Tip-toeing my way into the world of Anime...

I've always disliked anime. The way that animations were so choppy on purpose always annoyed me. I disliked how most characters in anime look identical except for their haircuts. I never enjoyed the over the top voice acting I'd seen on the few animes I'd looked at.

However, I'd realized I hadn't seen to many animes, so maybe the ones I had looked at were just garbage and not representative of the entire genre. I also was told that in general English dubs are terrible, and yea the voice acting was a huge thing that annoyed me before.

My friend suggested I watch Cowboy Bebop and I had downloaded it and had it sitting on my hard drive for months. Finally started it a couple weeks ago and wow I really really like it. The story, dialogue, and voice acting are all really good. It could pretty much not be an anime, all the stereotypical anime things that normally bother me are missing in this show or are toned down to the point where they don't bother me. I really enjoy the setting as well. Watching space bounty hunters is always cool. Show has a good sense of humor too.

I also watched the movie Spirited Away. I liked it, but at the same time it annoyed me because it had a lot of the typical anime things that bothered me. Thought the voice acting was decent, but annoying sometimes, especially the main character. As beautiful as the art style was in that movie, the animations were really choppy and it bothered me. I know that is supposedly the style of Anime, but just seems lazy to me to have such choppy animations. But overall, I liked the movie for its weirdness and cool visuals. It was targeted at younger audiences too, so I probably enjoy Cowboy Bebop much more since its for adults.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am taking note of them.

Don't take note of Boku no Pico. That's gay hentai. I'm not being sarcastic. That's what it is.

The wiki page posted above makes it sound like Paedophile gay hentai at that. Wow.

Ghost in the Shell is another movie that gets mentioned a lot, and it's ok but honestly Blade Runner does the same thing better ( It's also a TV show, dunno anything about it though).

The TV show is way better than the movie.

It feels like someone mixed a cop drama with metal gear solid.

Haha, Law and Order: Cyborg Crime Investigation. "Nah detective, I didn't see him come in to work that day, but he had been talking a lot about nanomachines."

I heard that Nichijou was weird a hell.

Weird as hell and FANTASTIC. I highly recommend it. It has a few jokes that just plain won't be understood unless you are fluent in Japanese and the culture (some go over my head too), many of the jokes are just visually funny and animation is really well done too.

@lazyhoboguy: I'm kind of a anime watcher, maybe every year or 2 something will be recommended to me and I'd watch it. There is the common misconception that the animations are lazy, the stories stupid, the characters flat, and that the dubs are awful. But most anime I've watched (which isn't a whole lot) is usually pretty good.

Some animes take themselves seriously and it works; sometime insanity and being over the top is great. The whole stiff animation thing I think was more a thing of the 80's and 90's. Usually if animation is stiff it's in an anime that has like 500 episodes and then there are bumps in quality when the action picks up. I'm also currently watching Bebop for the first time along with Samurai Champloo both are pretty good.

Death Note is an anime I adore for taking itself seriously, along with parts of Code Geass which are simular to death notes in ways but also a bit more lighthearted (sometimes.) Neon Genesis Evangelion I also really like but it's not for everyone. Some come away saying it's the best anime, some come away saying it's annoying and crap. I'd say it's a pretty important anime, so it's worth a shot.

As for more things that are made to entertain you FLCL is probably my favorite, Gurren Lagann is pretty good, so is Trigun.

My rule is if an anime is around 30 episodes whats the harm in watching it?

As for something like DBZ, Naruto, One Piece, or Bleach, they are just so long that the really awesome parts are spread apart with stuff you might not find that interesting.

This is WAY underselling it. There is one fantastic episode that does deal with the issues of human augmentation and the criminal justice system though. "Night Cruise" is also a fantastic episode that has little to deal with post-war alienation of veterans. Powerful and frankly scary stuff.

Basically, the show centers around a paramilitary organization called Section 9. They're dubbed a "search and rescue" organization to the Japanese public, but in fact they operate outside the law as basically a deniable asset of the Japanese government. They're specialized in cyber-warfare and counter terrorism tactics and have some of the best prosthetic body users in the world. Which are basically badass cyborgs with extraordinary and superhuman abilities.

Season 2 basically starts with a terrorist takeover of a Chinese embassy. Worst case scenario shit.

The show is also damn smart and actually raises serious questions on the nature of human identity in world where the line between man and machine has become completely blurred. Is it our flesh and blood that makes us human that give us a soul, or our personalities and life experiences? If you've traded your human parts for machine...can you even be considered "human" anymore?

Check it out. The Major is possibly the most badass female protagonists ever created. Bold, beautiful, intelligent and downright lethal. The movies do get bogged down by the philosophy, but Stand Alone Complex is mandatory viewing. If there's one show you watch based on information gleamed from this topic, this should be it.

This show might have dragged Cyberpunk kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Yeah, I'm a fanboy but it's brilliant. If you're a fan of The Matrix (the directors cited it as a major influence) or ANY of the Deus Ex games, you need to check it out.

(I also have a serious nerd crush on the Major. Don't judge me.)

If you want a fantastic anime animated film, Paprika is also amazing and just a joy to look at.

(FANBOY MODE ACTIVATED!)

Anything Satoshi Kon made is well worth your time. I don't like to throw around the term "genius" lightly, but the late great Satoshi Kon fits the bill. The product he produced was some of the most mind-bending, but brilliant material since David Lynch tricked Hollywood into green lighting Twin Peaks. I do not make that comparison lightly. Paranoia Agent is also fantastic. We really lost one of the greats when he passed.

*sigh* Now I'm seriously bummed out.......

Darker Than Black is also cool and on Netflix still. I think.

Akira is a good entry point into anime, I'd say. Depending on how much you like mecha, I'd also recommend Patlabor 1 and 2. Ghost in the Shell is also a good one.

Akira (the film) makes absolutely no goddamn sense. Regardless, it was seriously ahead of it's time visually when released and still awesome to watch now.

If you want to see some serious fucking destruction, Akira's not a bad choice.

Plot spoilers are minimal, but just fucking look at that. Not bad for an animated feature released in 1988 right?
