Best of 2010

2010 was a great year for . There was many good games, here are my top 10.

I played Vanquish after I made this list and it's great. It would go on here somewhere, but I don't care enough to update a outdated list.

List items

  • Bayonetta is the current pinnicle of the genre and the game I have been waiting for ever since Devil May Cry 4 failed to delivir. It is equals parts style and substance. The combat is slick with plenty of depth for those who seek it. The game is highly replayable with tons of stuff to unlock.

  • It took a lot of thought to decide where to place this brilliant but flawed gem. sure, the gameplay is poor but in the context of everything else this game offers the flaws rarely hinder the experence, instead they amuse. For instance, the map is damn near useless, it's zoomed in too far, but instead of being frusrating, it seems as some sort of joke. Deadly Premonition is so enjoyable beacuse it has a ton of heart and unique personality. The game is both absurd and absurdly funny. Deadly Premonition manages to be humorous is ways I have never seen before. For instance, during some dramatic scenes a jazzy tune will play, overpowering the dialouge in the process. The game often changes tones in the drop of a hat. It's things like that, that give Deadly Premonition a tone unlike anything I has ever seen and Why I love it so much.

  • Super Meat boy is challenge done right; it's your fault when you die not the games. The controls are prefect. When you die you spawn almost instanly. This gives the game a great sence of momentum. This is simply gameplay done perfectly.

  • I've always been a fan of Halo's balance of shooting, punching and grenade throwing gameplay, but reach is the first time I got really into it. I sunk over a hundred hours into this game and could put one hundred more.

  • Heavy Rain drew me in like few games do. The mundane first hour was a great way to establish Ethan as a normal person who I should care about. The quick time events helped to engage the player to the tasks the characters were performing, while adding tension in ways only a video game could provide.

  • I was skeptical going in to Super Mario Galaxy 2. I loved the first game beacause it felt so fresh and this one looked like more of the same. In that regard I was impressed, the level design is varied thoughout. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is filled with creative ideas, more so then any other game on this list.

  • In many ways Mass Effect 2 is a big improvement over it's predecessor. The characters are varied and interesting. The gameplay is much more fun to play. The writing and voice work are great.

  • I like this game beacause it's unabashedly anime. The story and characters are over the top, everything is so lightharted and fun. More of your time is spent interacted with the cast ,but there is solid Turn based strategy gameplay as well.

  • This may be the most beautiful game I have ever seen. The areas are varied and vibrant. The pre-renderned cutscenes are mindblowing. I would often stop and pan the camera around just to see the pretty scenery. The soundtrack is fantasic, almost all of the 85 songs in the soundtrack are great. Yes there is actually subtance to this game, the combat is unique and loads of fun.

  • Super Street Fighter IV takes the rock solid foundation of Street Fighter IV and adds more stuff, all of it good. Ten new characters, some stages, online modes, two untras for every character, and a bunch of music.

I'm surprised you put Mass Effect 2 so low. But Bayonetta and Deadly Premonition does not surprise me.

I agree with a lot of games on this list, particularly Bayonetta at #1, it really is the near-perfect successor to Devil May Cry with refined gameplay, a better character, and much more off-the-wall, delightfully awesome elements that I could go on and on about.
Some comments: I don't think Super Meat Boy is "gameplay done perfectly." In fact I think the way it handles challenge, death, and progression is not as ideal as a more traditional platformer approach. I've written at greater length about it in a blog so I'll leave it at that. But it is a very well-crafted game in almost all other respects.
Halo: Reach is quite good but I felt the writing was a step back from ODST's. I know it's fashionable to hate ODST, but the story in Reach takes itself so seriously and I found it extremely dull. The characters and setting I haven't found particularly interesting so far either.
Great analysis of Heavy Rain. Interesting to see Sakura Wars on there, I only played a little bit but it was WEIRD.
