Podcast - DF #48: Killzone 2 Does Not = Greatest FPS Ever

We're back for another week of utter awesomeness, mostly thanks to the "poo-mans" absence. That's right, this week you're stuck with only Rob and Kush whether you like it or not! We start off the show, like every other week, with "What We've Been Playing" and I get interrupted by the phone call that never dies. We talk about Wheelman, Ninja Blade, Peggle on XBLA, Crystal Defenders, Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Killzone 2 (yet again), and plenty more.

After "What We've Been Playing", we jump into a little gaming news including the Nintendo DS breaking 100M world-wide sales, as well as Bioshock 2 speculation. We then go into "The Sausage Dump", which is our new segment dedicated to all things not related to video games. This week's Sausage Dump revolves around our thoughts on the Watchmen film and how Rob is completely wrong and smoking too much crack. We end the show with the "Question of the Week" and discuss why film-to-game and game-to-film adaptations rarely work (and if that trend will ever stop). EDITED out retardedness.

Thanks for listening to our little podcast as always and be sure to check back next week for Gus' glorious return. Below is next week's all new Question of the Week from yours truly:

QotW (3/19/09): "What is more important in a video game: The gameplay, or the story? Can a game still survive if it has great gameplay, but not story (and vice-versa)?" ...I look forward to hearing the community's thoughts. :)

"Sausage Dump"? Ew...

Posted by Kush

What...I think "Sausage Dump" sounds delicious and vaguely nutritious. It was actually the name of an old weekly-OT post on Pixelated Sausage, but it died after one week! :P

Posted by LordAndrew

I guess I'm just picturing a sausage taking a dump or something. :P

Posted by Kush

I figured people would picture poo the next time they ate some sausage due to their similar shape and design, but you obviously have more of an imagination. I must also say that the Red X360 is very pretty :) ...and finally getting a copy of Breath of Fire IV is sooooo awesome!

Well I am glad Kush has come around to enjoying Killzone 2. ONE OF US, ONE OF US.

Posted by Kush

I will never be part of this "One of Us" business...never! I do enjoy seeing new type of areas though.

I want to play more Resident Evil 5, but when I sit down, I play Tales of the Abyss instead.

Whats the place to ask the question for the next podcast Kush.

As long as the game is made well and with great consideration, then it shouldn't matter.

Games that had great gameplay but almost no story:
Super Mario Bros.
Shadow of the Colossus
Crackdown

Games that had great story but almost no gameplay:
Most JRPGs
Metal Gear Solid games (I don't think they were great, but I can't beat out of the popular consensus)
Adventure games like Sam & Max, etc.

Games that have a good balance of both:
God of War franchise
Prince of Persia franchise
Half-Life 2
Dead Space
Vagrant Story

So when it comes down to it, neither is honestly more important.  It's about HOW those elements are used by the developers to make their game.  I'm one that still says today's idea of "games" is skewed.  They are becoming "interactive experiences", but it's easier to just call them games.  "Games" are Galaga, 1942, Space Invaders, Pitfall...

...it's not Gears of War, Halo, etc.

Regardless, that's what I've got to say.

Also, Kush...shouldn't this one be called "We Have An Absense of Poo" and not "Killzone 2 Does Not = Greatest FPS Ever"?  That was episode 47, fool!!!

@Gearhead: If you have a written questio to ask, you can just PM me on here, or email me at pixelatedsausage@gmail.com ...if you have an audio quesiton (or response) you can email that as well.

@jakob187: Actually, EP47 was called "Killzone 2 = Greatest FPS Ever" ...there is a slight difference, which is the point behind the similar names. I'm not quite as fond as Rob is towards KZ2.

I'm confused.

The site says EP48 is called "We Have An Absence of Poo" and EP47 is Killzone 2 Does Not = Greatest FPS Ever"...
...and this thread is labeled as being episode #48...

Nvm.  I'm just confusing the shit out of myself now.  Way to go, Kush!!!  I'M BLAMING YOU!!!

Just had a random thought right now...I think it would be awesome if you recorded a little "outro" for the podcast db90...something like "You've been listening to Distributed Failure, the podcast that fails at failing and thus somehow succeeds...tune in next week for more failure distributed equally in sausage-sized bits!" ...though my mind is kind of in the gutter right now...
