We just launched a shiny new HTML5 video player and I wanted to briefly point of some interesting stuff about it. It's not a replacement to the current video player, just a little something extra. It's up on all sites for subscribers: http://www.giantbomb.com/video/theater/.
 
  • Uses the same video files we serve to the flash player: H.264 in mp4
  • Uses the flexible box model. If you're a CSS guy, this is awesome.
  • Uses history.pushState to change the URL in the address bar and your history without reloading the page
  • You can save videos to a playlist

Pro Tips!

  • In Chrome, shift + command + f makes the browser full screen. You can't do that in Safari and there's no programatic access it in any browser because of OS spoofing. 
  • Use the spacebar to play/pause
  • Start typing to search for something
 

Sorry Duder

The theater only works in browsers with H.264 video support, like Chrome and Safari.

You can't share playlists right now. But it's on my list. 
 
You can have all the frontend code. I can't stop you. It's all on your computer right now! Just HTML, CSS, and JS. There's very little backend to it.

@gpbmike: I thought the only way to get the new video player code was you had to be on that exact page then right click and view source code. Guess I'm still clueless about these things.

@X19: Yes, that's one way. It'll also (hopefully) be in your browser cache.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, the playlists don't seem to be working for me. I load up the quicklooks playlist, when a video ends it switches to the newest video (even if that was the last one played).
 
Also, would a random video feature by possible? I'd love to load up the quicklook playlist and just hit random and it'll load random videos.

This is the only thing so far that is an advantage to being a subscriber. Happy Hour sucks, but I know it exists. If you do more stuff like this I might subscribe.

@gpbmike: Are there preset playlists like a ER: Persona 4 playlist or a Game Room playlist? 
 
Does it save how far you have got in a video if you don't finish it?

This all looks real nice. I cant say how much I enjoy it yet cause my browser (chrome) was flipping out last night, but I certainly look forward to using it in future. Should be especially handy when looking to kill non-class time at college. Gotta love their lightspeed connection.

The only problem I have is that it's very hard to access your favorite videos from the pop-out menu. It goes away before I can select it.
