Why ban something that can be incredibly funny? Sure, a lot of times it falls flat because the people posting them try to hard to be funny. But when a meme is posted by people who know how to use them... best internet fun there is.
Besides, with all the epic Whiskey Media Memes that are made here, banning memes altogether would ruin the community. Ruin it I say!

Yeah, I love Borderlands. Bought it during the Steam Summer Peril Sale. Will probably have to get the new DLC when it comes out. Should also see if I can try the co-op someday. Beat it once alone, got a 2nd Play-through started for when I just want to snipe some fools with my corroding Sniper Rifle :D

@Junkerman: Of course! Or I just wanted to make my rant a bit more interesting to read, so I threw in a bullshit list of what a gamer is. You may pick what you want.

@Vinchenzo: I'm not saying I am above anyone. I just think the word "gamer" is silly in itself, and if that is what all the negative people call themselves, then I don't fit in. You don't see people who like movies call themselves "filmists"? No other group has a name for themselves as gamers have, and the very fact that we have that make it seem like gamers are a different kind of person than normal people. Which is retarded.
Also, I am almost too skinny for my own good, I am nowhere near awkward and I don't have a lisp. I don't have acne, I don't use glasses and I talk perfectly fine with girls, my girlfriend and all the rest of the fairer sex. So no, I am not "one of you", as you put it.

@SpiralStairs: Yet the same people who complain about "bad" things in the gaming world keep buying CoD, keep paying high amounts of money for minor DLC, keep ragging on things that aren't "the same shit as before" etc. So it doesn't really work now, does it? If we don't want the same shit every year, why didn't more people buy Psychonauts when it came out? What about other innovative and good games? Why not stop bitching about how much something you have never tried suck, and instead buy actual good games that try and change something you think you don't like about those games?

@TotalEklypse: If we have to call us something, then that is better. Although a lot harder to say. But I am completely fine with not being identified as some special kind of person just because I happen to like video games. I also like to papercraft, but that doesn't mean I am a papercraftist.

Anywho, seems a lot of people take this way to seriously. This person got the gist of it:
@SumDeus said:
" Just play games and have fun. Who cares what you call yourself? "

But then again, this blog was not about what we call ourself. It was about how negative gamers are today towards everything new and unfamiliar. So let us discuss that instead. Why do people hate Kinect before it comes out? Why do people hate the Wii because it beckons to people who usually don't play games? Why do people hate Halo with such a passion that they hope the Xbox will fail because of it? In short, why are people who play games so damned negative towards everything?

@Eurobum: First of all, you are smarter than me, using words and sentences that make little sense to my non-English brain. But I do think I get the gist of what you are saying.
It is certainly not "cute irony", but I wouldn't call it a self-contradiction either. The definition of a rant says this: " A rant is a speech or text that does not present a well-researched and calm argument, rather, it is typically an attack on an idea, a person or an institution."
It is also the tenth solo of Ian Hunter, but that has nothing to do with anything.

It was a rant. A spur of the moment venting on all the negativity that has been spewed on all kinds of gaming the past year. I am an optimistic person, but even I get sick of things like that. So I had to get it out, to get it out of my system. Sure, I could have just written it down in private, but then again, I had a blog. Why not use it? Why not see if there are more people thinking what I am thinking? Seeing all the replies here has made me more optimistic again. It helped. So I don't care if I more or less destroyed my point by making it, I managed to do what I set out to do. Or something. I don't know.
And for the record, there is no sarcasm in this post. So don't attack me for being sarcastic. I am not. Damn, this might seem sarcastic as well. To hell with it.

@Bellum:  But then how can you explain people hating Halo when they have never even played it? When confronting all the people who say they think Halo sucks by a poll on The Escapist a while back, about 50% had never played it. A bunch of people had just seen footage, and a minority hadn't even that. I can accept that my argument is a fallback argument most of the time, but when people hate something popular without really having a reason to, doesn't this mean they hate it because of its popularity?

@TwoLines:  I agree that the name "gamer" is silly. Which Yahtzee seems to agree with you on. Yet, it is easier to say than "person who like video games". So I am kinda torn on that.

@BunkerBuster:
Oh God, marketing people...

@crusader8463: Yes, sadly that is the rule. Oh well.

@Lordborg909:  I would say that is slightly over the top. That is also one of the reasons why I don't bother playing MP with people I don't know.

@AmonHouston: It is fine if you don't like the time limit, but you wouldn't go so far as to say that the time limit ruins the game completely? Surely even people who don't like the time limit must see that without it, the game would be boring as hell. You would have no sense of urgency, thus no sense of panic, which a zombie uprising should have plenty of. That is what a lot of people say. One guy even made a forum post saying the "developers of DR2 doesn't listen to the community at all" because they still have a time limit in the second game.

