My Favourite Album Is... [What's Yours?]

It's been a while since we had one of these (nearly 6 months - I searched) so I thought it fine to post this. Was thinking about music today because I'd detached myself from it a bit in the last few weeks (busy with other things). I was considering my favourite album. The Beatles' "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" came to mind. Then left. "Discovery", Daft Punk came to mind. Left. So to did "Meat Is Murder" [The Smiths], "Wild Mood Swings" [The Cure], Parrallel Lines [Blondie], Wide Open Spaces [Dixie Chicks], Kala [MIA], Speak For Yourself [Imogen Heap], Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars [David Bowie].... All left. Many others came and went.

Final decision:

A classic from start to finish. Every single track.

As someone rightfully wrote in the YouTube comments: "if it were possible to have sex with a voice i would want it to be with hers..."

As a big vulture of Post-Rock, I have to agree that "( )" is not the best Sigur Ros album.  I don't care if it's an imaginary language or not, hearing the same verse, at the same pitch, at the same rhythm, throughout all of the album's eleven tracks is grating.

I liked Takk a lot, but overall, I find other Post-Rock groups to be much more enjoyable than Sigur Ros (I listed Godspeed You! in my five favorite albums, for instance).

My first, broke my eyes open like cheap glass wear against the host's fork.  I was a teen when this album hit the stands.  Saw the video a short while after. Remember my older brother and his friends watching it on TV.  Me just sitting wide eyed and mouth gaping, back against the wood paneled far wall.  Them doing their usual weekend haze, and I couldn't understand what that noise was.  Hypnotized.

This album taught me about music.  Didn't pay attention to anything on the radio till Nirvana.  The album hit my ears like acid dripping down the back of my brain.  Psilocybin goo short circuiting.

After this it was all Pearl Jam, RHCP, Green Day, Punk, Grunge and anything with streaming guitar rifts, noisy lyrics and ear thumping bass. It's sucks to think about, what music is today.  Hip Hop isn't all bad, but damn where did all those guys go?  That the change they voted for?

Guess it really was better to burn out, instead to fading away.

I'd say:

Yeah yeah, the sound quality wasn't the greatest, and 60% of the songs were more of the same, but The Day That Never Comes and The Unforgiven III singles (and maybe Cyanide) had me listening to this beast for a good fortnight...nonstop.

*Edit* Well ballz, I for some reason thought you wanted albums only for '08. Here are some more then:
Really good metal that I discovered not too long ago. Especially recommend "Hollow Heart"
"Time" saved this album to be honest.
Another Brick in the Wall (Pt 2) kicks so much ass, units haven't been invented yet that could measure the awesomeness that it contains.

I think I'll stop there for now, don't want to take up an entire page just for me ;)

"Takk..." has always been my favorite Sigur Ros album. But "Med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust" is pretty damn close. One of my favorites of 2008. I've also always loved "Hvarf - Heim", even if its not a true LP.

GYBE is great but Sigur Ros is probably my favorite band OVERALL

At this point the only bands I go see is Sigur Ros and the Decemberists...i used to go to shows all the time.

That being said GYBE is the best show I have ever seen. I saw them in 2001 on the Lift Your Skinny Fists tour...it was spooky...being a week after 9/11 but hopeful.

Takk was brilliant also...its my second favorite...If you havnt heard Von the very first one it is an interesting listen...it also has Hafsol on it which is a song they play to this day.

When it comes to Post-Rock, aside from Godspeed You! (all their albums, by the way, are flipping amazing if you're into momentous instrumental work), I would pop these few albums near the top of the list:

Do Make Say Think -- "Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn"
Mogwai -- "Mr. Beast"
God is an Astronaut -- "Far From Refuge"

Godspeed's the only reason I fell into Post-Rock.  The first time I heard "East Hastings" play during 28 Days Later, I immediately needed to know A) "Who made that fucking track?" and B) "Where can I get more?"

They were really political, so I'm sure the weight of 9/11 was something they were likely aware of during that show.

From left to right.

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights: Its too bad this band hasnt come close to matching this album. Lyrically average but musically impressive.
Track Suggestion: Leif Erikson, The New, PDA, Untitled.

Agalloch - The Mantle: A metal band that has admitted to being more influenced by Godspeed You! Black Emperor than any metal band. Post Rock for those of us with a metal persuasion and a perfect entry for anyone whos interested in jumping into the genre.
Track Suggestion: The Celebration for the Death of Man..., And The Great Cold Death of the Earth, A Desolation Song.

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea: What can be said that hasnt already been said...The best album of the 90s.(Yes even better than OK Computer)
Track Suggestion: Holland, 1945. Oh Comely, The Two Headed Boy Pt. 2., In The Aeroplane Over the Sea,

The Beatles - Abbey Road: The last Beatles album...to think amid the toil and arguments George Martin got the band focused and in the process they recorded a masterpiece. The second half is absolutly unmatched.
Track Suggestion: Something, Here Comes The Sun "The Medley"  You Never Give Me Your Money, Sun King, Mean Mister Mustard, Polythene Pam, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight, The End.

Sigur Ros - Ágætis byrjun: Their second album but first with the sound that made them famous. Much like Bjork the music couldnt come from anywhere but Iceland. Majestic, and triumphant. ( ) often gets credited as their best but IMO this album is teir most consistant.

If you like any of the single tracks please listen to these entire albums...its impossible to pick the best song on any of these. Also alot of great choices in here."

They rolled through here a few weeks back.  Brilliant show.  Their bassist is ridiculously skinny.

When they played "Reitschule", the crowd went nuts.  It was incredible.

That's because The Hawk is Howling is fucking grand.

Easily my favorite album of last year.  Mogwai at their best.  Mr. Beast has sentimental value to me.  But yeah, I agree that Hawk is their most refined work.

