" @brukaoru:    I understand that, but just because something is finished doesn't mean it would make it to final cut anyway.     In the old days of console development there was no chance of making the secondary sale, as there was no venue to charge for it anyway.  Stuff like these heavy rain short stories likely would have never been thought of, and if it had they would have been added ONLY once the main game was polished and done.  There would have been no point in running this stuff through a costly QA process.  No one would have known about it, and it would have been canned either in internal QA(non-congruent storyline that is non essential and costly to debug and feature check), or even in brainstorming.  This handcuffed developers, your feature set and storyline has to be much tighter, once development is on track it is prohibitively costly to add in new ideas and thus non-essential stuff is scrapped early on.  Now they know there can be a new point of sale, and these ideas have more merit as DLC.     I'll again bring up Borderlands as a great example.  Zombie Island of Dr Ned is an item that could easily have been simply axed mid dev cycle.  They were behind schedule, it is completely non-essential, and has no tie in to the main storyline.  In earlier days, this content would not have been made or would have been saved for eventual sequel sets, expansions etc, or if VERY lucky, a free download on PC(although that was exceedingly rare).       A secondary thought as to these Heavy Rain stories is that yes, they'll be done on or about release date.  Developers don't have a lot of leeway in determining their release dates.  their schedule dictates what they can do.  Once a game goes gold and the master heads off to manufacturers so disks can be pressed, theres some time between then and release time, and nothing can be changed.  This is time devs can use to add DLC that is ready on release day etc.  I'm not sayng that's what happened here, but adding a few new things in the mean time and QAing them to be ready on release can add a great extra income source, and won't be ignored by devs. Stuff that has been story boarded/prototyped/begun development can see some extra time.     As to value added, I agree some of it will be "essential" for fans who want everything, but they have a completely playable game exactly the way it ships.  Its up to the consumer at that point to decide which if any DLC is of high enough value to purchase.  Be that new armor, a new quest chain, a new zone, a different story, whatever.  If it is a good value for the extra content, it will sell.  If it isn't enough value for the money, it won't sell.  Personally, i bought Zombie Island, but i havent bought the forza car pack.  I feel the borderlands stuff was more value than the new cars in forza, but that was my choice as a consumer, and I'm not bitter that I don't have the cars from the  forza DLC. "

There is a reason software publishers and devs love the idea of digital distribution - to kill the used game market and charge extra for content.

Overall, developers have been pretty good about what they choose to sell as DLC - Namco, Bioware and Ubisoft say hello, for starters.

Most everything I have seen is a value added type download.- Really? Because it's been all gouging.

If you pre-order Heavy Rain you get some free short stories, completely non essential to the primary game. - You are paying for story driven content in a story driven game that should be on the disc. You don't sell chapters of a book piecemeal and you don't sell chapters of a story in a game piecemeal either, unless you're looking to gouge customers.

It encourages extra development time dedicated to a game with content that otherwise may not be there AT ALL. - No, it encourages them to withhold content that would otherwise have been on the disc. It is bad for the consumer because you are getting an incomplete product.

It is flat out bad for consumers.

Well obviously you picked a fight as a desperate attempt for  attention over something that wasn't worth fighting over.

Glad you see reason and that you admit you were wrong.

" @ Kazona  No, I'm not making any excuses for them. Your thinly veiled criticism that they are lacking some sort of work ethic because they're not covering the game you want to hear about is ludicrous and ridiculously unfair.  Considering how many games are out right now, they have no obligation to cater to you just because you expect it.  Get over yourself. "
It's their job to have experienced all games that are in the debate to be called GOTY if they are going to call one GOTY.  Get over your trolling. "

Saying the guys at Giant Bomb have no work ethic because they haven't reviewed a particular game is trolling - on Kazona's part.

Defending the guys at Giant Bomb because they either have no interest or no time to review a game is not trolling.

If you are taking Kazona's position that the guys at GB have no work ethic, you are trolling, just like Kazona.

" why woul dlc be bad for consumers? "

From the PS Blog:

Hi everyone! I’m Jefferson Dong, the SCEA Marketing Manager for Heavy Rain, and I have some great news for those of you anxiously awaiting the release of Heavy Rain. Get ready to place your pre-orders for this PS3 exclusive title because we’ve got something special for you. When you pre-order your copy of Heavy Rain at participating retailers, you will receive the first episode of The Heavy Rain Chronicles (valued at $4.99 each episode) titled, “Heavy Rain: Chronicle One – The Taxidermist,” which will be available (only to those who pre-order) when Heavy Rain hits store shelves. The Heavy Rain pre-order program begins TODAY!

What exactly are The Heavy Rain Chronicles? Each Chronicle will offer unique, stand-alone, playable short stories featuring one of Heavy Rain’s main characters, and a storyline taking place either before or after Heavy Rain’s original narrative. Similar to Heavy Rain, each episode will offer a unique journey and different outcomes based on the players’ decisions and actions.

Heavy Rain: Chronicle One – The Taxidermist will feature investigative journalist Madison Paige in one of her first cases tracking down a serial killer. Most of you are familiar with this episode as it is an expansion and update to the original “Taxidermist” demo that received such positive response when shown last year.

For those who don’t pre-order Heavy Rain, the first two episodes of Heavy Rain Chronicles will be available for purchase and download through the Store after the release of Heavy Rain – the exact dates will be announced at a later date.

So apparently Quantic Dreams now think they're Activision. Fail.
Selling games in bits and pieces is exactly what's bad for consumers.

Just like saying "OMG UC2 IS TEH AMAZIN" or something similer its an essentially worthless statement without reasons, backup or similer. I dont wish to knock your opinion, especially since my experience with UC2 is limited to just the multiplayer beta, but rather than telling people to bugger off you could provide your reasons and turn it into a discussion rather than an argument. "
Oh I have given actual answers, people just refuse to listen.

" To be honest, I am kind of dissapointed with the GB crew for ignoring Dragon Age so blatantly. They have talked about it, but they with the exception of Vinny and Dave, none of them seem to have spent any actual time with it. They are going into an GOTY discussion without having played what I think is a pretty major game. I know they are just four dudes, but they are professionals, so I kind of expect them to at the very least play all the major releases, and not to ignore one simply because they can't be bothered to clear some time on their schedule.   I hate to say this, but since the launch of this website, this is the first time that I am actually dissapointed in their commitment to their work. "
1) People at GB are not *obligated* to play any game you want them to.
2) Not mentioning a game they may not have an interest in is not indicative of  their work or commitment to work.
3) Dragon Age is probably the *worst* offender this year when it comes to raping customers on DLC, with stuff that is blatantly cut out and held back to be sold later.
DA Origins should be nominated for worst game of the year.

There are plenty of good reasons to hate UC2. "
And yet, rather than construct anything resembling a well-thought argument, you choose to troll, repeatedly.  Go away. "