@crusader8463: While you are right about this being mostly kids trolling, I have seen so many instances of mature decent people being like this. Heck, the majority of users on The Escapist hate, or at least dislike, Halo. That site is what I would call one of the best sites when it comes to smart users. The majority of gamers all over the internet already hate Kinect.

If trolls was the only people being negative like this, then I wouldn't care. Trolls be trollin'. But this has become widespread enough now, so I just had to rant about it. I think the final drop in the glass was the thread on Duke Nukem Forever on GoG.com. Instead of talking about DKF it went on to be a thread bitching about what consoles do to multiplatform games, how much Borderlands sucked because it also came out on consoles etc.

This community I like though. Sure there are negative people here as well, but all in all people are good. I still enjoy games, so the negative people haven't won yet!

@Lordborg909: I usually never like multiplayer games because of how most gamers are. I play the occasional TF2, because there you can just have fun. CS though... played it once or twice. Being badmouthed because I suck at a game I have never played before is just stupid. This has made me develope an aversion to MP in games, now mostly playing MP only with people I know well. This is why my Empire in Shores of Hazeron is a one-man Empire.

@Bellum: It's not, bro. I like it when people disagree, because then I might learn something new. Discussing things is always a great way to to so. But when people hate something just because it is a) new, or b) popular, you throw rationality out the window. I don't see it as a wrong thing to do if I bash people like that.

@Shirogane: Exactly. Yet all I see all over message boards are negative talk towards new things. Take GoG.com for instance. A great site. The forum though, is not so great, because a mere mention of Steam will send any thread crashing down with hate towards said digital distributor.
I just want to have fun. Steam provides a lot of fun games. Ergo, Steam is awesome. If you don't like it, that is fine. But they way people go on about how bad it is makes it look like Steam murdered their dog or something.

@Lordborg909:
I am 23 myself. But I don't think age has much to do with it. Again, take GoG.com. I think most members there are older than me. Yet they still bitch about Steam.

@buwchbach: Yes, the word "noob" should die. When I come into a new game, I am a "newbie", but that is a different thing.
Some communities are good though. Like Shores of Hazeron. I haven't seen a friendlier player base ever before. If you ask a question in that game, no matter how stupid, people will answer.

@blacklabeldomm:  The hate for Halo is ludicrous really. So many hate it because it is popular. A lot of people hate it because there are "so many games now!" Yeah, 'cause there aren't many games in other franchises, like Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid. I don't hear people bitch about MGS having too many games.
I love Halo, but mostly because of all the backstory. And that you can only get in the books. Seeing how many gamers also hate to read...

That's right. I opt out of being called that, because I don't fit into that space anymore. Let us check what the criteria are for being called a gamer.

  • Like to play games, and do so almost every day.
- I do. Some days I only play for half an hour or so, but I mostly play more than that. And if I don't play at all I most likely read about games at least. So I got this point covered.
  • Know things about almost every platform of gaming.
- I do. I read a lot about gaming in general, so I know more and more about this every day. A "Check" on this point as well.
  •  Own at least one gaming platform.
- I own a gaming PC, Xbox 360, Wii and a DSXL. So I got this as well.
  • Bitch and moan about a variety of minor things having to do with gaming.
- Hmm. I don't do this.
  • Be extremely negative towards something you have never tried because it is new.
- I don't do this either...

So there you have it. To be called a gamer these days it seems you have to be negative and bitch about things. Let me write down a few of the things I have seen around the internet the past year(s) or so:
- [insert popular game title] suck! It is the worst game ever to come out!
- They should just stop making Kinect. It just doesn't have any use at all. I'm not going to buy it, so why bother?
- Consoles are for retards. If you cannot use a computer, you shouldn't be called a gamer.
- Causal gamers aren't gamers. I wish they all died, 'cause then we might get better games on the Wii.
- The Wii is a waste of space. Nothing but shovelware and casual crap no-one wants.
- Dead Rising 2 is going to suck because it has a time limit and the saving is crap.
- Steam is a cancer in gaming. I hope it crash and burns so that we non DRM people win.

I am not saying it is wrong to dislike something. You can hate Halo all you like, you can think the Wii is stupid. But if you cannot get it into your skull that someone think the opposite, then you are stupid. I don't like Metal Gear Solid. I don't like Final Fantasy. You do? Great! We are different then. We have different taste when it comes to games. That is what so many gamers these days seem to forget.

*sigh*
I hereby opt out of all that. I am no longer a gamer. I'm just a guy who like to play video games now and then. I love Steam, I love my Xbox and I am hopeful that Kinect will turn out good. I love the time limit in DR, and I am sure I will love it in DR2 as well. I don't like DRM, but it is not going to stop me buying games I really want.
I am optimistic about things, which means I don't fit into the gamer mold these days.  Everyone else who are optimistic about things are free to join me in having fun. Which gaming is really about.

I guess this whole blog post is a bit ironic. Here I am, bitching and moaning about being sick of gamers bitching and moaning. But I just had to get this rant out.