Really?  Sometimes I think they're following the post-rock trends a little more piously now than they did then, but tracks like "The Sun Smells Too Loud" are pure gold to me.

RHCPfan27: Born to Run, Sgt. Pepper, the Wall, Blonde on Blonde

Your list is very close to mine. Even specific picks like Wall over DSOTM. I would add "Who's Next" and two more modern ones in Nirvana's Unplugged and Beck's Guero.  I also like Jazz and the fresh take acid jazz makes a nice background to studying, but those are more compilation and single oriented.

"Man, this is a borderline impossible answer, at least I've managed to narrow it down to two bands.

First there's Strung Out, which after well over a decade is still my favorite band. Their lyrics, wether written by Jim Cherry or Jason Cruz really speak to me.
Jordan Burns is the best drummer in punk today if you ask me with his innovative and exciting transitions as well as his thumping beats and Jake and Rob shred on guitars. I feel bad not singling out Chris Aiken, but alas the bassist almost never gets the spotlight.

These are their five best albums in my opinion and I can't decide which one of them I'd consider the best.

But another artist who speaks to my heart is Mark Oliver Everett. More commonly known as E or The Eels.
His lyrics and arrangements are beautiful and he's even more eclectic than Tom Waits (Another artist I love) in how different his music can be.

That is so awesome. I've seen them live twice. Back in 98 when they were opening for NOFX here in Norway and two years ago at the House Of Blues in San Diego.
They're amazing live. I really like their Live In A Dive album, cause not only is it essentially a best of compilation, but it also conveys how insane they are live.

Weezer's Blue Album is a pretty good album though and just about anything by Faunts is always good to listen to.

Thrice are pretty far from Tom Waits. Their a very experimental post punk band who come from a screamo background (Don't worry, they grew outta that genre years ago). They're all over the place though, their last releases was something called The Alchemy Index Vol I, II, III & IV which are each a concept album dedicated to each of the elements. Very eclectic, but also very good. I liken the change they've gone over the years to the time when Deftones went from Around The Fur to White Pony. It's a shame Deftones didn't have the balls to stay the course and just relapsed into their musical stylings before the tremendous White Pony album. Vheissu (The album pictured is fantastic though, I recommmend giving it a try regardless.

If you can get past that Mark's voice doesn't sound like it's been soaked in bourbon, put in a smoke house and beaten with a stick, The Eels' sound is actually very Tom Waits-ish. Hell, Waits sings back up on one of his songs even. And if you don't mind them singing in Norwegian, there's a great band called Kaizer's Orchestra who also have a strong Waitz feel.

The Clash -"Sandinista!"
2 CDs (or 3 LPs) of the band at their most experimental. Lots of dub and reggae influences plus they manage to hit a shitload of other genres along the way. Features the first major rap single by an all-white band ("Magnificent Seven") as well as "Somebody Got Murdered", which is my all-time favorite Clash song. If for some reason you can only have one of their albums, this is the one to get.

I should add that the first time I listened to this was also the same night I accidently did PCP. Lulz.

The Replacements - "Hootennany"
The defining statement from the best forgotten band from the 80s. The Replacements had a lot going against them: they were making non-hardcore punk influenced music at a time when the genre had turned into a characture of itself (aka hardcore), they were all alcoholics, and, really, they didn't want to be good. They saboutaged themselves whenever they could (for further reading get the book "All Over But The Shouting", it's a detailed history of the band and even if you don't like their music, it's a good read), and it's no wonder as to why they've all but been forgotten today. Hootennany is the ultimate album for anyone who's ever been a loser. You'll only be able to relate to songs like "Heyday", "You Lose", "Within Your Reach", and "Color Me Impressed" if you were an outcast at some point in time. Plus it starts and ends with drunkenly recorded joke songs, and it's probably the best drinking album you'll ever listen to.

Meat Puppets - "Meat Puppets II"
Too punk for country fans, too country for punkers, the Meat Puppets are in a class all their own. They kick ridiculous amounts of ass and any of you out there who worship Nirvana might want to check this out so you can see where Kurt Cobain stole his tricks from.

GG Allin - "Dirty Love Songs"
GG Allin was the ultimate shock rocker. He shit on stage, then ate it. Multiple times. He rarely finished shows because ridiuclous shit would go down and things would get destroyed, people would get raped and/or molested and/or pissed on, bones would get broken, etc, etc. This CD collects several GG classics, including (but not limited to) "Bite It, You Scum", "Abuse Myself, I Want to Die", "Drink, Fight, & Fuck", "Hard Candy Cock", "I Wanna Fuck Your Brains Out", and my personal favorite, "Sluts in the City".

Is it actually good music? Hells nah. It's just great fun to listen to.

TSOL - "Beneath the Shadows"
When asked to defend his favorite genre, your typical punker will tell you that it's all about freedom of expression and musical experimentation before making you listen to a bunch of insincere pseudo-rebellious fluff that sounds like the same stuff that's been around since '82. Trust me, I used to be one of those kids. I see them on this forum all the time. Take note, young ones: One day you're going to grow up to be me if you keep with the whole punk thing.

Anyway, "Beneath the Shadows' totally destroyed TSOL's career for awhile. Hardcore bands aren't supposed to have keyboards! Hardcore bands aren't supposed to use real chords! Hardcore bands aren't supposed to write love songs and have instrumentals! People hated this album when it came out, but for me it was a gateway to bands that kept the original punk mindset that fueled bands like Television and The Clash but took the music in insane new directions. Had I never heard this album I'd still be listening to nothing but hardcore and would've never discovered bands like Flipper, Big Black, the Butthole Surfers, the Meat Puppets, etc.
