GOTY 2013

This is going to be a tough one, because I won't list anything that wasn't actually released in 2013. The majority of this year was me working through backlog ranging from original XBox games like Jet Set Radio Future, to GTA IV and the expansions, to earlier Saints Row games, and plenty of other old stuff. Didn't buy the new consoles, either.

I do not claim that these are the ten best games that came out this year by any means, I just ordered the ones I did play. Aside from a ton of older games I still need to go through, I'll be adding Saints Row IV, Tomb Raider, and GTA V to my "someday I'll get to it" list.

I usually do wordy explanations for everything since I hate just throwing games out there without at least trying to convey why I feel the way I do about them, but I'll be leaving a lot of that out this time. This just wasn't a year that really grabbed me as far as gaming goes since I was so caught up in old stuff.

Walking Dead S2E1 and Wolf Among Us E1 are not in contention, going to wait until next year when we have the full picture.

List items

  • I am shocked that they went ahead and not only developed this (since the music game thing was already dead when the FIRST game came out), but released it and made a significant improvement over the previous game. Tons of respect to the Rocksmith team for being the lone torch-holder for what was my favorite game genre of the last 10 years, and doing an incredibly admirable job of it.

  • Never liked the KI franchise in the 90's. Not even a little bit. I was an MK player, sometimes a Street Fighter player.

I don't know how they did it, but they managed to make a game that I loved, and right now is the main reason I'd buy an XBone (if I bought one tomorrow). First game of all the new generation stuff where I have a little bit of envy.

  • As surprised as anyone a damn FREE TO PLAY ANDROID GAME is this high on the list, but it most definitely is.

This game was in beta for a long time and was just released in full earlier in December. I just got into it a week ago...and I am terrifed I will be obsessed with this game in the same way you hear about WoW players being addicted.

The first "augmented reality" game that has ever got my attention, and it's incredible to experience if you allow yourself to be immersed in it. Everything from the well-integrated social aspect, to the game actually encouraging exercise...this is not like anything I've ever "played" before. Look it up if you've never heard of it. If it takes off the way I think it may, you'll be hearing about it soon. Comes out on Apple stuff next year which will be another big boost in player count.

  • I do kind of straddle the line between "this is stupid pandering" and "HAHAHA" like a lot of people do with this game, but in the end, you could tell the developer had a lot of fun putting this together. I like to play stuff like that.

  • I liked the first Bioshock but found it to be a bit over-praised. I went into this one with appropriate expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

  • I want a new Mortal Kombat game badly. This wasn't that. It actually wasn't really that close, either. But it was fun enough for a while. Enough to make this list, at least.

  • I didn't play all the way through this. Want to give it another chance. I really hated the camera but I'm interested enough in to see how crazy stuff gets to go back to it again eventually.

  • What was it I said about the fine line between pandering and clever? This game does a good job of staying on the right side of that.

  • No, I'm not kidding. The Android version. I don't know how or why the fucking Android version is better than the version that was on XBLA and PSN a few years ago, but it is. The control somehow isn't terrible, and more importantly they got all the original music that the XBLA/PSN release did not have.

  • I laughed a few times? I think?
