I bought an Xbox "Slim": Ask me anything

Not that you guys don't already know everything about it. But I have one now and it seems pretty awesome. It's very quiet. Slightly less quiet with a disc spinning bu oh man it's soo much improved. The beep sounds on the touch buttons are nice. But oh no! It already has finger prints on it!

Go go bad camera phone pictures!

I payed a whopping $65 after my trade deal with Gamestop. Pretty good stuff considering the only thing I really lost was one controller. The other things I had to trade (the HDD and Wifi adapter) are not only in the new console already, but improved upon. I'm excited.

Imma go play some Ekksbawks!

I was surprised how quiet it is. Like even if there is no ambient background noise, you still have to put your ear to the console to hear it, assuming the disk isn't spinning. Even then its still quieter than an old console running off the HD.

I think it lights up red in the center, on the little power icon. I'm just praying it can endure until next console generation though. "

I heard that it doesn't use red lights anymore but has green lights that mean the same thing.

Right, on the ring around the power button, it has only green (as far as i know). But in the GB unboxing video, the microsoft employee alluded to the center power icon of the power button lighting up red in a case of failure. Not sure if that;s true, but it's in the video, you can watch it.

Since the box is smaller would it be easier to run with than the old 360? If I dropped it in a dumpster while I was running would it still work if I came back for it a few hours later?

Really nice! I'm not 100% sure, but I think my signal is stronger than before. I was under the impression that a wireless N adapter would have no noticeable effect without a matching N router, but I swear I never head full bars before. It's usually 3 bars, even dipping down to 2 at times. But I turned it on and had full bars. So yeah, seems great.

No. You need a transfer kit to move your data. Or you can use a USB flash drive, but trust me, you want to use a transfer kit if you have a lot of data.

If you put your hand over the vents, does it get really hot, or is it sort of only warm? I want to know how much heat it's generating or venting out.

Well, I guess what I'm asking is that can you replace that hard drive? In case it breaks or has corrupted data. Or they bring out a gazillion TB hard drive?

Yeah, as I said before, it gets a lot warmer than I thought on the side vent. The side vent as far as I can tell is the only one exhausting heat, and so yeah, very warm. Not burning hot, but nearly if you put your hand right on it.

No idea what MS is planning in terms of replacements/upgrades.

Hexic HD is still the standard preloaded game. It also came with a few XBLA demos like Kingdom for Keflings, but I deleted those strait away. As far as I knooow, it does not come with any Xbox Live card. Unless I missed it in the box, you're on your own there.

I don't know, it seems alright. I've never really had a problem with it though so I'm probably the wrong person to ask. All I can say is it feels the same to me.

Just like any new controller I've used, the Dpad seems a bit sticky, and needs a little extra pressure for it to work. But all new controllers I've used do that. Im sure its nothing to do with the new model. If your asking if it works any better, it doesn't. Other than a colour redesign, its the same controller.

I actually haven't layed it down yet. It has some decent sized rubber feet on the side though, so it doesn't seem like it would be a problem.

I got my slim yesterday morning at Gamestop. I used it through out the day playing videos, Netflix, and Batman AA. Last night I watched some Peter Gunn on Netflix, played more Batman AA then called it a night.
I awoke this morning and wanted to play some Netflix as I get ready to head out for the weekend. When I turned on the 360slim this LOUD fuzzy sound came out of the TV. You know that annoying sound you hear when a analog TV is not tuned on a channel? That was the sound. Every sound the xbox makes while selecting My Xbox, selecting settings, playing an LIVE arcade game, and watch Netflix was just that annoying fuzz. I restarted the xbox several times with no luck. I reconnected the HDMI cable a couple of times with no luck.
After checking the internets for any information, I started the 360 again. It sounds like it should. I'm still concerned. I will be trying to call MS but as of right now I have to head out of town.

Ok here's a question.

  1. Will the new 360 with wireless N standard work with my router with wireless G standard?
  2. If I have to upgrade my router will my wireless G standard computer work with my new wireless N router

I've been googling this for minutes and I can't seem to find either answer

  1. Yes. I also have a g/b router and it works fine if not better then before.
  2. Again yes. Although I know that n routers have the option to operate in different frequencies. If it's set to 2.4Ghz, any g/b adapter should be able to connect to an n router.

