GOTY 2017

So many games, and so many of them good; and yet a cadre of games which are really just "money making/loot box" schemes.

"...it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the [past] periods, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."

~ A Tale of Two Cities (1859) by Charles Dickens.

  • Very simply- the game I had the most fun with this year. My first Yakuza game and it won't be my last. A gem for mixing serious drama with zany comedy while never making either not fit with the other. A game that makes me hungry all the time!!!

  • Rough...psychologically and mechanically in parts. A masterclass in how to marry an atmospheric world with smart storytelling and sound design. Ninja Theory shows everyone else how it's done; they made a game, not a money making pyramid scheme. Other game developers if they open this game will scream like they are seeing the Arc of The Covenant - it's holy, pure light shames them.

  • A vibrant world rich with beautiful nature and filling it with ...people I enjoyed getting to know! All with a story that intrigued me to play.

  • Like meeting an old friend who you worried might have changed, but instantly you are back to best friends. Many game story writers could learn from how Life Is Strange writes Chloe's journey. Oh, my god do I loves these games. I praise that we live in a world where they can be made and be played; but more than that we live in a world where what they said 'can be spoken' and speak to the people who need them so much.

  • I delight in Persona's worlds, its monsters, its characters, and its story. By combining of the fantastical with the mundian school like of a teen makes something wonderful. Persona games are always good, but I'm not sure this one captured my mind like P4 did - still loved it.

  • Not as good as Black Flag, but it takes the series back in the right direction. The one thing this game has above all other AC games, is the setting; Egypt is a place I just enjoy exporing. In a year of Triple-A games screwing up, this game just did it closer to right....oh, Ubisoft.

  • A gamut of sober emotions emotions infused the gameplay. Incredibly beautiful on the screen with a absorbing story centered around several generations of an ill-fated family. Definitely deserves a recommendation for anyone who is willing to make the leap of faith.

  • Going back home - A theme not often seen from a truly mature or emotionally realistic point of view. An imperfect game, but a game that has moments few games even consider to illuminate. Also, I love cats, put a cat in it and I perk up.

  • Nintendo did something right, not just for itself, but for the industry by pushing what Zelda 'could be' forward.

  • I didn't play NieR; I admit that freely with great sadness. I simply did not have time to play it once let alone play it the amount of time it would have needed.
