Ranking of Evil

The Wife and I have been playing every canonical resident Evil in chronological order and this a ranking of how much we have enjoyed each of them. We played the original RE2 and after all these years it hasn't aged exceptionally well, causing me to hand off the controller to my wife and hold our son saying "Resident Evil 2, Less fun than holding a baby". I have come around on it since then but we decided to play the remake instead for our list. We haven't played the RE3 remake, RE6 or 7 yet but plan to. We'll also probably play 8 at some point.

List items

  • This game was such a wonderful surprise. One of the few games I have made the time to replay since becoming a father and one of my favourites from the last few years.

  • This game was a revolution in shooters and Leon is easy on the eyes. Full of action and that RE cheese you know and love. Chainsaws, Zombies, fishing, Mechas, beautiful castles, This is one Resident Evil game that really has it all. "HELP ME LEON!" x100

  • Another apparently polar title that I seemed to enjoy but others didn't. Loads of running around like in RE:CODE:V but a far more enjoyable. Nemesis bring the tension and haunts you well. Bonus points for a hidden DMC12. STARRRSS!

  • The classic game that I loved originally, remade slightly with all of the good cheese still dripping off it. Try the sandwiches.

  • A rail shooter with some cheesy dialogue and an extra bit of character backstory. Co-op this can be a load of fun.

  • A rather surprisingly fun entry. I was forced to play through this multiple times because of the tough as nails end boss that soaks up every bullet you have through multiple scenes. All you need to know is "You're not Vincent"

  • A solid classic RE tale half set on a train where one of the main characters plays a piano but then refuses to do so in the next game.

  • Not a bad addition to the list but no real stand out moments either. After playing 12 other RE games though I was able to predict the "Good" ending beat for beat. One of the worst lines spoken in an RE game though.

  • Cheese and more cheese. The Dialogue in this game is pretty bad but the gameplay makes up for it. We also attempted to play it with one person walking and the other person using a GunCon which was interesting.

  • An interesting idea that felt a bit weird on a PS4. Not the first RE game involving a ship but the one most people might remember.

  • Co-op resident Evil that felt like a real slog. It's only saving grace was being able to dress up Chris like a cheap mad max clone.

  • Some people love this game and I was really looking forward to it only to be greeted with some serious back and forth action. Tedious and frankly a bit long in the tooth, A remake might fix it.

  • Thus far our least favourite in the series. Meant to be an online game, it was released in PAL territories as a single player only experience. It feels a bit jarring compared to other RE games. Sure it takes place just as everything goes to hell in raccoon city and really gives you that frantic sense of trying to survive but it is also full of bad trial and error gameplay.
