Subjective opinion: l still love my Epiphone after 10 years. Never felt the urge to upgrade. (Neither the guitar nor the pus; I'm not a pro) Do you plan to order your guitar online or buy it directly at the store? Trying it out yourself is always best, but might be more expensive.
PS: Have you considered one of those new Gibson Les Paul Studios w/o the fancy finishing? Made in the USA and fairly cheap: Worn brown at amazon.com.
The fine folks at Nottingham University seem to have be bitten by the game bug recently. After their neat little feature on Portal 2, they now shine a light on PhD student James Clewett, who also happens to be a former Tetris world champion.
