You need to play this with an arcade stick. Using Joy2Key you can map any controller or joystick to work with the game but I felt that the controller doesn't feel right. The speed and precision necessary for the game does not translate well to a d-pad and it is utterly impossible to use a control stick. The best possible way to play this game is with an arcade joystick. I highly recommend this game and at less then 5 dollars with the current sale there is no reason for anyone to skip it.

I ran into some issues setting up the stick due to Joy2Key only listing the button numbers so to help people out I have written out my instructions for what I found to be the best setup.

Controls

X - Y - RB - LB

A - B - RT - LT

A = Jump

B = Magic

X = Weapon Attack

Y = Range Weapon

RB = Bombs

LT= Menu

LB + RT are not used

JOY2KEY mapping

Before starting to map select the Others tab and check Use POV Switches

POV = arrows

1 = Arrow Up

2 = Space

3 = Z

4 = X

6 = C

9 = Escape

Wellp. Nintendo got screwed pretty hard. If there was a giant gap between release of the WiiU and other platforms I damn sure would have bought the WiiU version to play it eight months earlier.

@Liquidus: I agree that cage match is the most dedicated and professional way to handle this. The game rules setup with best of 3 and there is no rampage. We could easily setup winner and loser brackets. . . But don't you feel like this does need some sort of crazy with it? I think we should try to integrate another game type into it like a battle royal or Dethball. For this game I don't think a constant bracket tournament would be that satisfying.

How about randomly assigned teams and we do Dethball, Tag battle, or Tag deathmatch? The losing team battle each other within the team and the winner goes into losers bracket, like some sort of future Dethsport. It would allow for team play with better motivation for doing better. If you can't beat the other team you better be the best member on your team.

Once it's chipped down to 8* individual players then we move to bracket Cage match.

Or we start with cage match at 8* players and go down to a final 4 person battle royal.

As far as rules go for this tournament we have to keep battles to the smallest amount of players if it's a free for all. Big battle royal matches might be fun but not a good setting for the gameplay in a serious environment unless we go with teams. One of the problems with that is creating teams. Optimally there would be qualifiers and we would assign people to teams split between a user ran ranking level. The current ranking level in game is not accurate due to being able to level purely by spending time with the game. To my knowledge there are no PP or BP like system (Street Fighter 4) which we could divvy out teams. Once you get it down to say four players left in the tournament then you could do a battle royal or cage match brackets to determine placing.

A major problem for this game competitively is that unless you go one vs. one, you will run into problems and people complaining about being unfairly double teamed and what not. It is impossible for luck not to play a factor with the random events and situations that people will wander into which scores them for an opportunity kill.

With that being said; the prizes are nothing to write home about and that's how this game goes so I say fuck it and lets play Death Ball.

If anyone wants to setup some matches or get a group send me a PM. Also if you are running this and want to hear a more detailed explanation on how I would try to run it or to bounce ideas off each other send me a PM.

I was wondering which system to purchase this for. This tournament cemented it down.

One thing worth pointing out is that the System stops when the game is not running. It is not like tiny planes where things will take hours or even days to complete tasks. The timer only runs when you are playing so realistically you are waiting for a couple of minutes max. The longest I have waited is 8 minutes to learn a new skill for my character (you also control the middle manager as another character in game.) The game will give you it's premium currency for defeating major chapters which you purchase new champs with but you also receive a smaller amount for completing smaller tasks like delegating matches or building the office. It seems to be balanced so that you can use that currency to speed up the longer waits.

I have only been playing for about half an hour so I'm not sure if it picks up later in the game but overall it feels like it has been balanced so that you need to delegate certain missions out (CPU controlled) so you can manage your base. It does this in a way so you actually feel a crunch of time for playing efficiently unlike the NimbleBit games.

I have spent some time with the game and can say that the art style and concept work out very well but at the end of the day it falls down to the manage then wait free to play model that a lot of games follow. Other games have handled it better, i.e. NimbleBit with their Tiny Tower and Pocket Planes, but the fact that it is Published by the established and loved Double Fine goes along way for the enjoyment of the game.

It does have a coin copier (2 for 1 in game currency) in game purchase for $1.99 which I would advise purchasing early in game to show support if you like it.
