It really depends on the game and the reviewers experience in the genre and with the developer.

For example, I can play 10 hours of Uncharted 4 and know what I am getting until the credits roll. I know the developer, have played many similar games, I can smell the polish!

On the other hand, when I started Persona 5, I didn't really know the genre. I played 10 hours and was in love. By the time I hit the fifth dungeon and sixty hours, I was bored to be honest. The pacing of the game was all over the place and I put the game away.

That's not to say professional reviewers shouldn't make the effort if they have the time. It shows when they haven't put in the legwork!

Thanks to some helpful suggestions on the forums here, I am currently playing my first 4X game, Endless Legend.

I'm hooked ....I put 23 hours in since Friday, plus another minimum 10 hours online watching guides. The artwork and music are amazing! I have nothing to compare the gameplay to, but its is enjoyable to me. It was a bit overwhelming at first, so I popped the game on Easy for my first playthrough, just so I can get to grips with the many systems at play.

@undeadpool wow the art style for Darkest Dungeon is amazing! Reading the reviews though it looks tough as nails. Maybe one for the future.

It looks like the Total War series include some real time elements, which may be a problem with my cast, may avoid those for now.

I started Endless Legend and boy am I overwhelmed with information. I have literally never played a game like this. The tutorial is long and I had no hope with retaining everything. I found a good starter guide, and have jumped into a game. Looks like trial and error is the best way to learn!

Thanks again everyone for all the help...it made my day :)

Thanks for all the replies folks.

I have opted to give Endless Legend a try and am downloading from Steam now. I've got 6 months in the cast though, so I will certainly try some of the others mentioned!

Hi there

I found out last week I have a broken left wrist and it looks like I may have a cast on for the next six months. After feeling down the last few days, I have decided to make it a positive and try some games I have largely ignored and can play with my good hand...that being Strategy games.

My question is where would be a good jumping in point? I was thinking a 4X or a Total War game might work, but I want something quite simple to start with. Any thoughts?

I like space and fantasy themes if that helps :)
