whenever Phil Collins comes up, I feel compelled to tell my story. My wife and I had our first date / not really a date / ok it was complicated "first date" at his Champaign, IL concert in 1997. That was the night she said she realized she wanted to be with me.
Fast forward 3 years later and my wife and I are getting married and she sends a note to Phil's fan mail address asking him (brace yourself) to play at our wedding. His publicist writes back and says no Phil can't make your wedding. Fast forward to the month before our wedding and my wife receives an envelope from England which she refuses to show me until the day after our wedding - and it's a wedding card, signed by Phil Collins.
To this day, my wife and I are fiercely loyal to Phil and will always remain so for obvious reasons.
so so late to the party on this (because baseball) but here's my pre order story :
In 2004, I was WAY WAY WAY into MechAssault. I pre-ordered and took a vacation day from work for the release of Mech Assault 2. I ignored Jeff's 79 review score because Mech Assault was AWESOME. I pre ordered the game because I wanted to be SURE that I would have my copy on DAY ONE.
Then Day ONE comes and whoever the retailer was (I think think it was Gamestop) says "nope it's not out yet, we can't sell it" so I go to the internet and the game's lead programmer TJ "Paingod" Warner says "no, they're wrong, the game is out today" so I went to EB Games and bought it and told Gamestop "hey you just lost a sale".
And I've never ever pre-ordered a retail game since. And then Mech Assault 2 sucked. Sad face.
hearing Jeff talk about this on the podcast convinced me not to play this.
this sounds exactly like the type of game that made me sick to my stomach with Call of Duty MW 1-3 years back. Too fast, too much, too high of a learning curve, not fun unless you're going to play it night and day and day and night at fully caffeinated levels at all time.
And I hate that. But I very much appreciate his assessment of the game.
there was this game I played in high school or college (can't remember) where you were the man and you had to have sex with a woman before a timer ran out or you died. Presumably you were super horny.
BUT it was a whorehouse (I think) so you had to search for condoms before you had sex. Now you COULD have sex with the first girl you saw without the condom but you would run the risk of contracting an STD and dying (instantly).
So you had to play this constant balance between having enough condoms and not letting the timer run out before you had sex.
It wasn't an especially good game but as a horny older teen I found it somewhat irresistible despite the rather rudimentary graphics (we're talking Berzerk or maybe a little better (but not a lot)).
Sounds like some things never change when it comes to that stuff.
