Top 7(?) Games I Actually Played in 2016

This is a list of the best games that I, real life games journalist Jordan Mallory, actually played in 2016. There are a lot of assuredly great games missing from this list! Sorry!

List items

  • Nothing will ever replace the original Dark Souls in my heart, but Dark Souls III comes very close. The return of kicking is greatly appreciated, unlike those skittery water bug people in the sewers, which are the only Dark Souls enemies to ever legitimately unnerve me.

  • This game got me to go OUTSIDE in LOS ANGELES and WALK AROUND, and thus deserves some kind of Nobel prize.

  • Easily the best F2P game I played this year! Had low expectations on account of it being F2P and from Grasshopper Manufacture, but I've been on this tip non-stop since it launched. Excellent style and presentation, and the combat is better than it seems at first blush. Think of it as kind of a loose, arcadey Souls game.

  • An adorable, hectic and challenging co-op experience that will put any couple to the test. Easily the best time travel game (that I played) of 2016.

  • This is my first one of these, I don't like how excited everyone is about murder but I do like that I got to play Crash Bandicoot.

  • Still in Early Access I guess so keep that in mind, but I've definitely gotten my $20's worth of cute out of Slime Rancher. I love my squishy exploding children.

  • Full disclosure, I backed Amplitude on Kickstarter back when that was happening. Overall I think this game is a success, as most of the songs are fun and the gameplay is as challenging/rewarding as it ever was. My main complaints are with some of the lyrics being a bit rote, and with the process required to unlock Super difficulty being opaque and annoying. Also deserves props for being an excellent queer love story from a mainstream developer.
