@silverglyph: Still not sure why so many Youtube videos use weird voice filters. Anywho, I feel like this video misses the point a bit. Someone saying that maybe the label of games doesn't fit doesn't mean that the alternative is to tell people that they can't make games the way they want to because it doesn't qualify. It would be to do the opposite really, which is to say widen the perception of what can be created for this medium by taking away the nomenclature that it has to do with identifying as a game. It's not saying the classic type of game experience is better or worse than something more nontraditional. There's room for any type of game and most gamers can get into games of either type and not feel like they have to pick any side. It's more about analyzing what the medium has become and what it's capable of and making sure we are giving it the credit it deserves.

@duluoz: I agree with you that reading through a story may involve a lot of things related to thinking and using your brain to ponder over some things and figure them out. I meant they are passive in a more literal sense, as in, you don't physically interact with it aside from looking at it. With games you actually physically interact by inputting controls. And yeah, the name itself doesn't change what it is, it's just used as a utility so we have a name for it. I wonder if it changes someone's perception of what it is or what it could be though. I think for most 'gamers' though, we can easily look past that and see all of the potential uses of current technology in the gaming spectrum.

@southexpected: I mean we've used the term game to describe video games for so long that we no longer think about what that word means, it's just become a name with no actual meaning. At least for the people who play games and have used the word for years.

@jinoru: What would be considered 'work' is probably a bit subjective though. There are certainly games where people are just grinding materials or doing something really uninteresting looking and monotonous. Some people get a feeling of relaxation from things like mining in EVE or WOW or organizing an inventory while others would see it as work. But you're right that the term game implies that it is something more light-hearted. With that said though, there are plenty of people who take real life sports very seriously and they would be considered games.

I'm amazed at the amount of patience I had playing games as a kid. I've probably beat Sonic Spinball about a dozen times when I was younger. There were a few cool levels, but that second one was so frustrating. Eternal Champions was amazing though. I still remember being shocked at the one level where they burn a witch in the background.

@arbayer2: Oh hell yeah, lol. I remember beating this as a kid and promptly starting a drawing of the Robotnik mech end boss.

Sounds cool, you should try to put some instruments in the left and right channels instead of just the middle channel in order to give it a fuller sound. Not sure how much that specific program lets you tinker with those things though. FL Studio is pretty easy to get into if you want something a little more full-featured.

@sinusoidal: That's true, I remember playing Sonic for the first time and I had that same thought that I could play this game forever and be happy because it blew me away so much. But yeah, not so much. Older games getting HD remakes and being touched up does help to temper that expectation a little bit I think though, since we just have a memory of the game looking good, but our threshold for what is 'good' has changed considerably. I started playing the Grandia II remaster recently and it looks similar to how I remember it. If I played it untouched from the original I'd probably think it looks a bit worse than I remember. As you said though, the time in our lives that we play a game makes a difference. We're much less cynical and more impressionable when we're kids.

@flashflood_29: Thanks a lot for reading! I also have very fond memories of playing through Kingdom Hearts. It was one of the first games that I beat and then went back to collect all the ultimate weapons because I wanted to squeeze absolutely everything I could out of the game. I agree that the experience you had in the past with a game should give some credence to how you rank it personally. On one end you could remember a game as being better than it was because of nostalgia, but at the opposite end someone who never played it might not be able to appreciate why it was so important in its time. I think somewhere in the middle of that scale is a fair compliment to a game based on the experience you had with it.
