A couple of years ago McDonalds bought Boston Market and sort of sabotaged it because they believed that people chose Boston Market rotisserie chicken meals over their new chicken sandwiches. It made zero sense with that and this situation with EA and Forza makes zero sense. A car manufacturer being in a racing game is not the deciding factor when choosing a game. Yes would I have loved to see, for example Ferrari, in Hot Pursuit? Yes, but them not being in the game didn't influence my choice in any way. Porche being in Forza or not won't be the deciding factor in whether you get Shift and/or Run. It will be the merits of the game.

I think that I was one of the few people who realized that min maxing the the character would lead to folly. I designed my character from the outset to be able to switch playing styles on the fly. The result was that by level 25 my character had maximized his sword skills and most of his magic skills. I actually had to turn the slider up cause the game got too easy for me. I forget the name of the sword but I had the flaming sword from that tournament of 10 races and my character learned to paralyze on touch. Combined with the fact that I had the maximum life detect spell and the ability to turn invisible no enemy stood a chance against him. For me I guess I just planned ahead better so Oblivion got easier as my level went up.

Does DRM really work? I've always believed that the people who pirate games never intended to purchase them. It seems to always be the case that DRM hurts the consumer.

Bitching about the price means "fuck, I can't believe I'm going to pay $340 for this." You don't bitch about something you don't care about.

So, is this a big deal? I'm inclined to say yes. I know the price is steep but honestly, how many NFL fans do you know who cannot subscribe to DirectV because of their location? How many subscribe only for Sunday Ticket? I bet that's a lot. You pay $250 for a machine that can play blu-rays and easily stream Netflix, Hulu, Vuduu, and any other programs that pop up later. That's your entertainment right there. If you're a MLB fan, like me, you can subscribe to that and now if you're an NFL fan you can subscribe to this. So you may only have to pay, lets say Comcast, $40 a month and you don't have to subscribe to Cable. I think this is a big. Much bigger than the traditional games press is giving credit to.

Oh and great work as usual Patrick. You don't write about the games you play often but when you do write about them it's usually very insightful stuff.

The games biggest strength is also it's biggest weakness. It's Japanese. No American dev could have handled a subject like this with the respect, frankness, truth, and maturity that Atlus showed. But, no American dev, if they had the balls and talent to get as far as Atlus did, would have gone as completely off the rails as Atlus did. The point Patrick was talking about was a great way to end it. Perfect. Then it went so far down a rabbit hole that it never needed to go down.

Great article. I think this is going to be one of those games you have to play to properly understand.

As far as I know Valve doesn't care whether the DLC you sell is exclusive or not. Usually it's not. Their policy just says that if you are selling DLC that it has to be on the Steam store itself. If you want to sell it in game that's fine, it just has to be on the store too. EA was just making their DLC available through an in-game store only and not putting it on Steam.
