Cartoon Retrospective: Hey Arnold!

For anyone reading this that's not informed: I'm writing a series of blogs about cartoons. My loose plan is to feature one cartoon per blog and tell you--dear reader--why I love each featured cartoon. We can then proceed to recall the 'good ole days' of our respective youths.

Full series:

  • Part 1 -- "Hey Arnold!" (You're reading it!)
  • Part 2 -- "The Magic School Bus"
  • Part 3 -- "Rugrats"
  • Part 4 -- "Spider-Man"

Hey Arnold!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls:

I like cartoons. However, I don't watch them nearly as much as I used to. The memories I have of watching cartoons in my youth though are pretty dang fond. I think everyone else here likes cartoons too, so I'm going to write some blogs about them. I don't really have a plan for this. I'm just going to sit down every so often and write about whatever cartoons pop into my head, like this one:

Hey Arnold!
Hey Arnold!

So I was born 1990 and grew up in what I have come to believe was the heyday of cartoons. Nickelodeon was in full force, and one of my favrite Nick shows was undoubtedly "Hey Arnold!". Hey Arnold! was great, I think everyone can agree on that. The characters were relatable and fun. The situations Arnold and pals got into were always kind of crazy but plausible. I think those things added a lot to the likablility of the show.

Gotta love Harold
Gotta love Harold

So quick rundown of the characters: Obviously Arnold is the hero of the series. He's a smart, lovable football-headed boy that lives with his Grandparents in a boarding house. Arnold's a great character as he's always helping others with their problems and learning lessons in the process. Then there's the best friend Gerald. You know, the bro with the tube-shaped afro. Gerald's awesome if only for the sweet handshake he commonly performs with Arnold. The sound that their thumb's inexplicably produce is amazing. I couldn't find a video of it, but it's almost as good as this.

Poor Brainy
Poor Brainy

The third major character is the girl that torments Arnold but of course has a secret crush on him: Helga Pataki. Helga is delightfully schizophrenic, and never fails to spice up an episode. The great thing about Hey Arnold! is that even the supporting characters are fantastic. Characters like Harold, Stinky, Sid, Phoebe, Brainy, and Rhonda all bring a lot to the table. Brainy in particular is one of my favorites as he is constantly getting hit in the face by Helga--usually just after Helga gets all emotional about Arnold.

I don't know many of the actual names of episodes, but there are a ton that stick out in my mind for one reason or another. I'm not exactly sure why, but the episode where Arnold and friends decide to renovate the old lot in his neighborhood into a baseball field is one that I loved. I actually found this episode on YouTube with some random searching. Turns out is called "The Vacant Lot".

Another great episode was the camping trip one. In this episode, Arnold and Gerald ditch Arnold's grandpa (and his old-school techniques) while camping to hang out with Helga and her dad who brought all the high-tech gear he could fit into his enourmous RV. Long story short, all the fancy technology fails in one way or another and only the wilderness skills that Arnold's grandpa taught him earlier could save the day.

There are seemingly endless terrific episodes of Hey Arnold! that I could reminisce about, but this blog would be 1,000 pages. So this has been my first cartoon retrospective blog. Planning on more to come. Last thing, everyone should check out this video; it's outstanding:

It would be awesome if you guys shared your own favorite "Hey Arnold!" episodes/memories!(You're reading it!)

It was huge over here in england too, and my favourite show as a kid. That baseball episode always stuck in my mind too.

And you're right, really memorable characters. As soon as i read those names i could remember their faces.

Always remember the shrine Helga has, made out of bubblegum and scrap, amazing.
Also, the episode where they have to save the giant turtle down at the aquarium? that was hey, arnold right?
Also 'Stoop Kid'.
Also the episode where Arnoldsfavourite baseball player is retiring, he goes to his last game only to get a bad seat. But he gets his ball signed at the end.
Also i had a crush on Lila.

This blog makes me scared that my brain was melted as a child. I was also born in 1990 and watched this show until probably 2nd grade. I honestly can't remember much at all from this show, besides a couple really small snippets.

Well...that video woke me up to that whole episode, though. And I guess I remember the one where they all got out of school for a snow day. There was also one episode where Arnold and Gerald skipped out on school, and Arnold had to perfectly mimic his grandpa's voice when calling in sick. It's funny that I remember those ones. I must have really hated elementary school. But hey, what gamer didn't?

Suggestion for next cartoon: Action League Now!

Hey Arnold! was one of Nick's best shows in its entire history. Everything on there now is mostly shit.

I loved Hey Arnold. Nickelodeon completely sucks now because most of it is just really crappy teenager filled "sitcoms". Stuff like iCarly, Big Time Rush, and Victorious makes me wonder, what happened?

Hey JJ.
I just wanted you to know that I probably love you.
I loved and continue to love this show, I'm not being facetious when I say that it was one of the most funny and sincere cartoon shows that has ever been aired.
That's the thing, it was sincere. There was something heartfelt about the whole thing, you really, truly liked Arnold, he was a seriously good kid. How many cartoon shows are about a good, non-caricatured good kid?
I can barely name any notable ones.

Big Time Rush is a show about a boy band and their stupid unfunny adventures (literally, an awful, rotten, no good boy band) and Victorious is about a bunch of skinny ass teenage girls wearing the maaaad crazy short shorts and their adventures in high school or wherever they are. There are boys, mind you, but come on, anyone who watches that show isn't watching it for the males. Let's be realistic here.

I say, bring back the cartoons! Spongebob is the only good show on Nickelodeon. I happen to enjoy Spongebob a lot.

Also, Big Time Rush is one of those shows that has to have some sort of annoying sound effect every 5 seconds.

I think it needs to be said that this show was just plain gorgeous, too. In addition to all of its stellar qualities, the artwork in it was very well done. I think the screencaps you guys have posted have illustrated that well. Captured the feel of growing up in the city in a really wonderful way.

The show lasted five seasons, and I'm tempted to pick them up.

Yeah I was born a bit after those shows. I've definitely seen some episodes of a few of those here and there though. In the case of Thundercats, I've seen quite a few actually. Thundercats rocks.

Oh man, awesome memories! I can't remember anything specific except this one episode where Gerald get's so angry with his parents that he leaves home and moves into Arnold's block or hotel or whateverthefuck it is. And then his parent's come to visit and he has left the light on and his dad goes "WHY DID YOU LEAVE THIS LIGHT ON?! DON'T YOU KNOW HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY COS- oh" because he remembers he isn't paying for it. That cracked me up.

I like the Snow Day episode of Hey Arnold. SCHOOL IS OUT! PS: 118 is closed!!

The older cartoons have always been good. Rocko's Modern Life, Hey Arnold, Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats, Samurai Jack, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Pink Panther, Dexter's Lab, Cow and Chicken, Johnny Bravo, Popeye, Loony Toons, Scooby Doo, Doug.......... I do think that the older cartoons are certainly better than many cartoons on now. The only thing that I practically watch anymore is Spongebob, but Spongebob is older than what some people think. Been around for 11 years and still counting. Soon enough that will change when the Legend of Korra comes about.

early 2000 was pretty good too, to be fair.

Courage, Codename: KND, Jimmy Neutron, Danny Phantom... but I probably spent more time than usual watching cartoons. Danny Phantom I would rank up there with my favorite cartoons though.
