@jiggajoe14: It was better than Attack on Titan for me, but I'd imagine I'm in the minority there.

Yeah I feel like SFV's issues have been blown out of proportion. It's not like it's Battlefield 4 or something. Yeah the servers were wonky the first few days, but after that they were pretty stable for most people. Honestly I feel like if SFV launched fine and kept it's content schedule perfect people would still complain because there's no arcade mode. Maybe people are just getting more and more offput by weird/imperfect launches, but SFV is far from the worst of them and it's a fantastic game.

@zeik: for me, the look is definitely part of it. All my favorite console JRPGs looked great when they were released.

Initially, I wasn't comparing TMS to the endless ocean of handheld JRPGs but to the more restrained pool of better looking console JRPGs. If you want to start naming all the well received recent handheld JRPGs we would be here all day. Unfortunately I don't really have any interest in those games hence my initial question.

Honestly TMS doesn't look that hot in a lot of places and coasts mostly on style rather than great graphics. Same with pretty much every SMT/Persona game. Hell you can probably compare Persona 5 trailers to a lot of modern games and it wouldn't hold up, but the stylish presentation makes up for it. I'm sure ToCS was made with Vita in mind, but saying it doesn't count because it's elsewhere and doesn't look amazing seems silly in today's world where most JRPGs are niche budget titles.

@kerse: I don't think they are inherently bad, but they often aren't done great. The one in Golden Time is set up pretty well in my opinion and it does a good job with it. I do think it's relied on too much and when it's bad it's usually really bad.

It's definitely the best console JRPG in a while. Maybe the best since Persona 4? Blanking on serious contenders. FF13-1-2-3 were not as good. 360 JRPGs were bad to middling (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Star Ocean, etc). Can anyone think of a great console JRPG in the last 10ish years?

Edit: tales of vesperia is probably the right answer here. That was a while ago though.

NieR and Drakengard 3 are both fantastic, but not really traditional JRPGs. Both Xenoblade games. Final Fantasy Type 0 is real good. I like a few of the Atelier games a whole bunch. Honestly I remember liking what I played of Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. That's about all I can think of off the top of my head, but I bet there's a few more.

@bisonhero: All those games were pretty great though. P4A is a great light anime fighter that I actually like more than Blazblue. PQ is a great mesh of both of those games with a pretty whatever story and some great music. Catherine is basically what got me into visual novels proper and while it's gameplay isn't perfect, the story is one of the best out there in games.

On topic though I am a hardcore SMT fan and a hardcore FE fan and I love everything about this game. I like that they just did their own thing. I feel if this was closer to either it would've not satisfied anyone anyways, so I'm glad we just got a weird great game. Maybe the impact of it being not much of either is lessened by having 3 FE games out a few months ago and a new SMT/a darker looking Persona 5 on the horizon. I've been pretty satisfied with what they did since day one. Then again I love Idolm@ster and Love Live. Also I think there's plenty of Fire Emblem stuff in this game. It's just not immediately obvious and is more fanservicey.

@golguin: Actually the only thing that this episode really spoiled is R+L=J which everyone already knew. I'm unsure of any other major spoiler that will definitely happen in the book. Really the last two seasons are so ridiculously different than that I don't think it will spoil anything major besides who is going to win which I honestly don't care that much about. I care about characters stories which the writers this season sure didn't as they just went through a list of characters they didn't want to write for anymore and killed them.

I'm running real low on spots in my top 10. Glad not much else besides Gundam Extreme Vs Force and FFXV is getting me real hype.

Man did that feel like a rushed piece of garbage. Every death felt like shock value or super anticlimactic. It really felt like the writers wrote a list of characters they didn't want to write for anymore that weren't main characters and decided to murder then all. I laughed a lot. Especially at Tommen's suicide. It just felt like lame twist after lame twist the whole episode. Man I just hated every single thing about this episode. I really hope D&D never write anything again after this show.
