Irrational, irresponsible, nonsensical... I want to buy a PSP Go.

I have a problem.

I want to buy a PSP Go.

I should explain my “problem.”  I don’t have a problem with Sony as a corporation.  I don’t want this short post to devolve into a complaint about fanboys, but I don’t believe in loyalty to enormous companies that just want to make money.  My problem is specifically this:  when the PSP Go was first leaked/announced, my gut reaction was completely negative.  It looked ugly.  They hadn’t changed enough to get me interested.  The price was way, WAY too high.  The whole thing felt like a huge misstep on Sony’s part.

Now I want one.

I’m willing to spend money I really shouldn’t, money I’ll be lamenting later in the year when I read about other people playing Brutal Legend or Forza 3 or whatever game I couldn’t afford to grab.  A brand new PSP 3000 is considerably cheaper.  It also has a UMD drive.  I have fallen hook line and sinker for buying a new shiny thing and playing PS1 games on it.

Suikoden on the go? ROCK IT. Ignore the fact I could rock it for 80 bucks less.

The craziest thing is, I used to own a PSP.  I traded it in, because I never played it!  And here I am, back at square one.  I have to assume that I am the worst example of a consumer in an economy as messed up as this one.  I could satisfy my desire to play PSP games and still get a cheaper option, without even having to go second hand.  Yet, I feel the need, the burning desire, to own the new model.

I wondered, when the PSP Go emerged into the spotlight, what Sony thought they were doing exactly.  Well, now I know.  Whether or not I actually get the thing, people like me are the problem.I I

Nope, the Old PSP can play the same games, and has the UMD thing on there so you buy used games and sell them too.  I would not bother.  For 70 dollars more, it is not worth it.  But the PSP 3000 does have that screen problem. I would go buy your old PSP back fast.

@TheHBK: I traded in the PSP over a year ago.  You're right though, the 3000 makes more sense.

@eroticfishcake: I kind of hope it's a phase... As for the look of it, I've come around, but I have a guilty feeling I am a weak sheep impressed by advertising (in this case at least).

@Kiemoe: It is so bloody shiny!

@Irishjohn: I have the exact same dilemma.  I had a PSP on launch date, traded it in for a DS when I got sick of the games being poor ports of "real" games and now I'm salivating over the PSP go.  There's probably going to be an early price drop given how many complaints there are over the $400AU pricetag so maybe I should wait a while.  Being at the mercy of Sony to dictate the game prices scares me a little too... No chance at second hand games here.

Look into the light. Get an older one on ebay. No new PSP is worth it until they have two analog nubs. Really I want to say get a DS instead...

As somebody who's actually played it, I'd probably say don't go for it.  It feels weird, the nub is placed awkwardly, is easily covered in fingerprints, and is way overpriced.  Unless you really really want to never use discs or use bluetooth headphones, I don't know why you'd pay more for something that pretty much does less.  And it uses memory stick micros.  WTF.

I actually do think I'll get a PSP Go! when the price drops. I hate UMDs, and that 16 gb of memory and sleek design definitely make a good argument.

So, three issues here:

If I had a brain, I'd just get an "old" model, probably the 3000.

The price is ridiculous.

There will either be a price drop within a year, or there'll be a PSP 2.0 or redesign of the Go with a second analog nub.

I shouldn't get one and the guys here that have pointed out I shouldn't make excellent and rational points.  I might still get it though!!! I feel like because I passed on the DSi I'm entitled to a ludicrous upgrade this year.

In my last post I said that the PSP was $400AU.  It's actually $449AU.  At current exchange rates, that's about $400US.

I would go for one when it gets cheaper, but I would only do it if the games I had previously were available on the Store for a reasonable price. Right now, Pursuit Force 1 is something like $23, which is totally shit.

I havent had a PSP for a couple of years now.  If I'm gonna start from square one I dont want a big clunky piece of hardware that I wont carry around because it sticks out of my pocket.  If I actually decide to get a psp, which is getting more and more tempting with the games released recently and within the last year, then I'm going to get the small sleek and easily portable PSP Go.  The only thing stopping me is exactly what everyone is on about, the damn price tag.

I dont think Sony has lost their minds really, I think the pricetag isnt out of the unreasonable range but it is on the high end of what people will accept.  Its mainly just hard when I look at the 3000 price next to the Go price, and the fact that I dont have 250 bucks to blow right now.  If I can save up some money on the side I might consider picking one up, but for now its being put on hold.

p.s. I think the 3000 is the ugly PSP and the Go is a much nicer look and layout.

That's Sony's marketing team : \...

Sadly, I'm, kind of in the same boat. I hate the thing, and everything it stands for, but I somehow want it. I suppose I could trade in my current PSP model for it. I just don't know how much I can get for it...

The thing has custom firmware on it, but I wouldn't really miss it too much. After all, the only thing I use it for is XMB customization and a very small number of emulators. Since the PSP isn't compatible with my wireless security now, the various IM and Internet Radio programs I had put on it are useless.

If I could drive that price down by a margin, I might think about picking it up. Just wish I could trade in some of my UMDs, like Lumines and Final Fantasy Tactics. There's only a select few games I'd really like to keep, but they are the invaluable ones.

For all the hate I've felt towards the Go, I can put aside my gripes if I could actually afford the thing.