For people who are wondering:

My local GameStop allowed me to trade my HDD in after I transferred all of my data to the new Xbox (using the transfer cable) for the trade-in deal credit.  All you have to do is make two trips (:P) and show your receipt.  Also, using the transfer cable is extremely easy; you just plug it in, turn the console on, and it should ask you if you would like to transfer the data over.

Well that was nice of them. There's a chance I could have done that too, but I didn't want to pay $20 for the transfer kit.

Considering all I had to give up for it was $65 and one controller, it was definitely worth it for me. I had a refurb system that was bound to fail again, so I figured I'd be better off with this new one in terms of reliability. If you don't have an Xbox to trade, or you don't want to trade one, then it depends on individual tastes. It's a nice machine though, I can say that.

I wouldn't either, but I had bought a 120Gb HDD about 1 1/2 years ago, so I did not have to purchase it.

For one of the first times ever, I'm actually extremely satisfied with my GS trade-in; I too got my new Xbox for around $70.

@JJWeatherman:  When you traded in your old Xbox, did you have to trade in the whole package - i.e. did you put the system in the box with all the cables and such? I just want to know if I have to trade in the HDMI cable I got when I bought my Elite.

One more question: did you trade in two controllers or just one? I have two controllers but I only use one because the other one is kind of crappy. I was thinking that I could keep my original controller (the one I got with the system and which is my primary one) and trade in the crappy one.

I transfered everything that I couldn't redownload (like game saves) onto a flash drive. Kinda sucks because I have to do another license transfer to the new console. Except I cant do it without calling tech support and complaining because the licenses were recently transfered to my old repaired console and you can only transfer once per year. "

The deal for the system alone is: one 360 system, one controller (of any type i assume), power cables, av cables. So whatever av cables came with it, you will need to trade. You can keep your HDMI.

After that, you can trade various accessories like extra controllers or wireless adapters, or HDDs, etc.

Link, cause it's easier.  :P

No, it doesn't come with the split cords anymore. Just the lame old composite. Microsoft really cheaped out on cables. It can't be that much to throw an HDMI into every box judging by Monoprice.com's prices. If you buy in bulk, you can get 6 foot cables for like $2 each. Microsoft may even be able to get a better deal than that. But whatever.

I haven't actually been able to test the game library loading speeds because I'm waiting for my license transfer to go through before I redownload all my games and stuff. Seems about the same just browsing around the marketplace and whatnot though.

It can keep hot things hot if you set them next to the side vent. No go on keeping cold things cold unfortunately.

@JJWeatherman:  Thanks for your reply. I am considering this deal but as I live in Sweden the slim Xbox is not available for at least a month. Though I did find a similar deal on a Swedish GameStop site. My biggest concern though is the data transfer and of course the price.

Anyway, hope your new Xbox will live a long and prosperous life. Yeah, I know, that sounded weird :-P

@blitzkriegblizzard: I got the reference.  Unfortunately, the person who posted the picture personally failed at it for me, as the poster was asking the question "does he look like a bitch?"...which is a question asked BY Sam Jackson ABOUT Marsellus Wallace.  A picture of Marsellus Wallace would've made that picture and comment a much better reference and fit, as well as more hilarious...

...because Marsellus Wallace DOES look like a bitch!

@JJWeatherman: What do you mean "license transfer"?  I've taken my Xbox Live profile to other Xbox consoles and downloaded DLC and such with no issue before.  Hell, we've done it at work with over 40 Xbox consoles and never needed some kind of "license transfer".

*EDIT*  I should point out that I am talking about consoles that are not refurbished.  They are completely different, bought at a separate store Xbox 360 consoles.  They do have the same hard drives on them from previous Xbox 360s, though.

The problem is that my brother and I have a LOT of stuff on that hard drive and tied to accounts.  We'd be trading in our hard drive in order to get this new 360, which could prove problematic in trying to use a transfer kit...

When you download anything on the marketplace, it is assigned a license that is specific to the console you download it on. I think it's also tied to Gamertags, but I'm not exactly sure how it works. Since I have a new console, I have to transfer the licenses over to the new one to be able to use all the old stuff I bought. I think arcade games are actually only tied to Gamertag, so I may be able to download those now, but things like Rock Band DLC, I can't redownload and play without the license transfer.

Someone mentioned earlier that Gamestop let them transfer their data in the store as they bought the new 360. You could ask for that.

I have 3 dogs in my household.  I like Pokemon.  Is the new 360 for me?
