Grimace: Best of 2010

  • Mass Effect 2 is not only my favourite game of 2010 but also one of the best games I've ever played. Bioware elegantly handled the effect of decisions made in the first game making sure that every persons experience is nigh on unique. The dialogue is some of the best ever seen in a console game. In fact its so well written that when the games final act is underway you really feel for the characters you're in control of. Not content to stop there, Bioware have streamlined the gameplay magnificently eradicating all of the niggles seen in the first game and made every single encounter as compelling as possible.

  • After five long years in development and so much expectation Alan Wake delivered in spades. The visuals and general atmosphere of this game are unlike anything else (in videogames) so many parts were legitimately creepy. The episodic nature of the game also works wonderfully - hearing Roy Orbison has never filled me with so much unease before. All this along with some great little touches such as the Nightfalls tv show and some great little cameos for Remedy fans combine to make this my second favourite game of the year.

  • Whats insane about AC Brotherhood is not that its a fantastic game, but the fact that it was made in 12 months. Not only does it offer a meaty single player experience but it also adds in a surprisingly polished multiplayer mode.

  • Vanquish is proof that there is life in the already well-trodden third-person shooter genre. Platinum has made everything about this game a blast - from rocket boot-fueled movement to the mid-battle cigarettes. Though it was a brief experience, the fast-paced crazy action meant I kept coming back for more.

  • Easily one of the best downloadable games ever made, Pac Man Championship Edition DX takes a seminal arcade classic and turns it into a frantic and addictive experience.

  • While I don't subscribe to the theory that this is one of the greatest games of all time, I still think its a very well made one. It is very rare to find an action game that can be at once challenging and fun to play. Its also insane.

  • Costume Quest is a fantastic example of how to do a downloadable game. Its simple, it looks slick and its fun.

  • If you really stop and think about it - this story can be picked apart. But if you ignore that and just go with it, Heavy Rain represents one of the more ambitious video game experiences in the modern era.

  • I'm not a huge fan of the Zelda series but for whatever reason this game borrows what it does from the former series and makes it compelling.

  • A nostalgic nugget of fun that when played with four people locally, transcends any other multiplayer experience.
