Gianbomb, just another extension of Internet culture?

The more I lurk /b/ and the more I listen to the bombcast the more I see inside jokes and memes being used during the cast.

This got me thinking; how many of these internet forums and message boards begin to blend together?
Is Giantbomb just another internet menagerie of memes, or is there some kind inner Giantbomb culture?
As rather new member to community (I joined back tis summer but didn't start lurking around until a few days ago) I am curious what you the Giantbomb users believe.

We use other people's memes, but we also have a lot of our own.  "That's million bucks!" is an example I can think of off the top of my head. And we reference a lot of things that happen during the Bombcast or ERs and whatnot.

Yo, about this topic, can we settle this once and for all?

Who created Bitches and Whores first?

Was it Vinny during the Endurance Run or was it /v/?  I swear to god they came out so close to each other the real origin of that meme is lost.

KnowYourMeme lists it as an /a/ meme from a photoshopped hentai, but who knows with that site. I'd say it came from /v/ or /a/ before here though.

What is the empirical definition of culture?  How do you define the ownership of a piece of culture?

I do know one thing.  People that get hung up about their personal stake in any particular piece of the internet culture pie are invariably bad people.  You can't like own a meme, dude.

That is to say, no one really invented this shit.  Culture is a snowball rolling down a hill.

Yeah, I see/hear  some giantbomb memes in the recent Bombcasts like Ice-T or the foreign press guy at E3, "Tell me about sie multi-player" or Jeff Bridges

I agree you can't own a meme or a culture on the internet, however what I'm asking is how the community views Giantbomb as a part of internet or culture in general.

Yeah, it came from there first, but I don't know if Vinny was aware of that when he said it or he just happened to make up the same thing. I think it was the latter.

You'll see people using the odd internet meme now and then on Giant Bomb but if we're defining "internet culture" as the culture that surrounds websites like 4chan, ED, and Something Awful then no, Giant Bomb is certainly not an extension of internet culture. I've been here since day one though and I can tell you Giant Bomb has a very rich collection of it's own memes and inside jokes.

I'll just support the "we have our own culture" thing. For example, nowhere else will you hear people saying, "Stop posting that chicken thing, it's not funny anymore." :P

Sometimes I'm really surprised at how well-versed the staff is with the internet.

Especially when Jeff starts talking about rars with passwords and skidrow.

Really? They run an internet website about videogames and have been with it pretty much from the beginning...

That's like saying you're surprised a car mechanic isn't mystified by electronic doors...

@LongMasterWolf: Clearly you're a newfag not just to 4chan but the internet in general...judging by your avatar and your topic. What are you in your teens? Don't worry I'll break it down for you.

Everything on the internet is connected to everything, forums, the news, you name it it's all on the net and it's all connected. And 4chan contributes a lot to everything since it's well known and the boards divide itself into specific topics. 4chan is more or less on the forefront more often than not (not so much these last couple years) when it comes to memes and fads, and forums usually adapt to the memes as they're introduced and add their own stuff to it if the community is strong and original enough.

Giantbomb is indeed one of those,  Neogaf as an example have their own things as well. Sites like gamefaqs/gamespot though don't and it's just a mishmash of fanboys.

Well I was mainly surprised by the piracy stuff because Giantbomb being a fairly console-centric website and they have all the income and publisher-connections to get pretty much any game they want. It seemed weird to me that they would even bother with piracy stuff, since a lot of game journalists have little to no clue.

Settle down bro, I was just curious about how Giantbomb's community views themselves, and the connections Giantbomb has to different community sites.

The full site launched July 21, 2008, but it existed as a blog since March and the Giant Bombcast started that same month. Numerous references are made to things that originated on GameSpot as well.

Giantbomb is a website on the internet. Many people go to this website and browse the internet regularly and interact with other people through forums and what not. Therefore it can be said that there is an internet "culture". Thus, Giantbomb, as a website on the internet, can be said to be part of the Internet culture.

Also technical definitions: of meme: an idea or element of social behaviour that is transmitted across through a culture, especially through repetition.
of culture: the behaviours, beliefs, development of a certain group of beings.

Not that they aren't able to, just that most of them don't care to. I would imagine that like most full-grown adults with reliable income, you stop pirating and start buying. Not to mention that a lot of them have to come home to finish games for reviews, so they don't have a lot of time on their hands.

The crew has been journalists for quite a while, some of them were at Gamespot since the mid-90s, before a lot of this .rar and bittorrent stuff.

I really think 4chan needs to end. I worked at a children's summer camp this past summer and i heard 13 year old kinds talking about it. From that day forward 4chan would be forever dead to me.

Everything and Everyone in the Internet passes through 4Chan at some point.  It's pretty much the lint filter for the world wide web.
