Death of Exclusives

So starting with the second to last E3 and leading up to now I have been increasingly frustrated with 'exclusive' promotions.

I understand that there are developers and business deals to think about which results in some games being released only on one console or before/after it's release on the other console (The timed exclusive).  Thing is I don't get angry because I can't play Some of the Metal Gear games or God of War 3 or Killzone games.  I don't get all puffy when Halo or Fable comes out just for the Xbox.  Fact is, I own a Blu-Ray player and bought the Xbox at the time because the price was right.  THe PS3 price was not.  I have enjoyed some things that I guess are 'exclusive' or 'better' on the 360, and I suppose have probably enjoyed some things that were 'worse' on the 360.

What really gets me is that "Fanboys" claim that these games coming out for one console or the other or mixed support levels for games between consoles have to do with anything other than developer preference and/or business deals.  In neither case do these have anything to do with console quantity.  Well, I suppose on some tertiary level they do, but I imagine it stays at that level.

Yeah so I'm a bit of a cynic.  But I've enjoyed game products.  Also I know PR wording of exclusives won't go away.  I just feel if the games community got together (sort-of Kum-ba-ya) and realized we all like games and aren't necessarily competing.  AND most importantly gave less fuel to the PR wording and more fuel to products being good, it might go away.  I feel gamers and journalists (and the intermixing) both are to blame.

My proposal is we not give weight to PR usage of exclusives.  Not even when games are really exclusive.  Sure, not all of us enjoy owning all consoles, so sometimes a new game won't peak our interest because we can't play it.  But if we do away with some of the Halo/Killzone arguments and just focus on playing good games (and promoting/buying them) maybe the annoying exclusive talk would go away.

That is all.

It's depressing to see some of the fanboys out there and the arguments they make but I hit a point where I just decided I wasn't going to pay attention to them anymore. There are a lot of idiots out there but listening to them isn't going to benefit us and talking to them isn't going to change their mind.

I pretty much agree, and maybe I'm just a bad person, but my view on exclusives has just devolved into just shrugging and hoping that one day either it'll come to the platform I own, or I'll get around to buying the platform it's on. I don't really want to say I don't care, but I kinda don't care. It's not like there's a shortage of games I like to play, so if I don't get to play a game or two, it's not a huge deal.

It's better to have exclusives and multiple console holders attempting to overcome one another than it is for all games to be released identically on all consoles.  Competition demands quality.  Without Sony, Microsoft has no reason to improve Live's feature set or make sure they have the best games made.  Without Microsoft, Sony has no need to work with developers to take advantage of the PS3's tech, or create singular experiences.

Games sell consoles, consoles don't sell games.

I believe in having more than one console to get the full experience. Fanboys believe in having one console and fighting for that console's supremacy to the death to justify sticking to that one console.

I'm actually tired of the word "exclusive". It's being thrown about everywhere. I'm just not sure what to say about it. The again, it's a good thing that different console companies are fighting for consumers. This will literally lead to the one console era not coming into place. Let me put it this way. If (that one big if) we end up having just one console, then that will lead to a monopoly. The company that does have one console will know that they are the only console, therefore they will overcharge for the console. They will overcharge for their games and services.

@Brodehouse:@ch13696:@Afroman269:  So just want to clarify, I don't think that there shouldn't be console competition (though I do think decent video game players should not just stick to their main gaming outlet).  I think I'm primarily upset with the overuse of exclusives and fanboy-ism.

By Overuse I mean primarily that it seems (to me) that at every level of Video Games (manufacturers/developers/press/players) there is an over-focus/over-promotion of exclusives:  That is if a game is an exclusive it gets more coverage/hype than another equally competent game.

My issue with Fanboy-ism is the same.

Also, I think console manufacturers will rise and fall over a given time period.  So there isn't really a logical reason to worry that if Microsoft or Sony put the other out of the console market that someone else would not make a competent console.  I also think that we forget that Nintendo used to be the console standard and just because the Wii seemed to go in a weird direction, that doesn't mean they can't bounce back in the next generation.

@ch13696:  Also, on a second reading I hadn't noticed what exactly you were saying.  I think you miss the notion that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have in this generation acted as if they had a monopoly at different points.  Remember when PS3 development was taking a while to spool up and Microsoft sales numbers were steadily out-pacing Sony's?  That was about when Sony seemed to suggest that their product wasn't comparable to Microsoft's.  In that same vein I feel that was why Sony kept the PS3 priced as it was.  Nintendo generally had a monopoly on the whole 'motion' gaming thing, and now Microsoft and Sony want a piece of the market.  I'm somewhat ho-hum on that, but then again if I were able to play wii style games on the Xbox that I own without spending more than I spend on a Wii, maybe I'd be up for it.

I think with or without exclusives you can make cases for each console manufacturer not to make a next generation model when that time comes.  Sony could look at it's price model vs sales volume of the PS3 and not move forward.  Microsoft could move into other markets and worry that a vista-like product would come out from them so they sit out the next cycle.  Nintendo could move additionally sideways making products people don't want to buy.  Or Nintendo could continue to sell Wii type systems like hot-cakes and Microsoft and Sony could follow suit (a negative in my view).  Any computer manufacturer could decide to enter a bid for consoles.

Arguably, the next time we get new consoles to play with there will be a Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo console to buy.  There will also probably be a series of new exclusives to play.  And there will probably be short and long-term weaknesses to each console (reliability, price to cost, software/hardware challenges, sales volume, marketing strategies).  And people will largely be loyal to their 'brand.'

When I look at this and think of my role as a consumer, and I project non-declining fortunes of my own over time, I hope i do the right thing and buy each console.
