thank you note speech was adorable.
