I suck at Starcraft! (Video proof)

I suck at Starcraft but I love watching it. I can’t enough of the current GSL on Gomtv and I’m constantly watching replays on YouTube. It’s a real shame that I don’t know what the hell I’m doing when it comes to multiplayer but I want to get better. So I’m going to start doing daily ladder matches and try my best to actually win. Oh and I decided to record some of my matches. I figure you can see high level Starcraft play everywhere and some of you would get a kick of just how bad I am...

Don't blow either, it's an overrated tactic and has been since day one. Once you've successfully stopped blowing and sucking, convection will bring you up to gold league and, from there, its APM's all the way to the top.

OMG HOTKEYS YOU'RE KILLING ME

Props for playing Zerg tho.

EDIT: Also, you have very good core understanding of theory and tactics, if you work on your mechanics like hotkeys, micro and multitasking I see no reason you shouldn't be in Platinum.  P.S. Drone more.

Jesus Christ in heaven use hot keys.

Also try to saturate your mineral patches and gas :)

2 per patch and 3 in each gas is optimal. GLHF!

It's a tough game to learn, you already have most of the basic fundamentals down. But as you said, build orders are important! The teamliquid forums have discussions all of the latest build orders, although with the constant shifting metagame it can be a bit overwhelming. Day9's dailies also provide very insightful info and tips aimed at all levels of skill. His "Newbie Tuesday" videos are especially well suited for newer players.

As a diamond level player myself that barely played the original Starcraft (nothing outside of the campaign and a few occasional skirmishes and lans with some friends), my advice would be to find a skilled player of your race (IdrA, Sen, FruitDealer, NesTea are some top level zerg players) and using a handy site such as sc2rep.com download a few of their replays against a variety of different races. While viewing these replays don't worry so much about micro, or all of the advanced tactics these players use, but stay more focused on their build orders. Whenever they put down a building, note the time on the game clock in addition to their current supply, again, this doesn't have to be perfect.

After you have a few barebones build orders, ones that you can rely on in almost any situation with a bit of variation, just start playing games. In these games focus a lot on your drone production. You always want to be making drones, and you never want to be supply capped, these are two of the key principals to having very strong macro play. Once you can master the constant production of drones and overlords without hindering the management of the rest of your units and resources, you can focus on keeping your money low. As zerg, it is a bit different because of the way the produce units, but throwing down an in-base hatchery isn't always a bad idea as a quick fix to drop your money quick.

I would go into more detail on some of these topics, but I'm a little strapped for time right now. Everyone has their own ways of learning but for me, watching replays and really paying attention to build orders, and the simple advice of always be making drones, always make sure you arent supply capped and always keep your resources as low as possible should be a few stepping stones to getting you to higher levels.

GOOD LUCK, HAVE BATMAN!

PS: You made a comment about being nervous while you were loading. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! This is a very real thing in the starcraft community, it's sortof cheekily known as "RTS Anxiety" but from what I've gathered tons of players, myself included, get extremely nervous when playing ladder games. I think it has something to do with points being on the line, and doing well actually matters if you're trying to move up the ranks in the ladder.

(I apologize for the many grammatical errors in this post, it's 10 AM, and I just pulled an all-nighter. I'm TIRED!)

Build more frikkin drones - zerg should drone every chance they get.
Spend your frikkin money - at no point in time should you have more than 400 minerals - spend it.

Zerg is hard, btw. If you can, try switching to T or P.

Thanks for the advice guys I'm inspired! It's funny after I lose a game I look at the replay and it's like I forget everything I learned. I know what I have to do but I don't do it. Nerves I guess... anyway more matches!

That was pretty entertaining well done.
Yeah even just getting hotkeys down would improve your game a huge amount. And more drones sir. Always be droning.

Always be droning would make a great ID. If it isn't taken already it should be!

It's alright man. Although, once I learned all about these crazy hotkeys that everyone keeps talking about, your game speeds up exponentially. It's insane.

Step 1: Practice your hotkeys! When you get them down you will quickly notice that you start playing way more efficient.

Also, try to macro (build units) while you are fighting - and generally when you are not looking at your own base. I know it's hard in the beginning. My best tip is just to continue playing. Don't get caught in the "spectator trap" that I have done so many times, where you just watch GSL and Day9 all day. At your level you really have to play just to get the basics down.

You are throwing down tumors to connect your expo to your main with creep. That's good! Try to hotkey your queens and inject larva as often as you. Then you can make more units!!!

And being nervous is something I think everyone is when playing SC2. Especially in the early stages!

Duders, I totally suck too.  I still love playing, though. What is a good way to record a replay and put it up on youtube?  If there was a tier lower than bronze, then I would probably be in that tier.

If anybody else out there totally sucks and wants to play someone who sucks more, then PM me and we'll exchange battlenet info.
